Anyone got any suggestions for Toulouse and surrounds? Any reasonably priced hotels? Won't have a car unfortunately, but the French train/bus network is pretty good.

Toulouse is a great place and much better without a car - It has a horrendous one way system that is a nightmare! Loads of hotels there and suggest you check on wotif.com or lastminute.com for good deals - Steer away from ones on the main square even those that are listed on these sites as we found they weren't good. Check out my my article on it on my website www.piptravelnews.co.za under Europe and you will see a feature called Tempting Toulouse. My suggestion is stay somewhere away from Toulouse if you can, the prices will be much lower and you will get fantastic food at brilliant prices further away - Castres, Lavaur, etc. PM me if you want more info... I think it's worth it to go check out Carcassonne. It's a big tourist trap, but it's still cool to see.

thanks for the tips! I am going over Easter (but for a week), assuming the weather will be conducive to sitting outside by then.

The city is really nice to visite, and you can find some hostels which are not to expensive. I would personaly spend 2-4 just for Toulouse.

If you want to take a train and see a bit around I would suggest castelnaudary then carcassone then Narbonne and finaly perpignan. A day each I am sure there is train every morning or evening to switch city.

If you find information which are only in English I can tranlate.

Thank you koubiak too for your info! I have checked out some train schedules already, and there is indeed a very good network.
