Hi, I have a question that would be lovely if it could turn in me in the right direction. I'm living now in Munich with my German boyfriend, and we would really like it if he could come live in Chicago with me next year. He is currently studying at the political science university and we thought maybe there are some internships he could find, in his field, or law. Or perhaps a volunteer program, or something like the Goethe Institute. I have started looking up internships but things get a bit trickier. Does anyone have any ideas, aside from getting married, that we could look at? Thanks, Simone

Sorry, forgot to say he doesn't want to study there because of the expenses.

Then he's prob. screwed.. The US job market is just as bad as the German one when it comes to certs and Titles.. If he doesn't have'em (And Recognized by US Schools/companies)
Then he's going to have a hard time finding any decent job. He'll prob. be stuck in a fastfood type job.. Sounds like $hit but them's the facts.

there's a small possibility he could find an internship. have him start looking. contact some of the Chicago area colleges and just inquire if they know of any programs he could go through for an internship? I doubt it, but he may have to prove proficient English so then a TOEFL exam or something. He can also contact German universities (Start with the one he's at) and see what connections they may have either via alumni or other University programs.
Or have him start contacting random firms. It's happened. I know people from other countries who've done it, but generally they are a student working on a Masters level study or through a university (either in the US or their home country) program.
I'd say it may be tough if he's doing his plan old bachelors since there are heaps of US college kids also looking for the same experience as he is.

Any advice from me is probably dated, but...

He most likely has to go through the front door on this one.
This means he has to either start a bank account in the States which shows lots of surplus spending money which will cover his expenses (it's a lot)

or

he needs to offer a company a specialized skill which the company hires him for. He probably also needs to show education credentials for said skill.

You and millions of other people are in this same predicament every day.
