How's this for spur-of-the moment?
Any translators/linguists/students interested in meeting up "just because"?
Lebenslust is right on the U2
Hohenzollernplatz (Herzogstrasse exit) and just happens to have ladies night on Wednesdays as well

Would be nice to get back in touch again!
See the up-to-date discussion about the next translators' meetup

Wow, short notice! Will be there if I can shift things round a bit, last one was good.

Feb 6 2007, 1:52 pm

sorry about that. Things are still a bit crazy here, at least I didn't wait until tomorrow afternoon! Even if no one else is there I owe you a drink
Tiggi

Heh? Hang on, I owe you one, I thought! Ah well, drinks all round then!

Feb 6 2007, 1:55 pm
see you there!
I'm not a freelancer, but a translator nonetheless and fairly new to Munich, so I may tag along!
Of course you're welcome, nobody said it was restricted to freelancers.

Right, sorted, I'm in. See you there!

bugger, I have something else already lined up.
I don't actually work as any of those things (anymore/at the moment), but my university background makes me a linguist and I'm potty about languages - so I'd love to come if you do this again.
Have fun!

Can't make it this time either; next time...

Something's come up - will be there closer to half-past.

Oh, man. Notice was too short for out-of-town me, I'm afraid. Hope there'll be another one soon...

Dammit, couldn't make it after all. Next time... Hope you had a good time.

Feb 8 2007, 11:31 am
Oh, we did!

Thanks DDBug, and lovely to meet you all. Let's do it again soon!

The free drinks at the end helped wash down the never ending bowl of spaghetti a bit as well

yes, I guess we (ok, I) talk too much when we meet up because this is such an isolating profession.
First Wednesday of the month seemed to be agreeable to everyone - most likely Tacos y Tequilla next time - I'll ask Raphael how crowded his Wednesdays are.

Can someone help?
Just got this in my email. Somehow my Internet no longer works except for google, yahoo and, of all things, Toytown, so I was wondering if someone could help me out:
What does this mean?:
You just got this from your employers? Shit.
Basically they are giving you notice, effective immediately (today). They are offering you 'gardening leave' (ending the terms of your contract, basically), provided you give up your rights to holiday.
That last bit sounded weird to me, until a colleague pointed out that many contracts forbid working for other companies during holidays.
Edit: Oh, and they want you to sign and send a copy back to indicate your acceptance.
Anyway, good luck.

Hang on, I thought you were a DE-EN translator?! Am I missing sth here?
Alejandra
Feb 14 2007, 4:25 pm
Well, that letter doesn't sound very German. I can well understand why the message would create confusion!
I'm so sorry Tomasino. Good luck!
Jeeves
Feb 14 2007, 4:32 pm
Perhaps because it sounds Austrian? Which would also fit Tomasino's location. I don't know where confusion would creep in.

Feb 14 2007, 5:53 pm
That's hilarious - a translator asking for help translating his notice! No wonder he's being sacked if he couldn't understand that...

Feb 14 2007, 5:56 pm

good joke!
right?
Tiggi
Feb 14 2007, 5:58 pm
Well, I really hope it's a joke... or maybe I'm wrong and he has different language pairs or something? Tomasino, sorry if it's real.
Crawlie
Feb 14 2007, 6:59 pm
It ain't real. It's a wind-up. He got bored of posting his "funny" videos in Random chat

The skinny of this is that I didn't actually get this.
Yes, I translate. And know very well what this says.
It was just a strange thing to be given to translate today, and it needed to be done urgently (needed to be used today).
Probably the most horrible thing I have ever translated. Perhaps my conscience wanted to vicariously take the anonymous person's place by posting.
Wasn't taking the piss, just felt so odd and surrealistic.

Asking what it means gives the impression that you don't understand it. If you had no issues with the content, I'm not clear what we were supposed to be helping you out with?
Maybe it would have been better to start a topic in the translation forum about work that you find emotionally difficult or something.

Not really a snap decision, because DDBug suggested the last time having a regular meetup on the first Wednesday of the month. And here it is again! Wednesday 7th March from 7 pm in
Cafe Lebenslust- table will be reserved under "Übersetzer". Who's up for abandoning the computer for a few hours for cocktails and chat? (Lebenslust has a cocktail happy hour until 8 pm. Just letting you know.) I will try and make it this time, sounds like I missed a good evening the last time.
Tiggi
Mar 5 2007, 1:52 pm
You did indeed! Am hoping to be there. Thought it was going to be at
Tacos y Tequila this time though? Not that I've anything against Lebenslust, staff were lovely and gave us free drinks!
crusoe
Mar 6 2007, 8:14 pm
Sorry Tiggi, that was my fault, I missed DDBug's Tacos e Tequila proposal (blanking any mention of tequila after formative experience in misspent youth). But Lebenslust doesn't sound too unbearable if it's overflowing with spaghetti and free drinks...
Tiggi
Mar 6 2007, 11:48 pm
I shall suffer through it somehow.
Will definitely be there and know at least one other person's coming - she'll sign up in due course, no doubt. Can't expect these project managers to be too organised, can we?!
DDBug
Mar 8 2007, 7:24 am
Ouch - my head. And I left before you guys!
But, you guys convinced me - I'm back online. So much for actually taking walks anymore

. I'll be hanging around the tt water cooler instead. 10 Pms will wait - what have I missed around here??
Tiggi
Mar 8 2007, 10:08 am
Yay! Da Bug is back!
Really enjoyed last night. No idea how I've escaped the headache again, but it's sure as hell an undeserved blessing! Great mixture of catching up and meeting new people - best kind of event. Can't make the next one but looking forward to the special birthday edition in two months' time!

What Tiggi said, but with added headache

Must've had a bad pint. Yes, that'll be it. Great meeting you all!
DDBug
Mar 8 2007, 11:12 am
Did I pay for my last drink?
(still recovering here

)
The next one might be pretty quiete - but the one in May should be a blast.

Mar 8 2007, 11:19 am
Crusoe, was lovely to meet you. Hope you feel better soon!
DDBug, think Wils bought it for you, no?
Thing is, some of us weren't entirely sure how many we'd had by the end - definitely should have kept track! Waitress was very obliging though - we went through her bills together and worked it out so we were all happy. In fact she kept saying she could easily have added extras on by mistake as she was on her own and so rushed

but it turned out fine. She did get a bit confused at points and seemed to have a lot of trouble adding things up and striking them through correctly - I made quite a few corrections, so it's obviously worth keeping an eye on things when she's on. As a drunken linguist, I was slightly disturbed that my finger-aided maths still seemed better than hers!

This is also open to translators who don't have fetters, agoraphobia or workaholism, by the way.
Have you ever met one?
Would really like to make this but unfortunately it's the evening of
the deadline... so I doubt it. And if I could, I'd probably be half-dead and two glasses would be enough to finish me off. Which would be a real shame, since my birthday's the next day - think I'll need to conserve energy and units! Will be back for the May edition though.

Well, two out of three ain't bad...
Good luck with your deadline! Hope it goes smoothly.

Bowled over by the rush of people
Well, I need to rediscover what the big wide world is like (in fact just standing up and moving away from the desk would be a good start) so will be in
Tacos y Tequila on Wed. with a colleague and anyone who wants to come along for a cocktail and a chat is very welcome. We won't make 7 the way things are looking but I'll be there from 8.

Apr 3 2007, 11:15 am
Great stuff moran, we'll have a highly select group!
I might be able to make this meetup tonight -- having never met moran or crusoe you'd have to recognize me, esp as the group looks to be very small at this point and T+T can be quite crowded even on a weekday.
Tiggi
Apr 4 2007, 2:09 pm
Gen, some people normally come through another board too though, so tonight's meet-up may be bigger than it looks at this stage?
well gimme an idea of how big the group to look for will be then. Or fill in your damn profile pictures!
