After their ignominious performance at the World Cup in 2006 and the embarassing loss of The Ashes against Australia England has once again failed at one of their most prestigious home-grown sports. Germany beat Belgium 10:7 in the
European Championship held last week in Ghent after winning the semi-finals against - England (10:8).
I would really like to quote an English language source but the English media seems not to consider this event newsworthy.

I assume England's team consisted of 4 pissed up lads chosen at random from a boozer...
I hardly think you can compare this to the ashes or losing your own cup (America's Cup) or being beaten at basketball or baseball by other countries when you are undoubtedly the world leader in those sports...

The US has the sense to keep the baseball "World" Series to itself. I do wish I could tell you who was on the England team but the information is, as mentioned, sparse.

Are you sure its the Malta Cup by the way? - I thought that was a 'proper' snooker tourny for individuals

Yeah, when a Kraut wins (or in fact gets to the televised stage of) a snooker ranking event, then that would be news...
Women and sport!! I tell ya!!

The ranking event in Malta was about 8 weeks ago I think.

I think it must be the European Team Champs or something

The idea that Germany is better than England/Britain at snooker is patently ridiculous.

It appears to be an
EBSA thing but can't find anything to do with this year's event.

Sheesh, face is well red now. In looking for the background stories I confused Malta Cup with European Championship in Ghent, and I beg everybody's humble pardon. I will self-edit. And if the Blue Jays want to play in the American League, bless their hearts, let them.
EDIT: Thanks for the confirmation, bd.

Well here was the all-star England team that competed in the 2007 EBSA European Team Championship (held in Gent apparently) Mike King, Greg Batten and Andy Symons-Rowe. As far as I can tell they are not professional and are not listed in the
official ranking list for 2006/2007 so it probably was 3 pissed blokes from the pub.
For a list of all competitors (although I very much doubt anyone will recognise a single name from the list)

Not really similar to the humiliation suffered by Allen Iversen etc on the basketball court then
So it seems Germany wants to become a great snooker nation. Lasse Münstermann, "star" of German snooker, even managed to beat six times word champion Steve Davis (wasn't an entirely serious game though, rather a promotion thing; cf. linked article (in German)). Who knows - as penalty shootouts against England have become a bit boring

, maybe the next step would be a German victory in The Crucible Theatre. But seems to be a bloody long way there, so I don't think there is any need to worry until about 2036

Last night I just couldn't make up my mind wether to go for the pink or the brown - I guess that's the only similarity it has with snooker.
