Getting paid for work in Germany

Do I need a German bank account?

I have just arrived in Berlin and am currently looking for work...just wondered how we get paid here?
Is it in cash, cheque, or do I need a German bank account?
Also, do I need a tax number or anything like that?
Thanks!

Can you buy beer in Germany? wink.gif

To work legally you need a tax number.
Register your address with the local authority. Get a residence permit if you are a non EU Citizen. Get a tax number.
That all happens at the local authority.

Get your first emloyer to get you a social security number.

Unless you are working cash in hand (of course that NEVER happens in Germany with young immigrants in the first jobs wink.gif ) you will need a bank account.
There are varĂous commercial and public banks out there who you could give your business to; each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Yes you will need a German bank account. To get one of these you will need an address and to be registered at the Meldestelle. Here you will also get a Lohnsteuerkarte which you will need to give to your employer (he/she will ask you for this anyway). You hand this into him and then everything is done automatically.

Also depending on your naitonality you will need a residence and/or work permit.
