Well I certainly missed last night's Curry Night. I just hope it was not a big conspiracy to fake a
curry night by the same people that faked the moon landing.

@ 3 Lions: where are you going for the pre-drinks thing?
3 Lions
Aug 9 2004, 6:15 pm
When the
curry night is at Sitar, there is a bar just round the corner called 'Gewurzmulle' so I plan to be in there around 8pm.
In fact on the map above, you can see the street 'Gewurz' - its just there.
Graham
Aug 9 2004, 6:21 pm
the last time I was at the Sitar I kept an eye open for the Gewurzmühler. It was shut and boarded up. Has it moved?
Malcolm Spudbury
Aug 9 2004, 6:30 pm
It was still open last time I was there. Mind you, that was a few weeks back so if you've been there recently...
BTW, the map above is slightly wrong. The restaurant is at the corner of Tattenbachstr - not Sternstr as indicated by the red circle. If you come out of the U-Bahn next to Roosevelt's bar you're on the right street.
Actually if Gewürzmühle is closed, Roosevelt's might be an alternative for your pre-curry drinks. However, be aware that they don't serve Helles - only Pils. Not sure if they even have Weißbier.
Heya theres a group getting together before the Curry to exercise our German
We'll be at Roosevelts at 7.30pm, if we're lucky, "real" Germans or at least really good posers will come along and talk with us. I could take a page out of South Park recruiting manual and say that punch and pie will be served but that would be a bold face lie. Anyway, it'll be good times...dynomite...really. If you wanna come along, details are posted
here.Though ps: I don't know jack all about the bar, other than theres usually rich, hot, chicks sitting around in tight clothing looking to score english speaking expats. Okay, thats a lie too - except the part about not knowing the bar - but its better lie than lame ass punch and pie, unless its a good pie. Aaagh nevermind.

Aug 10 2004, 5:51 am
I went to Roosevelt's once and they looked at me askance when I asked for a beer. As Malcolm says, it's Pils or cocktails.
well I'm coming to Curry Night even though the registration form is all full up. Just try to stop me.

Looks like being a long day at work so the colorolally is that I shall most likely also be mixing my Ls and Rs at the Gewurzmühle from 8 at the latest.
@Gen Looks like 2 people have 'unreserved' so if you get in quick you can even turn up legally

Aug 12 2004, 9:50 am
Well the
Sitar was good last night, there was about 23 people when I counted at one stage. I found that my Curry was a bit on the cold side when it was served, and their service wasn't the best, one or two people at the table got served 10 minutes after everyone else (and I don't think it was the fact that they came late), plus the nan's (food not grannies) came out a little bit late.
That being said the meal tasted lovely , well worth a visit, plus they had Augistiner so you can't go wrong there.

To be honest, when people(who arrive on time) order at 915pm, and then all the late people turn up at 930pm (from the german evening), and still all the food arrives roughly together, then I dont think the sitar can be criticsed.
I have yet to find a resturant that can cope very well with a group of 20 poeple!
Excellent food, excellent beer and a lovely atmosphere outside last night

I have only had indian food once before (interesting side-note, I learned that when one - at least in the UK - refers to Curry one means not the particular spice mixture but Indian Cuisine generally), but I must say that last night was excellent.
There was some wait for the food, but good conversation and a smattering of Helles bridged the gap nicely. Our host was also very nice and took the time to ask my opinion of the food. Answer: Deelish.
Overall: It had a good beat that I could really dance to. I give it a 9.
ps - the german stammtisch was also great. all levels, all participating, all in german.
Malcolm Spudbury
Aug 12 2004, 12:33 pm
Agree with pootle about the service. They did well to deliver food to pretty much everyone at the same time, even the latecomers who ordered half an hour after. It did kind of defeat the purpose of us ordering early though...
Oh, and just to confirm: Gewürzmühle is closed. Not sure if it's permanent or not. All the windows had blinds drawn, not "boarded up" as was mentioned before.
Pootle, Jeeves and I ended up going to Tattenbach, diagonally opposite Sitar, instead.

Aug 12 2004, 12:37 pm
Went to Tattenbach as well, looks good in there.
Food last night, excellent as always. Have to say the staff were extra nice to evryone last night. Wouldnt be because the location has shifted the last couple of weeks would it? Doubtful, but they know us now and I guess they dont want to lose out business.
JoolyBooly
Aug 12 2004, 12:39 pm
what was Tattenbach like? Looked nice from outside.
Yep, great night, great curry, weird but good Peshwari Naan and nice cold beer, although my head isn't too happy today after that mix and 6 hours' sleep...
cycling home was entertaining though, missed the road and ended up in a building site... ;o)
Malcolm Spudbury
Aug 12 2004, 12:43 pm
@3 lions, oops sorry, forgot you were there too...
Tattenbach was OK. We were the only ones inside though - no seats left outside by the time we got there. Beer was Augustiner at around 2.90 euros for 0.5. Didn't get much of a look at the food menu.
As for the food at Sitar: the previous couple of times I was there the food wasn't so good. The last time I'm sure I got leftovers with a bit of extra sauce and chilis thrown on top. One of the reasons I was keen to try other places the last few weeks.
Last night's meal was a definite improvement.
Jeeves
Aug 12 2004, 1:53 pm
Service was fine to me even if I ordered first and received last. Can't complain about that, nor that they didn't seem to want to give me a bill at the end. They were very good about letting us sit outside making quite a racket until half twelve altho they only have a licence until 11.
There might be something in their attitude having improved slightly by the group not going there a couple of times. As Pootle and I walked straight past without stopping at about 8 the one waiter looked distinctly panicky, maybe thinking we'd be going somewhere else after all.
Vindaloo was okay, a little thick and not sour enough for me but that's just taste. Certainly not spicy enough, I should maybe have asked for extra hot like AquaMarine, oops sorry, AquaticMeringue. Enjoyed it all the same.

Something like, get out at the top of the U-bahn coming from
Hauptbahnhof and take the first street on your left...

Aug 12 2004, 2:19 pm
@pablo, if you turned left then that explains why you spent 40 minutes walking. in general though it does sound like a good idea - telling people how to get there and all. great for those who can't read maps.

Pictures from the German Stammtisch and the Curry Night are now posted in the

Check the map in Malcolm's post. The restaurant is 50 yards (or maybe even metres) from
Lehel U-Bahn station. And anyone should be able to point you in that direction if necessary.

I figured it out, belatedly...Curry in the U.K. is what Soulfood is in the U.S.
politically correct discussions aside - as to the reasons why we are so attached to it, ...the next best thang to Soulfood is of course Mexican Food.
Which is why we suffer so much when staff behind the counter at the Cinema ask us Mexican Food connoiseurs cum movie buffs,
Do you want Nachos *with cheese* or without cheese?
You look dumbfoundedly and manage to mumble err, I like my chips ...with cheese. And get as an answer,
Oh you mean NACHOS with cheese!!!
At this point you just nodd frantically and hiss, Sure sure, allright, Nachos with cheese, thank you.

No way...not in California. No doubt, "soul food" is scrumptious native food, but Mexican food is definitely to California (and other Mexico-bordering states) as Indian food is to the UK. Thing is, in the UK there's no yummy native food analogous to "soul food" (I actually had to look up that term as I've never heard it before).

Agreed.
In California it is the Mexican food.
Your basic rice and bean taco, guacamole, salsa, chips, sour cream, no lard, nachos... oh man you just don't get it that way in Munich...
