I saw on billboards on the way to work that the German Vanity Fair will go on sale tomorrow. The website's not so active just yet, but you can already apply for money-saving subscriptions. It's going to be issued weekly, unlike the monthly US version, so let's see if it can rise to the challenge. I wish them a lot of luck, we need some more glamorous mags on the shelves here! I'll buy the magazine tomorrow and take a look. Here's the Spiegel's online article about it.
Carm
I saw that on the news last night, suppose to be selling for 1Euro- might have to pick it up.

First issue has Til Schweiger on the cover and there's a launch price of 1€ - it isn't yet clear whether they will use translated syndicated articles from the US & UK issues (like the recycling between US Allure with DE Glamour, DE Glamour and US/UK Glamour, DE Myself & UK Easy Living, US Self and any of the DE or UK ones...).
Hopefully they will continue in the higher standard of fluff & news shown in Vanity Fair and won't go towards the Bunte/Gala sales. And to keeping the level of writing and writers they are known for.
Weekly is good for the German market - there's a weekly mag tradition here, like in France.
Elfenstar
yup, til schweiger is on the front cover. saw an advert a few days back. but it will be in german folks!
Moonboot
so picked up a copy this morning (it was sold out in the first shop I went to!) it's a doorstep at 328 pages!
nice glossy mix of news, style, culture and people articles, lots of ads though, just like the other Vanity Fairs.
oo not just German-related articles either, there's a lot of international stuff. and all for 1€! it's gonna take me yonks to read though, but good practise for my German I guess smile.gif

What sort of magazine is Vanity Fair? Lifestyle, fashion, news, celebrity gossip, films, women's?

Yes.

Phwoooar! some nice pics of Til in the mag *fans self*.
& Brad & Ange just bought a pad in Berlin-Mitte. wonder if they'll join TT?
sfgirl
Actually, Vanity Fair has alot of political material as well as fashion, and not much Gala-esque gossip. The January U.S. Edition, for example) had a very good article on the Neocons and their reaction to the Iraq debacle. I am very pleased with the introduction to Germany!

What do you think their user names would be?

The Smiths? Brangie in Berlin? I wonder when they'll adopt a kid from Eastern europe...

So where is this fair located? Though I am Vain sometimes, I used "Search" but cannot figure out where this fair actually is.
Can any one help?
take care,

The magazine is actually pretty good.. I am going to be getting a lot of practice reading German.. there is an article about the artist Georg Baselitz.

Berlin has a wonderful VIBE... 600 sqm apartment though.. who is actually going to be living in it? ME!!! I have lots of experience housesitting and I love Berlin, so I volunteer for the job of house manager wink.gif

Hands down one of my all time favorite mags! I usually read back issues from traveling friends. Just finished December "06"

There was an interview with Joanie Mitchell by Elvis Costello a few years back which was brilliant. She inspired him to write his own music at the age of 17 and years later (nearly 30) he had the opportunity to interview his muse for VANITY FAIR! now how cool is that?

Ok, picked up a copy of Vanity Fair on Sunday... love, love, love it. BUT, did anyone else find the picture of Til Schweiger holding the garden hose a bit... foofy? unsure.gif
FuzzyTony
Oh, you mean this?

Yes, shocking isn't it? blink.gif And those farm animals in the background are probably feeling nervous.

I love the new German edition of VF, bought my second copy today and have signed up for a subscription. Improving my German as well as reading about stuff I like, perfect! I normallly buy the American VF but since my German needs a liiiittle more practice than my English (not perfect but I am not ashamed of it at least unsure.gif )

And yes the Til Schweiger pictures were a bit too much even though he is a very handsome man...

Oooh. I *heart* Til Schweiger.

ME TOO! smile.gif
He makes my knees go weak, was thrown out of the Magazine shop at by the Sheraton for drooling all over their VF mags today. laugh.gif
Elfenstar
i'm not quite so sold on VF yet. first of all, it is way too much info for a weekly mag. second, the articles, while sometimes good, are buried amongst other strangely written pieces. you have to be very careful when reading them -- some are in first person (okay maybe it was just one article, but i didn't like that at all because there was no warning. it wasn't a "real" interview either). from "just a glance", I had a hard time figuring out which articles were editorials. the writing style was not consistent. okay, i jump around a lot, but i had a hard time staying on track. and third, it barely fits in my purse sideways! and no, i will not buy a bigger purse!

some pluses are the different categories and mix of people interviewed/featured there. i was impressed by the quality of the photos and glad that the mag was not just mostly adverts (like most glamour mags). it's taken me a week to finish this one. then again, if I am going to sit down for a few housr reading, I'll pickup a book. magazines for me are just for passing time while on the train or bus.

at 1€ I'll continue to buy it until the price goes up, then I'll see.
Elfenstar
okay, i'm on my 3rd vanity fair and have decided i do indeed like it. i honestly have not been able to find a german magazine i enjoy reading regularly, so i am now satisfied to have one. i've changed my perusal strategy and now look through the TOC and see if there is something i really want to read first, otherwise i just go from front to back (and by staying in categories, i get less frustrated by writing style & target audience).

last weeks photo collage with D&G was erm, well, interesting.

i'm gonna sign up for a 6-month membership. at only 25€ for 25 issues, I'll go for it. i could care less for the glamour aspect, but i enjoy lifestyle articles too.
dublindoll
I agree - those photos were definitely different!
I like the magazine as well, but I find that there's too much in it for a weekly - I'm just not getting through it all. I think it's going to be more of an occasional treat for me than a weekly purchase.
Elfenstar
agreed, it is a lot for a weekly, but i have been enjoying it so i signed up. i've got 1 hour commute each day, so i've been able to read nearly everything.

there is a special offer at the moment -- 25 issues for 25€. that ends TODAY!! apparently the current issue has gone up to 2€ per issue (which was to be expected). their webpage has a special offer of 50 for 100€, so it seems to me the price will go up again!
Moonboot
just bought this week's issue for (gasp!) 2€. am also thinking about the subscription as I'm enjoying the magazine a lot!
dublindoll
now its definitely going to be a treat! I just found myself feeling guilty throwing it away last night having read about 10 pages.

I think the price will definitely increase further - I dont know how successful it will then be as a weekly magazine if it costs close to €3
kathie
I signed up for 50 for 50€... like Elfenstar, I commute an hour each way 3 days a week, so it's great for me!
planetmoni
i love this week's front page! wub.gif

and there is an interview with patrick dempsey aka doc shepherd in grey's anatomy smile.gif
Mariposa
Oh I might just have to buy it then.
I bought one issue once and wasn't particularly intrigued, so I didn't get it anymore, but then I get bored by a lot of these mags easily. My only guilty pleasure is the US edition of Cosmopolitan.

I also enjoy reading emotion, a psychology magazine, kind of "dumbed down" for persons to read who don't have any professional knowledge of psychology (unlike Psychologie Heute, for example).
