I was just reminded that today is the 20th anniversary of the explosion of Supernova 1987A. Located in our neighbour dwarf galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud, SN 1987A was the first supernova since 1604 to be visible to the naked eye, and provided astronomers with a unique opportunity to study a supernova "up close", so to speak.
OK, that was all. You can all go back to sleep now.
Wanted to include a pretty picture, but for some reason I can't upload images since the forum software upgrade.
