Don't forget to look out for the lunar eclipse tomorrow night, weather permitting. Here are the approximate times for Germany of the major phases of the eclipse:
Penumbral Eclipse Begins: 21:18
Partial Eclipse Begins: 22:30
Total Eclipse Begins: 23:43
Greatest Eclipse: 00:20
Total Eclipse Ends: 00:58
Partial Eclipse Ends: 02:11
Penumbral Eclipse Ends: 03:23
Some more info (in German, but of course specifically relevant to observing from Germany)
here. Also lots of good info
in FuzzyTony's link.

From what I remember, lunar eclipses happen 2 weeks before or after a solar eclipse. Anyone know where the solar eclipse will be?
EDIT: I found it, nevermind. A partial solar eclipse in Asia on March 19.

Saturday night date with lunar eclipse Thu Mar 1, 7:21 AM ET
PARIS (AFP) - The Moon will turn a shade of copper red this Saturday when it will be fully eclipsed by the Earth, whose shadow will blot out all but a tiny bit of refracted solar light.
Star gazers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa will have a front-and-center view of the eclipse in a late-night sky, with the zenith occurring at 23:21 GMT.

Now that the weather seems to have cleared up, it seems worth mentioning that there will be a total lunar eclipse tonight, with Germany in prime viewing area. If the weather is good, it should be the best one in years (says major news outlets).
You can read more about it here:
BBC News:
Lunar eclipse wows sky watchersThe eclipse will start at 21.18, and totality will begin at 23.44.

Can anyone explai the difference between "totality visible" and "fully visible"?
Astronomer
Mar 3 2007, 5:12 pm
It just means how good the eclipse will be from different points on Earth. In the "totality visible" regions, people will be able to see totality (when the moon is completely gone), but not the entire eclipse (moon disappearing then reappearing). In the partial visible regions, only part of the eclipse will be visible before the Earth rises/sets.
cool, was a write up in the AZ today too, so I hope the skies stay clear to see it.

Real clear sky’s in the UK tonight, too much light pollution for me to get a photo, but I’m def going have a good view

TBH the moon looks really creepy at the moment. Kinda makes you understand why people thousands of years ago attributed mystical powers to it and stuff.
Will try get some photos but I think the street lightings gonna screw it up

Some years ago I was driving home late from the office & the moon was visible in front of me with a chunk removed.
There was this guy on the local radio (this was NDR) "and tonight there is an eclipse of the
moon and you can see it well because its also a full moon"

) but maybe it'll clear up before 23:00. I hope so. That would be pretty awesome to see.

Good luck then. Haha... I think you'd need a lot of zoom, and a tripod to get any decent photos (and extended shutter time). But then, I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Here is my view...I hope it clears...Kinda a cool ring around it though. The wind is shaking my tripod though

cover the flash too.

Cut the bottom out of a plastic flower pot or similar and tape it over the lens of the camera, to exclude as much ambient light as possible, set for long exposures and get a tripod.

If you set it to infinity the flash
should be disabled- at least is on mine.

If he doesn't have one yet, it might be a bit hard to get one this late on a Saturday night.

I have no tripod either.

Maybe I'll try taking pictures later, but very likely they will not come out any good.

I am not asking for you! I am asking for me! I have plastic cups, but no paper cups and no flower pot either.
perdido
Mar 3 2007, 8:50 pm
yep and plastic would probably be better especially if a dark color. I also recommend shooting a few exposed without a tripod. Focused sharp pictures are often not the best shots. Some of my favorite peices are shots I took with out focusing and blurred. Play baby play!

Mar 3 2007, 8:53 pm
Oh, freakin' great. I just checked my plastic cups, and they're transparent.

I'm sure they'd make a huuuge difference...
Now if I had a sharpie I'd paint it, but of course I do not own a sharpie.

Fairly clear here I think. Gonna head out in about 20 mins with tripod and beer. I can turn off flash and set exposure for a long time. It's just a point & click but has some manual settings so will see what it can do.
Will be up top of the Oly-berg so the light pollution should not be too bad.
So other than tripod, low light pollution, high zoom, no flash and long exposure, any more tips?
