Comparing life in Berlin vs. London

Costs, nightlife, music, art scene, and students

Hi there,

I'm an 19-year-old music student and have been offered to study in an audio engineering course with schools both in London and in Berlin. I haven't been to neither cities so I'm really undecided about my destination. blink.gif

I know that both cities have a great nightlife and that London is more expensive than Berlin. Also, I speak intermediate German...well, I would like to live in a place with a good music scene, lots of culture and where I could meet many artists and young students. smile.gif

Any info would be greatly appreciated wink.gif

Thanks

I couldnt imagine being able to afford london

I would suggest berlin, i grew up in london... and london is not the city to do it in, besides london is much more expansive... people who moe/live in london end up working for the same companies, in a 9 to 5 job... i dont want that, message me if you want more info...

I agree with Artist_Aus_Seatt and Hellkhat. Ive lived for several years in both cities and Id say in your position go to Berlin. As you say you speak german, enough to jump in and survive daily life at least without difficulty. You`ll have a great time and whats more you be able to afford it. Housing is dirt cheap in Berlin compared to London or indeed compared to pretty well anywhere in the UK. Other costs are much lower than London too - eating out, drinking, public transport, things which are also especially important when youre a student. Also Berlin is a much more relaxed and arty city than London is. Masses of students there too, and unlike London you can actually find them. And in addition to all that you will have the added novelty of being able to experience life n a different environment and country to London as well.

I'd recommend Berlin over London too. I lived in London for quite a while and found the cost of living to be beyond a joke. I love London, but I rate Berlin higher and the bonus is that in comparison it's dirt cheap

Thanks everyone for the answers. smile.gif

Berlin seems much more attractive to me, but I just don't know if my German is good enough to get a job there..huh.gif Also, the course is in German...

If I move to Berlin 4 or 5 months prior to the beginning of the audio engineering curse and enroll in some language school (intermediary level), will I have reached the advanced level by its beginning?

Hope you understand my question rolleyes.gif

i think you should be okay with the timeframe you state.

of course, what did you think people were going to respond on a berlin, living in berlin, board? 'Naw, berlin sux' huh.gif

Well, I actually posted this topic originally in the "Life in Germany" subforum wink.gif. But somehow it was moved to "life in berlin", maybe 'cause it deals with a specific german city. I don't know if Berlin sucks or not (as I've never been there), but I don't think it's impossible that someone who lives there come and say 'London is better for young music students', even if it's so expensive to live. Who knows? wink.gif
