As I don't have a life, my time is quite flexible. As far as I know, we have no plans for those dates.

Would anyone be willing to meet for coffee one-to-one to swap books?
marymanu
GreyWitch,
I would be more than happy to meet up one on one for books and coffee. I only work a few hours a week so my time is flexible. When did you have in mind?
GreyWitch
Where do you live? I live in Holm-Seppensen which is about 45km from Hamburg but the train station is a block away. As I need to go to the British shop off Eppendorferbaum, I could combine the trip.

Any books I swap would be yours to pass on. Other than Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimon, I don't re-read books and need to reduce the amount I have. Also, I don't have to worry about having them returned, for this reason I never lend out any Discworld book and would want Gaimon returned.

I read to escape so most of my books are escapism fiction such as fantasy and mystery. I do branch off into other genres if the book is good; The Time Traveler's Wife, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Wicked, Son of Witch, and all things Neil Gaimon (and DVD of Neverwhere), Edward Rutherfurd, Dickens, Austen, Trollope etc.

I recently bought a Palm TX for reading eBooks (very good) and no longer need to keep my Classics because they can be gotten free from Project Gutenberg and other places. I am willing to give them all to a good home; but as I have so many, anyone wanting them would have to come here.

I have tried to donate my books to the local library but I have too many. If anyone knows of an organization that would accept a large quantity of books in English, please let me know. I would rather give them away than take them to Stressemann St for 1 EUR each.

I am going to have to gather my books about me a make a list.
marymanu
GreyWitch,
Time Traveler's Wife... my all time favorite book! I loved Neil's Stardust. And Project Guttenberg is fabulous, isn't it? My husband found a book on there from 1887 that he couldn't find anywhere else. We would love to come get some of your classics - I have made a pact with myself that I am going to read more of them.

Everyone,
As for the official bookswap, after private messaging with both Kathryn (Koala) and Adi, it seems the best date for all of us is Saturday, July 21st. The first time we met at Cafe May in Eimsbuettel and it was lovely. Smoke free, lots of space, delicious coffee and goodies. Grey, if you are going to the English Books and Foods shop, you can walk through the S-Bahn there on the corner over to the U-Bahn and it would be just a few stops up the U-2 line for you.

Kathryn,
Would you be willing to make a reservation for us at Cafe May for the 21st? You pick the time as I know you have limited amounts of it.

Looking forward to seeing everyone then!

Laurel

Me too!!

What time?

I have posted a Blog of the books I have to swap/give, GreyWitch's Blog. If you are interested in a particular book and will be at the Swap, let me know and I will bring it.

Laurel, let me know if you want a particular Classic, I think I have them all; Trollope, Hardy, Austen, Bronte, Dickens, etc. and I've collected several DVDs of the Classics which I would want back. Some I bought and some recorded from TV (Gods bless satellite). Besides Gutenberg, another great source of eBooks is ftp://ebook-archive.myftp.biz:47624/. I doubt that I will live long enough to read all those I've collected. I can be anal when it comes to reading COMPLETE series of books; I wanted to read Evanovich but didn't want to buy all of them, I got them from this site. I think I'll look for Lemony Snicket next.
Hammonia
Wow, this is about the first time I actually can make it to one of your bookswapping meetings smile.gif

Will keep the 21st free and be there, don't have A LOT to swap though, cos I've only been reading English books for abt. 2 years now and have given away a lot of them already.
Hope you don't mind. smile.gif
marymanu
Kathryn,
Adi said he could make it on the 21st. I just got a PM from Shell, he will be out of town for this one but wants to be included for August. 3 pm sounds perfect.

Karin,
glad you will be able to come! Don't worry about it if you don't have a lot of books to bring, from the sound of it there will be plenty there for everyone.

Grey,
I don't really know which classics I want, I will try to make a list, and in the meantime I want to look over your blog of books. How do I get to it?

Laurel
Ps. I have something else to be excited about on the 21st. The new Harry Potter comes out! Yay!

Grey,
I don't really know which classics I want, I will try to make a list, and in the meantime I want to look over your blog of books. How do I get to it?

At the top of the page, there's a BLOG link; to make it easy, I titled it 'Hamburg Bookswap'. These are only the books I bought through Amazon. I've got to find all my boxes and see what else I have. Do you have a favorite Classics author? I could bring those. Have you ever read Trollope's Barchester books, I like those, and BBC adapted it but I don't know if I have that one on DVD.

On DVD I Emma, Pride & Prejudice, Pesuasion, He Knew He Was Right, The Perfect Husband, Washington Square Vanity Fair (my all-time favorite), Dombey & Son, North & South, etc.

i'd like to join in, too.

Grey,
I sent you a PM of the books I would like you to bring. If no one else requests anything, maybe just bring some of your favorites from this list.
GreyWitch
No one else requested any books so tomorrow I'll gather together the ones you requested and any you might like from the choices you made.

see you Saturday,

he asked, half in jest yet

Hammonia
It's this Saturday, July 21st - it's in the title of this thread biggrin.gif

@GreyWitch
What a list! Really difficult to decide. I'd like to have a look at the Practical Guide to the Runes and the 2nd Cunningham book you mentioned, have got the Guide for the Solitary Practitioner in German already.
Could you maybe also bring Mary Higgins Clarke? Have read many of her books in German and would love to try one in English.
Also would like to read the Monarch of the Glen and the books from Katherine Neville (think Mat might also like them).

Thanks in advance. Looking forward to Saturday!
silty1

Hello everyone,
Just confirming Cookie and I will be there along with two friends who are looking forward to it as well.
See you in a few hours,
Laurel
marymanu
Koala,
You and I sure have the same taste in books! (And that's a good thing for us swappers!) I requested that Grey bring a lot of the same books. We'll just have to fight over them. It sounds like there will be plenty of books for everyone. It's exciting that this is finally taking off.
See you soon,
Laurel
Steph0313
That was a great book swap. Thank you to all the organizers. I have come home with a great pile of books and can't wait to get stuck in.

Lovely to meet everyone and look forward to doing it again.

Cheers,

Steph0313
Hammonia
Yeah, it was really nice to meet you all - and thanks for that huge pile of books - Mat was stunned when he saw the big bag I was carrying... wacko.gif
marymanu
Yep, the book swap was a huge success. Thanks to all who helped to organize and all who came. Matt and I are very happy with our large pile of books as well. And you will all be happy to know that my Harry Potter 7 was waiting for me at my neighbor's when I got home. I've only just now resurfaced... =0)

Let's keep this up and meet up next month to swap books again.

Laurel
Hamburg Koala
we'll be doing well to have plowed through our piles in a month though! ;-)

all the same, how's about Sat. the 25th of Aug. or Sat. the 8th of Sept.?

and MY Harry Potter was NOT waiting for me - GRRR. Still not there and boy, am I suffering!
have to avoid so many things in order not to have it spoilt! boo hoo hoo
marymanu
Koala,
I'd lend you mine but Matt is halfway thru it already. Let me know if you still haven't gotten your's in a day or so and you can borrow mine, he should be done by then.
L
Hamburg Koala
@ marymanu - thanx, that's sweet, but the good news is...

TA DA !!!...

I now get my Harry Potter FOR FREE!! As compensation for no delivery! And it has since been sent so should be there tomorrow.
Hooray!!
GreyWitch
I bounce between amazon.de and .co.uk, somehow I pre-ordered from .co.uk. I won't get my copy until Thursday!!!

I also am being very careful of what I read so as not to spoil it. I know some fool will read it and flash a spoiler 5ft high across the internet '-(

Very much enjoyed the meet and meeting y'all. Haven't begun reading any of the books yet as I'm still reading "Our Mutual Friend". Have to finish the book before I watch the DVD. Also "Martin Chuzzlewit".

So many books, so little time.

GreyWitch

Hey Robert, how about you swap some of YOUR cash for MY books? Last time I called, your store wasn't buying anything. Has that changed? I've got loads of books to bring in.

howse about we set up a new book swap meet?
I've still got piles of books from last time, but it would be nice to see you all again (and Silty - I've still got some of yours you wanted back...)

My suggestion: Saturday 20th October 3 pm at cafe May.

Any takers?

I would like to swap books.

Terry Prat Coehlo Auster are being asked for. Other than that still well stocked or under frequented, as one sees it.

marymanu
Koala,
Cookieaddict and I are in for the 20th. Still have lots of books but it was tons of fun! See you there!
Amanda214
I will also try to make it on the 20th. It would be motivation to finish a few books, so I'll have something to bring!
Piggystardust
Hi bookworms,

Happy to see this threat as I love reading, am new to Germany and would love to have an excuse to get out and meet some people.. but cannot make it to many nights out due to having two kids at home and no babysitter smile.gif I just wondered if I could come along to the next meeting? I don't have time to type up all the books I could bring (respect to grey witch!).. I'll grab a selection that I've enjoyed and see if anyone wants one.. would that be ok?

Cheers,
Bren
Hamburg Koala
@Bren: absolutely - that's how we all do it! No need to type, just bring along, anyone and any book is welcome. We tend to pile on the table and see who wants what. The Cafe May has a non smoking "lounge" area and serves coffee/cake/snacks etc.

Looking fwd to seeing you!

@amanda - u 2 of course!
Piggystardust
If anyone likes Patricia Cornwell I have most of her books in a box in the attic, I'd take some down if anyone has a request for one. Otherwise I'm thinking of taking a few Ian Rankin (will have to ask my boyfriend first, they're his smile.gif, Zadie Smith, Tony Parsons and Andrew Taylor. Will see how much I can carry!

Bren

@Piggystardust - We always meet up on a Saturday afternoon as some of us work evenings and/or have children. This one will be on the 20th at 3 pm. I'm bringing a big stack - hope to see y'all there!
Hammonia
Will try to be there, too.
Also have a big pile - don't get to read as much as I'd like to so will return a few of those I WAS BEING FORCED!!! to take last time laugh.gif
