I'll be able to get there for an early drink as well.
What time? 6ish?

May 17 2005, 4:23 pm
FFS people! why don't we just start the whole damned thing at 6pm?
Seriously, I have spoken to Ram (the owner) and he FORBIDS ANYONE FROM ARRIVING BEFORE 7.30pm!

Early drinkies don't have to be at the restaurant.

I may come early, but I'll have to decide tomorrow. It depends on whether or not I need to get into town early to drop my laptop off at the laptop doctor before closing time.

what do you mean he "forbids" it?
what time does the restaurant open?

May 17 2005, 4:32 pm
Ok, the restaurant has been warned about the impending doom.
I have reserved the entire big hall up front.
I mentioned that some people may come bit early starting from 6:00 and I was told it is not a problem.
I am not sure how early I can come because madame roots is comin along.

36 people?! I'm going to have to do some soul-searching and decide whether or not I'm going to go. With that number of people, it'll take ages to get fed. I hate to be contrary but is there any interest in adding a second location? Samrat is also in that neighborhood. (waits for Grinner to make a wise comment about Sitar)
Jeeves
May 17 2005, 4:44 pm
Taking an age to get fed is of course a concern. It happened last week but was no big problem for me because I'd had a starter and was having a good time anyway. However we shall need to persuade them to bring the food in shifts/sittings (or even waves, as was suggested last week). It ought to be to the restaurant's advantage too.

Upquark, that was the reason I wanted to make this a special all-you-can-eat evening. That way they could have everything cooked and ready by the time we get to the restaurant so we all could eat at the same time without waiting.
All the details and menu have been finalized on sunday but I was supposed to tell them monday night or this morning at the latest. I could not do that because I wanted to take a poll on how many are Ok with it and if the price is fine with them. I didn't take the poll yesterday because it was a holiday and hardly anybody was online. Plus, honestly I wa also a bit upset about a TT newbie's comments about curry which I thought was extremely unfair.
We will definitely do it next time.

I see where you're coming from, UpQuark, and would normally tend to agree, but I do fancy giving this Tandoori place ago. Might even order a tandoori, specially.
EDIT - @ Roots, I think the newbie you are mentioning wasn't even at
curry night, so I wouldn't let it bother you. Their loss, mate.

So roots, to clarify this will or will not be a fixed price/fixed menu event? If it is then I will be tempted to come. If not, I will continue the aforementioned soul-searching.

No, it will not be a fixed price/menu thing tomorrow for lack of time but definitely in the near future.

Okay, I'll be there from 6ish for early drinks since Ram says it's no problem!

So, Jeeves, Topsy, Roots... anyone else?
If we get served as it comes then we should be okay... plus I'm ordering a starter to fill the gap. Last week I was having so much fun that the wait didn't seem so bad but for those that didn't have a starter it must have felt like an eternity.
@Roots, as for the newbie upsetting you, it turns out that she's a work colleague of mine. I told her that she was rude about the remark she made to you and she honestly didn't mean it in any nasty way. She didn't mean to cause offence... I'll have another word with her! She's back in the UK at the moment.

if we've got the whole place, then maybe each table should just order as it fills?
don't know how they are setting the table plan up, but it seems a bit daft for them to wait for 38 meals to be ready all at once.
Roots: who said, what, when, where.
I think I posted up somewhere that I didn't like curry before but then I moved here and now am currazy. Can't make it tomorrow but would be interested in a set menu sort of thing in the future.

Last time they made the table plan into a big L shape - which consisted of two separate, but very close, tables. It worked quite well.
I agree that each table should just order as it fills... ooh, I'm getting hungry!
Jeeves
May 17 2005, 7:31 pm
45 is a limit?
Ordering as each table fills would be a possibility. It would preclude people from moving table during the course of the evening, which was part of what made last week what it was. Probably the most practical solution though.

May 17 2005, 7:35 pm
well, you can still move about from table to table, you'll just have to stop where you are while you're eating your nosh
but you can move before and after, right?
@IPJ, I thought that, but apparently somebody said sth last week at the curry. IRL, that is.
Jeeves
May 17 2005, 7:41 pm
IPJ I thought what Topsy thought and you thought too. But then I thought that if that was the case then Roots was being a particularly sensitive herb to react like that.

roots never bother about comments like that and dont let it get in your way of organizing these fantastic currys. y let one spoil the fun for all of us curry enthusiasts
Winegirl
May 18 2005, 8:56 am
I can't make this week guys. Partly because of the group size but also because a DVD of Sideways arrived today and I still haven't seen it (and Winegirl not having seen the most famous movie about wine is a tragedy).
Anyway last time we just had Tandoori 3 weeks ago with a big group it was not that great, good but not great. Some of us have had it since in smaller groups and found it much better. I think I'd like to try it in a small group next before passing giving it a lower than deserved rating.
I'm going to make a radical suggestion for the coming weeks. We have 2 curry nights. We pick 2 restaurants over two weeks. Group A goes to Rest. A and G B goes to Rest. B in the 1st week. Then in the second week G B goes to Rest A and G A goes to Rest B. And we compare. Each group initially limited to 15 then expanded after both groups fill up.
I just feel 40 people is too many for any restaurant to handle without a pre-defined limited menu or buffet.
Grinner
May 18 2005, 8:59 am
Dont be surprised if Rham, asks if he can do you a "Table" buffet syle meal for a fixed price..
He said 30 was too many and the kitchen couldnt cope.
Maybe its a good idea to call him at lunch time, just to forewarn him..

Yes, 40 plus is a handful for any restaurant.
However, we could help minimize the stress on the staff by being a bit cooperative and being a bit patient.
The purpose of
curry night is for all of us to spend a good 3-4 hours together and have fun. So what if the food arrives a bit late? If everything has to happen so fast then we might as well go to
McDonalds. If you are really hungry there is always something to munch on as we chat and wait. You could always get a small appetizer. Let them take their time to prepare the food. Let us stop complaining about every small thing. No restaurant delays food on purpose so lets co-operate and make it a good evening.
Remember, good Karma brings good Kurry

My problem is not with waiting for the food. I in fact try to draw out any meal as long as possible and eat very slow. My problem is with the quality of the food being served. I'm not saying we shouldn't have big groups but 40 is just too much. If we split that in half and went to 2 places we'd still have 20 at each dinner which is even a lot for a restaurant. But still a big group to spend time with.

May 18 2005, 9:26 am
Winegirl: That's why staggering the ordering ought to help. The kitchen is not preparing so many meals at once / keeping so many meals warm whilst preparing others. So the quality ought to go up...
Eric: Very thoughtful of you but nobody else would be waiting for lettuce and sunflower seeds anyway.

May 18 2005, 9:35 am
I've been to the Tandoori twice now, one in a huge crowd and the other a table for two. Both tasted exactly the same to me so the quality of the food in the large group didn't change because of the size of the group.
I will be trying something different tonight mind...

I still don't see a reason why Ram would prefer to do a individual dish for 40 ppl and not have a fixed menu.
Roots, have you checked? I can call and check with him, but it is better to have single points of communication to avoid confusion.
With so many ppl going, I might chicken out as well. I don't mind company, but would prefer good food and good company. For good company, the drinks night should be the place. Me need some good curry!!
