An inquiry began in July, when an employee at a Vienna-based Internet file hosting service found the pornographic videos during a routine check. He then blocked access to the videos while logging the IP addresses of those individuals who continued to try to download the videos. He then gave the information to Austrian authorities. Within a 24-hour period, investigators recorded more than 8,000 hits from 2,361 IP addresses in 77 countries.

Harald Gremel, an Austrian police expert on internet crime who led the investigation, said the videos were made in eastern Europe and featured children of up to 14 years of age. "Girls could be seen being raped, and you could also hear screams" Mr Gremel said, adding that users paid $89 (€68, £45) to access the material.

And according to a report from the Chicago Tribune, Germany had the largest number of suspects in Europe - around 400 people. No arrests have been made yet.
