Technology meetups

Are there any in Munich?

I'd like to try and do some networking in the: web and mobile software space but couldn't find any technology related stammtisches. Are there any?

So far I have seen Mobile Monday and Web Montag but their meetings seem few and far between. There's also the Chaos Computer Club. Anyone know of anything happening on a weekly or fortnightly basis. It could be in German too.

You could trying joining Xing.com. It's a pretty good networking site with various groups that you can join, some of which are Munich-based. Unfortunately, due to work pressures, have had no time to attend any and so cannot give any feedback...

Hope this helps...
Scogs
i think more than half of the active members in Munich are tech heads...just turn up at any TT event
Freiheit
Since you're looking for something tech-related, you could try this Google search to find a suitable forum in English (the first hit, in particular, looks promising). I doubt the techie people want to leave the computers and talk in person about tech stuff, instead of drinking themselves silly, but I could be mistaken.

Make it Biotech and I am there.

Yes, I've had a look on there however most of the tech groups are not "hands on" enough but rather stuff about web 2.0 marketing strategies etc. I've been to many a TT event and can't fault them, but, would like to join something larger than an English expats only event. Perhaps will think about plan b: setting up a tech stammtisch.

Some of us do. Some of us have even developed a level of personal hygiene where we can be around others. Still working on the aversion to sunlight though.

Actually, when I lived in the Silicon Valley area, the tech get-togethers were remarkably fun and could usually attract a good speaker or two. I remember attending one by a small search engine startup out of Stanford looking for employees... Name begins with G.

Build me a web based pop3 email system where the routing function actually works and make it free.
imagi
Server or client? I presume by routing you are talking about some kind of message filtering/sorting? Cyrus with "sieve" and and a webmail frontend like squirrelmail and the "sieve" gui should work. Other than that, mail systems are not my speciality.

I went to a web montag in Frankfurt and had a great time, haven't made it to one here yet but I'm planning on going in March. Wasn't just marketing, learned about microformats, made really good contacts, and got a job contract out of it too. All for going once.

I have a gazillion email addresses that I need to monitor. I want to log into something like Outlook that is web based, but infinitely better than Outlook. I want my mail sorted into the appropriate folders per the address that it was sent too, but also want all mail to pop up in one inbox as a virtual double until I have read it. I also want to be able to mark it as respond later so that it doesn't disappear into the folders where it belongs until I have taken care of it.
Actually, this would be an awesome upgrade to Gmail capabilities and worth a fortune I would imagine.
imagi
The way the web based email accounts make money is through people eyeballing their adds on the website. If they were to all expose an IMAP or POP interface to the world there would be no reason to go to their cluttered website. So could be tricky. Having said that, I just looked up Squirrelmails plugins and there is one that injects your hotmail into your squirrelmail spool - where it could then be sorted and filtered however you like. Perhaps I could look at this as a weekend project sometime...

Back to the group through - I was thinking along the lines of a group called something like "MUCTec" or "Silicon Valley Refugees", a guest speaker and a couple of beers per event. Perhaps every 2 weeks. We could talk about Eurovol's IMAP server problems, Web 2.0 (can't believe I just used that hideous term), mobile/handy software development (an area that I think will be even bigger than now), VOIP, Linux and startup/garage type endevours that people are working on. I see the group covering a space left by mobile monday and web montag. And that doesn't just mean that we meet on Tuesdays... My problems with them is they are so infrequent and don't cover the integration of technologies between platforms - something that I believe the next real boom will have to embrace.

I have 2 potential speakers in mind. Venue ideas welcomed.
moran
Hi,

I'm a contract programmer with Siemens COM (soon NSN). I would be interested. Not sure about venue. Maybe someone can provide a conference room near a pub!

Cheers,

John

Pleased to know. I'll collect names. If anyone else is interested just add your name here, I'll setup a wiki to collaborate. Also please add days of the week that don't work for you and I'll try and work around them. I can't guarantee anything yet but if we hit around 10 names, I'll book a table and room somewhere convenient and cue up the first speaker - probably Robin Slomkowski who works at Flock (social web) to talk on social networking and the web (and *gasp* web 2.0 stuff).
z'monkey
could probably supply a couple of eMarketers to a good speaker ...
imagi
That could be interesting. I've been thinking about a new product and one of the hardest parts for me (as a techie) has been how to get my head around the marketing stuff. I think I speak for others when I express my mistrust of marketers (from many years of implementing some really bad ideas). But in thinking of my own product, realise that marketing can have a useful role.

These e-marketers wouldn't be the same ones that do mass e-mailings? I don't think they would find a very receptive audience in our group.

So we have 3 potential speakers now.
z'monkey
I meant I could supply a couple of eMarketers as part of the audience...

As to your mistrust of Marketers, well frankly that's a great way to move your 'new idea'.
Suggest you judge the quality of a person based on, well the person... and not some random droppings.

And no, it's not about SPAM.

Let's see ... the web is us... some of us are Engineers, IS, Physicians, or have communications degrees...
imagi
Ok - looks like "Silicon Valley Refugees have a place to meet and a speaker. Robin will be speaking on Web 2.0: The thick client for Web 2.0.

We'll meet on Tuesday 13th March. Starting at 7:15. I've reserved a table at Marktwirt, Heiliggeiststrasse 2, near Viktualienmarkt. Guests are very welcome. The talk should be about 40 mins long followed by some beers and food. For more information, I've setup a google group to track events: Silicon Valley Refugees Google Group. eMarketers welcomed too. wink.gif

sounds like good fun, a techno commercial would like to join!

FYI

There is always the berklix.org lot, they are seriously unix and some won't even talk to you if you use Microsoft.
There is a CCD stammtisch, second wednesday
There is an IEE/IEEE/Faradays regular monthly meeting.
There is MECC (Munich contractors and consultants engineers/Electronics something or other) also berklix orientated.

I think there are enough key words here to find details on Google
DustPuppy
I was at Marktwirt tonight and asked, but there was no reservation for a Silicon Valley Refugees group. huh.gif Too bad. It sounded interesting.
Gen
Probably reserved under another name. It would be a good idea to post that name here next time, imagi. And to post the details again maybe a week in advance and the day of... I totally forgot about this. sad.gif
imagi
Really sorry to have missed you. Next time it'll be under "Silicon Valley Refugees". Marktwirt can be a bit of a maze of vaults and secluded alcoves.

Will also post some reminders the day before. Alternatively there is a calender feed that can be imported - here.

Looking forward to seeing you next time.

looks like the Toytown posting code doesn't like webcal:// links. Here's the raw link: webcal://www.google.com/calendar/ical/91682os4uk8bjh32b07g8nekdc%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics
