We are moving part-time to Hamburg soon to be near our grandson. We want to furnish a flat. Could anyone give us some ideas where to go (other than IKEA) to look for reasonably priced items such as sofas and beds? Is there anywhere with a good choice and price range. We may end up with IKEA but it would be good to look around.

Can't speak about Hamburg specifically, but Domäne and Roller are two national chains with branches in Hamburg. You can also try some of these Google results. The department stores like Karstadt or Kaufhof also sell (generally more expensive) furniture.

So moving to Hamburg on the 22nd of Oct. Got some nice quality furniture here in the US and if I decide to ship my car over in a container then most furniture will go with me. If not, what are my options for quality (better than IKEA or similar) furniture in and around Hamburg? I do not want to blow tons of cash but needs basics so bedroom and sofa and coffee table etc...any suggestions?

BTW, I found a brand new apartment in Hamburg-Volksdorf...86m...quiet and upscale area with a decent club by the U-Bahn station...anyone goes there?

There is at least one Roller in Hamburg, on the ring 3 in Hummersbuettel (I think). It's cheap as chips there but the quality is a bit iffy.
Gertigstrasse in Winterhuder has some nice furniture shops.

Jarek, how much did u pay for ur apartment?? I'll be moving to Hamburg in November and would like to have an idea about wat to expect a clean quite place would cost.

if you want to be close to the center you will get less room for more money but place should be clean...but older as well in most cases...I found a nice place in one of the garden areas of Hamburg called Volksdorf. Right close to 2 Ubahn stations and 30 mins drive to center on a bad day

There's a place called Who's Perfect? located not far from Berliner Tor which claims to sell furniture with slight flaws that the manufacturers can't sell for full price. We've bought a couple of items from them and were satisfied with the quality. If your employer is helping you with your moving costs, bring as much over as your allowance will permit. Furniture here is not just expensive, it's a gouge.

You might also check on eBay for stuff within 50km of Hamburg, rent a cheap van and pick it up yourself.
