Best way to get cash whilst in Germany short-term

ATM withdrawals vs. bank exchanges etc.

Starting this month, I'll be maintaining two residences, one in Munich and one at home in the states. I'm not planning on becoming a "resident" of Germany b/c the amount of time I'll be there falls inside of what's allowable for a tourist visa. So my question is, what's the best way to get cash to Germany? During the time that I'm there, I can just carry USD or Euros and exchange at a bank if needed, but for the time I'm not there, I need to get cash to my roommate to pay for my share of the rent, etc. Good ol' paypal just kills you w/ fees for any significant amount of cash, so I'm looking for alternatives.

Thanks for any help,

JC

Just use an ATM to withdraw cash from your US bank account. Pay your housemate in advance for the periods when you'll be away.

You can do an account transfer of funds, but you will need your roommate's bank name, acct. number, and routing number. Call your bank to ask for the fee, usually it's $12 to $20. You have to do it over the phone, and they'll ask you all sorts of questions for security. But that's how I send money from my US account to another US account while I'm in Germany. It takes 24-48 hours.
