Jeeves
There were 11 of us. Surely not that large a group to make a difference to the quality of the food.
But certainly a nice size for meeting new people smile.gif
roots
Perhaps they were getting rid off the left overs. I ordered Kadai Chicken but I got something else. The food was neither terrible nor fantastic. Jusk OK.
Kebab Meister
Yeah, I was disappointed with the actual food but the service surely made up for it. My vindaloo didn't have any potatoes in it at all and apart from about 4 chunks of chicken was mostly sauce.

The company was fantastic though! smile.gif

@edwin - it's a good job I woke you up at St. Martin's Str. eh? smile.gif

@roots - the free prosecco surely was appreciated! smile.gif

Yup.
Showem
Good service makes up for lousy food? You mean you would go back?
Topsy
You know what the finely-honed palate of the Brit male is like when it comes to curry, they *are* very picky... rolleyes.gif
The food was certainly good enough to get woofed down sharpish without any major complaints.
The service was excellent, the company was excellent, and the food wasn't bad either. I'd go back (but then it is not far from my house...) cool.gif
Ravski
Its not a place I would like to go again soon. The chicken was boiled and chucked into a sauce that lacked depth. huh.gif

The owner asked me how it was. I just looked at him and he knew exactly what I thought of the food. The restaurant was run by Sikh and I am a Hindu Punjabi, so I know the sort of food you should get from a North Indian Restaurant.

The guy was very nice and always had a smile though. smile.gif
Jeeves
Didn't say the food was lousy. It was just a bit insubstantial and not quite what I was expecting. Tasted good though.

I don't think it was so lousy that one should never go back. Sometimes food is not great even in restaurants you frequent often. I like New Delhi but the last time I was there I wasn't thrilled with what I got but I would still go there again.
Katrina
Mine was nice (except I can't remember the name, it was 306 though).
Kebab Meister
@Katrina

That was very amusing though... you couldn't remember what you ordered at all, apart from the number!! 306! smile.gif
Katrina
It had lamb in it. It tasted nice. It was called 306. I'm happy smile.gif
Ravski
It also depends on who the cook is.

Each cook has there own authentic stamp. smile.gif

I went to the pakistani curry place near The Arc and I thought the food was very good.

@satman, where were you
satish
Damn, seems I missed out on a good night. My antics from Tuesday really wiped me out for yesterday... (lightweight I know!)

Interested to read your comments about the food. I used to go there all the time a few years back, and it used to be very good... shame its gone downhill.

The service is good though, and a friend of mine gave the guy with the turban and a huge grin the nickname 'Cheesy Uncle'... hmmm...
satish
@Ravski dude... need to catch up some time! On holiday next week, but hopefully the week after or at the next NNO...

What you had was Dahi Lamm (lamb with yogurt sauce, spices, ginger and garlic)
wink.gif
Katrina
Cheers roots! I *do* like ginger in a curry (or biscuits, or tea...).
Winegirl
All this talk about curry is making me hungry! I'm going to miss the next 2 weeks but I'll be in London so I'll have to have some good curry. So any advice how hot I should ask for it. I always ask for very hot here and am usually disappointed with the lack thereof. The one exception being Neu Dehli, they gave me almost too hot for me. It was really good. Also suggestions about particular places are welcom too.
owl
I enjoyed meeting you all yesterday! Liked the restaurant too, though admittedly my lentil dish was not such a hit (better than the one I tried to make at home though). Roots' chicken was great if you ask me. And the staff at Maharaja are very nice, I would definitely go back there.
Kebab Meister
@winegirl

It's a toughy! I lived near Leicester and my local Indian dishes were very hot with a Madras being hotter than the typical Vindaloo (he commuted from Birmingham every day). Having said that I have had Vindaloo's in both London and Birmingham and it depends on the restaurant; some are very hot and some are medium.

I guess it's best to ask them how hot they normally are then decide from there! I still say that you should ask for hot (and maybe very hot if you're brave!) smile.gif

Where in London are you going?

Try this link, it has hundreds of Indian restaurants divided into districts of London http://www.london-eating.co.uk/cuisines/indian.asp
Winegirl
@ KB, thanks! Don't know where we're going because Chris04 is planning everything. She knows the city whereas it's my first time to the UK. So I'm in her hands.
Kebab Meister
@winegirl

Most Indian restaurant menus display how hot the dish is next to them. i.e. Vindaloo = hot, Madras = medium hot, Jalfrezi = medium etc. These are normally displayed against most of the spicy dishes and I find it helps to at least identify which are the hotter dishes. You can then ask for more info about your choice of dish and they'll always change it to your taste as well.

Hey, I had a really cool night too - enjoyed meeting some new TT peeps I hadn't met before. I was starving last night, hadn't eaten a curry since I've been in Germany so my meal went down very well to be honest! Hope to see you all again next week. biggrin.gif
Kebab Meister
Where are the next couple of curry nights going to be?
roots
I won't be there this week cuz unfortnately I need to go to the US tomorrow so somebody else has to take care of this Wednesday.
Kebab Meister
I'm unsure whether I can make Wednesday either. sad.gif
Jeeves
Where to this week? Answers on a postcard please...
I suggest that if nobody comes up with any suggestions for new places by Wednesday we could go back to Ganga (last visit was in November).
roots
I do wanna give you guys an update on Sangeet in case any one made the suggestion.

This place has gone downhill since it first started. Last two times food was terrible. Was there last friday. We ordered 10 different items with lamb and chicken. Not one was worth mentioning. When even germans tell you that the curries were bland then you know there is a problem. We also had 5 kinds of desserts and I tell you they were a disgrace to our desserts. I am not sure what the problem is but the standards have really sunk with Sangeet. The only good thing is they still treat me like royalty whenever I go there and it has a good interior but hey, I still want my food tasty.
Grinner
How about a 21.00 hrs start at the sitar.. smile.gif

We know the food is good...

And we may see french bloke and AM

G
Owain Glyndwr
i vote Sitar but not a 9pm start. How about an 8pm start, even if AM and French Bloke (Allez les Bleus!) turn up at 9 it won't make all that much difference to them.
Grinner
Sounds like a plan..

Any more?
Jeeves
Okay by me. As long as French Bloke has finished talking rugby by then wink.gif
ski
Yeah Sitar at 8pm sounds like a good plan.

Maybe I'll go the right way out of the U-Bahn this time instead of wandering aimlessly in the wrong direction... smile.gif

well, even if he has, i won't have laugh.gif
Jeeves
Can't scare me away like that. I'll just sit at the other end of the table rolleyes.gif
owl
Where is this place Sitar? If it was mentioned earlier I missed it.
Grinner
Robert-Koch str in Lehel. .

Owain Glyndwr
The Sitar is on the Robert-Koch-Str. 4, Lehel, Tel. 089 21112361
MadAxeMurderer
Bugger, I'd like to come along but I still find walking 300m a strain, like to eat by 19:00, and can't sit for too long. Maybe next week.

Footnote knee is a swollen bundle of pain after knee surgery 8 days ago.
billybob
l'd love a curry tonight - will pop along at 8 if l can find a way thru the snowdrifts.
Doesn't the curry night thread normally kick-off a big argument about something with insults flying left and right? seems pretty docile at the moment though - must be cos that scally Topsy is away at the moment... tongue.gif
Topsy
ohmy.gif cheeky! laugh.gif
Jeeves
Plenty of scallies who can't make it tonight. Although I know how Topsy likes being picked on wink.gif

So who's reserving the table then? I'd do it but I'm busy this afternoon.
Winegirl
Had a fabulous curry last night (first night in London). I had veggie madras. THe nan was better than anything I've had in Munich. Just the right spice to my dish. Great start.
Yeti
Man, I can't even get into Munich for a curry, good, bad or indifferent and some people just head off to London to get one. tongue.gif Anyway hope ye are having a great time.
pepper
Wait till you've had a Balti in Birmingham, then you will know why all the English people really complain about Munich Indian food !
Kebab Meister
@pepper

Weren't Balti's invented in Birmingham though?

I agree, a proper Balti, no rice, in Birmingham is delicious, and cheap!
More tea, Vicar?
Munich curries are possibly the worst I've tasted, apart from one I had in Malawi.

But the Brits are spoilt that way.
butterbean
Food in Munich in general, apart from the Bavarian specialities, is possibly the worst I've had. Period.
Owain Glyndwr
actually, also INCLUDING some of the Bavarian specialities. And they have the cheek to make fun of food in Britain.
Ravski
No Offence - but the restaurants will only produce the level of quality the customer demands. I went to the Kashmir Indian and it was shite. It was catered for the Germans who seem to appreciate the taste. They dont realised they are getting ripped off.

Curry places in the UK are generally better because the competition is higher and also there are shit loads of asians there they cater for too.
