Definately an upmarket establishment

It's a bit of a yuppie curry. Which is not the first thought that pops into my head when the boys pipe up and beerily suggest going for a curry. But I'm sure it'll be a winner. *taps side of nose with forefinger* Orable knows and in Orable I trust.

Quality food I'd rather just enjoy with good friends

Which is exactly what I'm planning on doing this Wednesday night.

I'm the maladjusted asocial misfit of the group. I'm only going for the curry.

but at the end of the day its Sachenhausen [sic]

It's not. Are you thinking of the Taj Mahal on Schweizerstr perhaps?

Let's us show respect to the King of Curry, the honorable Sir Orable from Edinburgh. He puts his time, his sweat and his tears, into the establishment of curry night, argues with the inflexible restaurant owners, who cruelly cancel on us on the last minute. wink.gif

Upmarket or shabby - who cares? Most importantly I would like to use the opportunity that it’s a public holiday and there might be a chance that I might actually make it on time for a change…so please sign me up…

Not sure if there's any more space... there are 12 people on the list and think the table's booked for just 12???
Purple Muffin
Curry night cannot turn people away surely? I'd say just turn up and they'll fit you in somewhere tongue.gif We never had a problem before
Mauddib
How about the rest of us get curry take out and sit with our noses pressed against the window outside.

Actually no curry makes your nose run which might leave a series of weird marks on the window.
frizzyjen
urgh! dry.gif
Orable
Yes, we're booked for 12. With a couple of extras to account for the usual MIA's.

Apologies to anyone who feels they have been priced out attending this event. Unfortunately due to the regularity of curry night it's also important to keep the event fresh and that means trying new places every once in a while. Don't worry though, I'm saving the trip to the Ivory Club for after the lottery win smile.gif

20 Euros is the norm at restaurants which offer quality food.

This is simply not true. It is rare that you actually pay for "quality." If the price of food is at all reflected in the price you pay, it is usually based on the demand for specific ingredients. NOT their quality. Cheap restaurants don't buy old ingredients or moldy bread. They buy less expensive cuts of meat and don't use things like shallots and truffles. FURTHER, more expensive ingredients do not even taste BETTER, they taste different. You're paying for the opportunity to eat them, not their taste.

I think the next meal should be a sophisticated evening with five or six courses paired with wine. These 20 Euro dishes are just too simple for my taste.

I was referring to regular quality restaurants in Frankfurt, not all across the globe. There are of course exclusive restaurants too. I have been living in Germany for close to 20 years and you have been living here for few months and you get this notion? Or maybe you get this notion cause not all restaurants in NYC necessarily serve quality food even though they are expensive? I remember eating supposedly "quality meat" in some Manhattan restaurants and I have to say the meat I ate in those restaurants were not done good and were not of good quality.
I do not save money on food. That means I am willing to pay as much as it takes for good quality. Of course if something is expensive this does not mean that it is necessarily good food. You don't have to be a genius to figure that one out.

Cheaper restaurants buy low quality oil, meat and other ingredients. The price of the food is decided upon how much a restaurant is going to charge per meal to break even. Whether I demand quality salmon or not, Restaurant X is going to ask 25 Euros for it and Restaurant Y might ask 45 Euros for it depending on their cost/profit schedule.

Here are some restaurants that I like to go with my friends which are considered "sophisticated", in case you want to try them out.
Frankfurter Hof
Holbein's
Schlossrestaurant-Schlosshotel Kronberg
Why don't you organize a sophisticated evening yourself?

Thanks LIAB, French room lunch menu at the Frankfurter Hof looks interesting next time I need to give myself a little treat smile.gif

There's also a really good spa at Kronberg isn't there... Spa day plus afternoon tea anyone?

Are you attempting to discredit my statements by taking a stab at the New York restaurant scene? Bad move. There are over 20,000 restaurants in NY. http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/rii/index.shtml Do you really want to argue that there aren't any good ones. It's too bad you ended up at some of the bad ones.

You seem to be missing the point. You can buy fresh vegetables at the market for loose change and I'm sure they're about the best "quality" vegetables you can get in Frankfurt. Likewise, a restaurant can keep prices quite low if they use simple ingredients. I have been to several Italian restaurants (here in Frankfurt) that have phenomenal pasta dishes for under 10 Euro. The "quality" of those dishes is top notch.

QUOTE (Lifeisabuffet @ Oct 2 2007, 11:44 pm) *

If by cheap, you mean less expensive, I'm afraid that you are, once again, wrong. The restaurants that "buy low quality oil, meat and other ingredients" are called BAD--not cheap. Bad expensive restaurants are just as likely to do this as bad inexpensive restaurants; they may be serving frozen lobster tails instead of frozen vegetables, but the "quality" is still crap.

Yeah, we get it. You like fine dining. Me too. But your original statement, that inexpensive restaurants serve low quality food, is an unnecessary and invalid insult to people who can't afford to pay a lot to eat out. Some people choose very noble careers that aren't especially financially rewarding. I don't think those of us who work in banks, law firms, etc. should pretend that teachers and firemen can't afford to eat properly in order to make ourselves feel better about our career choices.

Regarding the "sophisticated evening," I think PurpleMuffin's point in the first place was: Who wants to drop a few C-notes to have dinner with a bunch of randos. (sorry mates)

We could always get two cases of Binding and eat Döners on those bronze statues in front of the Kaufhof. I'm sure we wouldn't be the only Ausländers there.

Look, I am not insulting people who can't afford to pay a lot to eat out. So don't put words in my mouth. You don't even know me. If I want to insult someone I would say it straight out and that in person, I don't indirectly insult people as you assume. Kapish?
Someone who cannot afford to eat out at expensive resturants can always buy good ingredients and cook for themselves. I am not saying things to make myself to feel good about my career choices, but maybe some other people have inferiority complexes or what? Good, if that's the point she makes then she shouldn't have dinner with a bunch of randos. Whatever. I also wouldn't have dinner with people who think they are the king of the world cause they are from Manhattan. I have many friends from Manhattan and none of them act like you. Try getting to know someone before you judge them.

EDIT: Please do share with us the name of the restaurant where meals cost 10 Euros which have quality food. I am dying to hear about that one.
Silly Point
Wow! Could this be the start of our first ever Frankfurt Curry War? Keep it going guys!
wrightNYC
I was insulted.

It appears that you meant you like "good food" used in the most general sense. (although you did make the statement that cheap restaurants use bad oil, etc.) I take it you would prefer to have saffron in your rice, rather than just salt. I would too. But salt is not lower "quality" than saffron. It's just a cheaper ingredient. Saying that inexpensive restaurants have low quality food seems unfair, both to the chefs and their patrons. Im sure there are many cooks and restaurant owners who would admit that they dont use expensive ingredients, but would insist that the quality of the ingredients they use is excellent.

I think New York is a fantastic place, but I don't think being from there grants anyone bragging rights. When I make pro-New York statements, they're about New York; they're not about me.

Cafe Spektrum. Great Pasta under 10 Euro.

No, of course not. But it is quite ironic that the reason for going to Taj Taj in the first place was to try and avoid one the driving forces behind the curry war. Ah well, you live and learn huh?

Count me in - my first Toytown meet. I've only recently started getting out the bath for a piss so the sophisticated dining might have to wait a bit.

Hi All

I know am a bit early but in anticipation of a busy week (I can but dream) and that Orable is not around to post the thread, I thought I'd get ahead of myself! As suggested at the last curry night, this week's offering will be at the more down-to-earth Namaste in Bockenheim.

This for me seemed quite appropriate for several reasons:

1. It's been a while since we ventured there
2. Bockenheim usually sees quite a good turn out, and there are a few places for follow-up drinks

AND finally...

3. It was the location of my first curry night in Frankfurt and it will be my last! I am leaving here next week and returning to the wee island I call home (though not to the northern parts that I'd prefer to go to!)

Anyway, hope to see as many of you there as possible. Newcomers of course welcome. Table will be booked under the name 'Wolf' (for no special reason!) but I'm sure you won't miss us since it's not that big a place.

Travel info:- U4/6/7- Bockenheimer Warte
S3/4/5/6 - Frankfurt West
Tram 16 to Bockenheimer Warte
Various buses (I think including the no. 36) again to Bockenheimer Warte

Located just next to the Uni campus so not too hard to find!

Look forward to seeing you all and having my last ever curry in Frankfurt (well.. for a while anyway!)

Nice one! I wanted to recommend this place. I was talking to the owner a couple of weeks ago, and he said we could also book a side room just for us if we wanted to smile.gif

That's cool.. I get on with the staff in there too, they are all really friendly. Do you mean the bit at the back of the place, further on from the bar that is kind of separate from the small bit of the restaurant or do you mean there's a- whole nother room?

I can't make it (again) due to book club. Next time I hope.

yeah aparently round the otherside of the bar, which you can't see from the front. I asked him about curry night there, and he said it gets pretty full during the trade fair times, so we could book the room out the back. I'm sure he said there's space for another 20 people or something like that.

On my very first ever curry night I think we managed about 18/19 folk in the back and there were 2 or 3 tables of a couple of people- felt quite sorry for them but we had a laugh.

I would like to add though, that I do NOT wish to eat the luminous green weird tasting starter thingys again!!! wink.gif
