from what i've heard, bleach is illegal here. it would be nice to have some though, since the hard water makes my whites all dingy.

Try Müller at HBF or a big Tengelmanns but for bleaching clothes I hear from pervy skinhead friends that German bleach is less strong than in the UK, even if the same Domestos brand. Germany doesn't do bleach for 50 cents a litre like the UK, maybe they are less dirty?

Try [size=7]DanKlorix. Available in most any Tengelmann, Rossmann, etc. Has worked for me; you just might need to use a little more than you would with bleach.

There is also a Liquid Bleach for whitening Net curtains..
It easy to spot as it has a picture if net curtains on it...

they have this powder bleach stuff here... maybe its not as good as int he states (i wouldnt know, mommy always washed my clothes ) but it doesnt seem to be too bad.

Bleach (hypochlorite) is highly carcinogenic and toxic.

I just bought something that should help. I got it at Tschibo for 5€ - it's an anti-limescale ball and it's supposed to "ruduces limescale build-up in washing machines and dishwashers" and give you "shiny dishes or perfectly clean washing". "The ball generates a strong magnetic field in its center. When water flows through this, limescale(kalk) particles are transformed into disc-like crystals which are less able to stick to surfaces such as textiles, dishes, heating elements, etc"

So, I'm going to to try it out.

Another suggestion - found at DM - it's a whitening additive - it comes in a small box - one time use. My boyfriend uses it sometimes for our all-white loads and it works. I'm sorry I don't know what it's called.

Everywhere?

Nope.

Bleach won't work against hard water.

Sounds like snake oil to me since lime isn't affected at all by magnetic fields

@ Toronto- Germans seem to really dislike bleach- its right up there with those criminal fabric softner sheets- pure EVIL (down with Bounce- at least for a few more years)- Its around in a weaker form but they ask you not to use it in the laundromats here- please- I am still trying to remember to "add the fabric softener" -I think the last time I saw a commerical for that in the USA was in the late 70s-

@yomama: is there some secret code name for bleach here then? I couldn't find the literal translation (Bleichmittel) on any of the bottles in the stores I've looked (too numerous to mention...)
grtho
Look for the bottle design, it's usually a sturdy plastic dark blue.

"Hygene Mittel" I think is one name used.

Domestos Klorix etc are the names to look out for but NOT the "domestos" brand toilet cleaner that comes in a taller whle plastic bottle (750ml or so) that is just for loo cleaning. Bleach will generally be in a 2 L bottle.

some also have the French word "Javel" on them which also means bleach. DM at Stacchus S-Bahn/Münchner Freiheit have Domestos and gtho is right, this one is the one you'll want:

For a more ecological alternative you could try

Adding Natron (you'll find it in the baking section of the supermarket) can help with greying washing, alternatively use Ace soft bleach.
For colours that have run, Hoffmann make a specialist product though you might have fixed the stain through washing.

I just go to Walmart, If you go to the one in the south, it's the first floor, and they have Domesto's there, and I get that. It seems to do the trick !

Clorox - Klorix = Bleach!!! It's really easy to find, you just gotta know what youre looking for. Thought I'd post this pic as well. I had a hell of a time trying to find bleach here too.

Klorix is bleach, but its a poor 2nd cousin of good domestos. It depends on the % of chlorine in there (amongsth other things). Klorix is made for the eco friendly german market ...

Lidl has regular bleach in a large blue bottle in the soap section. Extremely easy to find. It is called something like Clorox ... ends with "-ox". Works just like the regular north american stuff to get stains out of whites ... I use it all the time.

Klorix is 5% bleach. Just use twice as much. Dunno why 5% should be more eco friendly than 10%, or why diluted 'real' bleach is supposed to be stronger than diluted 'not the real deal' bleach.
The hardcore bleach fundamentalists can also try to find calcium hypochloride which is 70 weight-% available chlorine. Should be just about right for all your bleaching needs, including your teeth. Comes highly reccommended for the smokers among us, and will even take care of such seemingly hopeless cases:

Maybe I should point out that stronger than 5% bleach is only legally available for German ID holders/citizens due to its uses in WMD manufacture. if yours at home under your kitchen sink is stronger than that you better dilute it before THEY will find out about it and kick in your door. Get the necessary special permit in triplicate so you can always carry it with you, leave one at your residence and the third taped to your bottle of bleach to document you are legally entitled to that kind of strenght.

something else that is really good is OxiClean. Comes in a pink container. You can find it everywhere. I can't remember what it's called here. It's an all fabric bleach and I use it for everything. Being a mother and everything I have to know these things

Try asking someone in the store for Bleiche. For a red sock in your whites try asking for Farbentferner. Yes, it's special stuff just for that... well ok it's actually for removing the color from something prior to dyeing it some other color.
