Special restaurants which aren't too expensive

Recommended nice places for dinner

Looking for a nice restaurant. Kind that's good for couples, perhaps a small group. Food type doesn't matter, but somewhere special. Not special in "I've won the lottery and I'm inviting you all out to dinner somewhere expensive." Just that certain something that makes is better or nicer than your average restaurant. Central is best, but if you know something fantastic in Laim or further out, name it too please.

If you like Indian food, Rama is fantastic. I've only ever been to the one in Ismaning, but there's another on Arnulfstraße near Marsstraße. I think it's owned by the same people, so I'd imagine it's just as good.
Keydeck
I'd recommend Master's Home. I wouldn't call it break-the-bank expensive but it is a cut above other prices. Great for couples and small groups with the interesting factor being that there's no menu. A very enjoyable and different night out.
noddy
for my money: The Big Easy and cafe ruffini, both on ruffini strasse near rotkruezplatz...

there is also a rather chic looking placement opened up recently on brienner strasse in the basement of the Austrian embassy/consolate... haven't been in, but the menu and the piccies they have hanging at street level look good...

Well Showem ... I may have found the place you are looking for. The restaurant in question is called (appropriately in fact ... for your purpose) Liebighof. It is situated on Liebigstrasse, close to the Isar.

I will be sending a review to Bob about it shortly. I have been there a few times, and loved it every time. Menu is Austrio-german. They have amazing seasonal specialties (wonderful during spargelzeit for example).

Restaurant Liebighof
Liebigstr.14
80538 München
Tel:089 295405

Just north of Maximilianstrasse, in a very glitzy yet quiet part of town. Walking down the streets after dinner in that area is very nice ... contemplating glamorous flats.
Jimbo
McDonalds, Leopoldstrasse - top class burgers. Failing that Yum near Viktualienmarkt is brilliant (about 40 sponds a head if you don't go mad on the Baileys afterwards).
VDB
@Jimbo - I would myself prefer the burger king over the McDonalds, just a bit more taste and over all gastronomic quality.
bee_sting
Talamonti - check guide. Sit in the bistro at the high table where you can see the cook. also, order the "menu" (i think 20 euro a pop), and take what you get for the 3 courses. problem is, any wine will make it expensive...
interplanetjanet
Since you said "which aren't too expensive" I just want to re-emphasize my recommendation. It's your average restaurant price of about 30€ total for two people including a beer and a mango lassi each...and it's really tasty. Like I said, though, I haven't been to the one on Arnulfstraße, but I can't imagine it being too different if it's owned by the same people.
Showem
Hi all. Thanks for the responses so far. It can be a bit expensive, it's supposed to be special after all, but not a place where you spend money just to show you can.

Keep them coming!
Keydeck
Then if you've not tried Masters Home it's a special evening.

I'd also second Jimbo's suggestion of Yum Thai because it's damn fine!

As far as I'm concerned neither are over the top expensive by any means.
eurovol
Depending on your idea of special, there is a middle ages restaurant that is suppose to be pretty cool. Wifes workgroup went there and they had a blast. Maybe an idea for a future event as well.
Keydeck
Ooh yes indeed. It's just round the corner from Odeansplatz on the street linking to where d'Opera is. Have wanted to go there for ages. Probably not the kinda place she implied though. Still, you can't beat the old throwing the bones over your shoulder gig.
UrbanAngel
That restaurant which you're talking about is meant to be a typical medieval place i.e. everything is done in a traditional way ; the female customers who go have to serve their male companion , no knives and forks (rip the meat with your teeth!) etc

I heard also due to many courses that it can last between 2-3 hours for 1 meal.

Don't know the name (some kind of Keller?) nor the price range.
leeza
I didn't care for Master's Home much... It was an interesting idea, the no menu thing, but each 'course' was so tiny, that by the time we finished, we all headed over to Hard Rock for some 'real' food. We had a running joke that each course was 'essence of...' like 'essence of salmon' for the tiny sliver of salmon that was served. Also was 20 minutes or so between each course (maybe they were having a bad night) so we were sooo hungry by the end of the meal... Anyway, my two cents.
pootle
Was at the medieval place a couple of weeks ago, have the menu at work. will post more details later

l like the Reitschule on Koniginstr next the the Eng Gart
Always goos food and it's in a nice location - you can eat on the terrace if its good weather. Not too pricy.

Hi
Noddy is spot on, I was in the Big Easy last night and as always it was great.
For something a bit different try Broeding a tiny restaurant which only offers a limited (mostly set) menu but an extensive wein cellar. All Austrian food and wine and very, very special.

still love La Bouille
erdbeere
did anyone figure out what that midieval place is called?
powerfull
My suggestion: Drei Groschenkeller at Musem Lichtspiele. Great atmosphere- Each room decorated with props and furniture. Everytime I have gone I have been amazed at how inexpensive it is.
Keydeck
...and it's always fun watching women open bottles of Isar Plop in haste and then having to deal with the consequences biggrin.gif
Badger
@ Erdbeere: Feldherrnkeller.
However, I second the Yum Thai suggestion. It's really fantastic Thai food with all degrees of spiciness, it's a bit up-market but not inaffordable, and unlike most other Asian places it's done up in a really simple but lovely, non-kitschy way, candle-lit, really quite cosy. It's my most favourite restaurant in Muc. For special occasions.
Twinsie
Le Faubourg for a real treat (Kirchenstr. 6 near Max-Weber Platz) it's about 50? per person, thats inlcuding wine. A great, relaxing atmoshpere where you can feel special and eat like a king without the "trendy" munich crowd ohmy.gif).
randy
For couples or small groups, I think Blue Nile would be pretty good. Anytime you can play with food (eat it with your hands) - is pretty fun and intimate. Food was good, and not so expensive when I've been.

Follow it up with an hour or so in Bar Triana, a vastly underrated, relaxed, hip and cool wine/cocktail bar near to Eat the Rich (alternative to - or cojoined with, for a frisky followup).
oli2000
Wirtshaus in der Au. Great for couples and smaller groups. You'll need to reserve though.

From what I found on the net, there are two med-evil places. One is called Welsh something or other and the one that the wife went to is something else. The secretary at work has our menu from there and I am on vacation, so I will not be goin to work for the next three weeks!
You gotta love Germany's vacation time biggrin.gif

Ok some details.

The medieval banquet we went to last month was run by creative catering.

They have a website with details of the event here

Follow the menu Welser-Kuche - München

Had lots of fun, was a bit strange in places.

I even ended up as the tables beer wench for a while

Okay, a few comments, just from my own opinion:

Rama: Been to the one both in Ismaning and Munich. Liked both, but don't really find there's much atmosphere. Radha, just a block or two from Rama in town is nicer.

Master's Home: Been to the bar, okay. Restaurant looks good, but they are on holidays at the moment.

The Big Easy: Despite what everyone else has said about the place, I've had bad service 3 out of 4 times there. Not grumpy, just glacial in speed. Not my favourite.

Cafe Ruffini: Never went. Always looked full of see-and-be-seen people. But may give it a go next time I'm back in the neighbourhood.

Would like more details on the restaurant under the Austrian consulate. Maybe it's under Der Österreichische Handelsdelegierte on Promadeplatz?

Liebighof sounds great, we will give it a try.

I've heard lots of good things about YUM, I guess I'll have to try and get organised and make a reservation far enough in advance.

We went to Talamonti this week and enjoyed it. Liked the wine, liked the food, bustling atmosphere, perhaps just slightly uncomfortable in the high stools. I was fine, but my tall Greg wasn't as comfy. Price was okay, certainly not somewhere for a regular event, but worth it for a "special" night.

I went to the Medieval restaurant years and years ago. I highly recommend it for a fun night out, perhaps a TT event? But not somewhere to go for a couple.

I've been to the Reitschule once only, for breakfast. Next time I'm in the area, I'll swing by and see what it's like in the evening. Not too schicky?

Broeding. Yes, we always meant to go there when we were living in Neuhausen, but always ended up going to Edison's or the other little Austrian place farther down Schulstr. Must make effort again to go.

The 3 Jordigo mentioned, Buffet Kull, Red Lobster Sylt and Jean de St. Malo sound like the type of places we are looking for. Always wondered what the Lobster Sylt was like and we've developed a definite taste for French food and wine since our spring trip, so Jean de St. Malo should also be on the future list.

I went to La Bouille when it was Spago and felt like my money wasn't good enough there. Maybe it's better now, probably worth a go, since it's in the neighbourhood.

Drei Gröschenkeller is nifty for how it's decorated, but I've been there so often as a pre or post movie drink locale that it's not really "special". And they charge for tap water! mad.gif Only 30 cents or so, but it's the principle.

Le Faubourg also sounds good! Ack, so many great places to try!

Blue Nile has always struck me as a place the curry crowd go when they want something different, but that isn't the first good review of the place I've heard, so probably worth a try. A small group will probably be the test group.

Wirtshaus in der Au falls into the same category as 3 Gröschen as it's often been used pre post movie place. Good jazz brunch in the winter and all the service wear either dirndls or lederhosen. Nice! But not really a couple place if you ask me.

Anyways, just my opinion on what's been shared so far. If the medieval banquet is organised sometime after Oktoberfest, I'd be well in!

Just a heads up on this restaraunt, as this is a favorite date night spot ours. The atmosphere is certainly not glam, but cozy. This is not a place where one sees tourists. They also do not seemingly care to speak English or any other foreign language. So make sure you can order in German. I have also never seen any "roudy" behavior in there. In fact I think the female manager can and would kick some ass if anything bothered her...she runs a tight ship in there.

Aside from that it is a restaurant with excellent traditional German food. Friendly, cozy, warm and you can actually have a conversation.

@Gemini
I like Liebighofs as well (I live right around the corner). It is very reasonable priced with a rotating menu. But, I have to say that everytime that I went there, there was at least one table with English speakers. It does look non-touristy, but I think that many do end up there. But a great price and great food.

augustiner on landsbergerstr . best duck in town and prices are o.k

This was going to be my suggestion too!
I went with Topsy a few weeks ago and we had a great meal.
Also Degustini is a great little Itallian not too expensive and great because you just eat whathever the chef cooks so no having to decide off the menu.
gemini
@ Brokenm - yes, it is probably me and mine you hear speaking English there. smile.gif I certainly didn't want to imply there are no English speakers there, I too hear them from time to time and have met a few, but they have all ended up being expats, and not tourists. If you speak German, there is no problem.

Only once I saw tourists there and it was kinda painful to watch. Said tourists spoke not a word of German, and the staff did nothing to try and get past the barrier. You got the feeling that the rather like keeping it non-touristy.

Fair enough, another favorite Bayerisch restaurant of mine is called the Dicker Mann. Great place, great food, great price.

Red Lobster Sylt is gone as of August 2005 and in its place is Samara Oriental, an Egyptian restaurant. Good service, nicely decorated. Has a comfortable lounge downstairs.

did anyone figure out what that midieval place is called?

It's the Welser Küche in the Feldherrenkeller. Never tried it myself (boring co-workers) but it seems like value for money.

The Benjarong in Falkenbergstrasse (across from the Vier Jahreszeiten) is excellent and has cheap noon offers.

3 more on the middle - higher end...

Il Mulino (classic Italian)
Vapiano (new, good atmosphere, busy, pay card system)
Alter Hof (quiet, best service I've had in a german restaurant, hidden, great wine, not too expensive)
