An everyday story? Yes, but this one has a special and very bitter twist: Wehr has been trying for a year, i.e. since right before the Olympics in Turin, to have Ingo Steuer removed from his post due to his activities as IM Torsten in the 1980s. Steuer had to file for an immediate injunction for permission to coach his figure skating couple Aljona Sawchenko/Robin Szolkovy during the tournament and has been under pressure ever since for not disclosing these activities to the West German association when he joined after the reunification in 1990.
Steuer and his partner Mandy Wötzel went on to become the most successful figure skating couple since Marika Kilius/Hans-Jürgen Bäumler in the 1960s and 1970s. During their career which ended in 1998 after winning the bronze medal in Nagano no one bothered looking up on Steuer in the Stasi archives. The truth wasn't divulged until eight years later when Germany feared press slurs regarding Steuer's past during the Olypmic Games in Turin and tried to fire him.
Now, Wehr has fallen into the same trap. MDR's daily news show "Sachsenspiegel" has confirmed that it is in possession of a copy of Wehr's cooperation agreement. Martin Böttger, Head of the so-called Birthler-Behörde in charge of the Stasi archives, has confirmed the existence of a 300 page dossier. The Birthler-Behörde will stage a press conference tomorrow.
Johannes Wehr up to now has declined any statement regarding the consequences of this discovery.
