Passport expiry while in Germany

How this affects your travel, advice on what to do

I have this friend...
who has had it pointed out to him last night that his UK passport has just expired. Clearly this piece of utter carelessness means that he cannot scoot back to the UK and get it renewed there.
What's the least-worst move in the circumstances??
Other info...my friend is married to a German and does not need to travel out of Germany for several weeks.
Also, as a side issue, my friend's been told you are not allowed into Germany on a passport with less than 3 months to run on it, yet he's been to flown in to Germany from the UK three times during this 'last three months' period and the German passport control people let him in without a comment each time.

Having read that have just checked mine. Phew...ok biggrin.gif

EDIT. They will probably let him out of Germany on an expired passport, just won't let him back in. Had the problem a couple of years a ago with Alex. We came over from Germany to the UK for New Year and when we went to catch the plane at Stansted home they wouldn't let Alex on as his passport had expired in November blink.gif . Bad mummy never noticed.

Read the relevant section on the British consulate website. It shouldn't matter that it has already expired, just get on with it quick smart.

Fill out the form, send it along with the old passport, 2 b&w photos and whatever else they require along to the appropriate address. If it were me under said circumstances I'd go to the consulate in person or at the very least phone them for peace of mind.

Whoops. unsure.gif Guess I know where I'll be spending monday during consulate hours.
Renia
In the British consulate?
DDBug
No - the US consulate. We have one, too. smile.gif

Much appreciated.
I live near Frankfurt so best bet probably to head in there pdq and face the music.
I'm UK resident, by the way, but hope to be able to change residence to Germany later this year when I should be able to spend more time here.
Interesting that you can get in to Germany with a passport that's about to expire without comment from the passport control people - I would have thought they would at least question you about when you were proposing to return to the UK.

Well then this morning I'd just phone and say Yo Homie, whasssup, no hang on, wrong embassy. Try, Good day sir/madam (delete where appropriate), might I be so bold as to enquire...etc.

I am trying to get a more definitive answer than this of course- but as usual TT is my first port of call.

My daughter´s Aust passport has three months and two weeks to run before it expires- I only just noticed this tonight sad.gif. We are flying to Portugal tomorrow for a week. So, we are there and back before 3 months are up. Potentially a problem??

Panicking!
Carm
nope, because you are still in the EU, so you will be fine.
Renia
You sure (as you can be)?
Carm
Portugal is in the Schengen (whatever) so you can travel no problems, they will only check the passport for ID at the airport, but there is really no passcontrol.

You can always check the Portugal webpage, and the info should be there.
Renia
smile.gif Thanks
Carm
off myself to double check that I need no Visa for Thailand now , I have already checked it, but now I am getting worried. blink.gif

Yes he can. You can travel on an expired passport. It might be easier to use the ferry/tunnel than fly though. Mine was four months out of date and I said so when I handed it over - the immigration officer said it was 'only just' expired as far as he was concerned. Wasn't bothered at all. They also weren't bothered when I left the UK on the same passport a couple of days later.

The consulate in Dusselfdorf will do renewals in double-quick time for emergencies, but the new digital passports take longer than the old ones. If you arrive after lunch you won't get one the same day. Before 10:00 would be best.

Edit: I'll check the date on the original post next time...
