I absolutely love asian and especially indian cooking. Having abandoned my friendly "Ghandi Mart" in Nurnburg that had everything, I am now searching for one in berlin.
I'm especially looking for curry pastes, hot peppers, asian cooking sauces, Indonesian ramen and interesting looking fun things to experiment with in the kitchen. In that last catergory the Ghandi Mart had "Golden Smell Chineese Bean Paste." I've never been so scared of a food in my life!
Thanks!

There are lots of Asian stores around me in Prenzlauer Berg/Mitte, but I think the closest to you (that I know) is at Wittenburg Platz. I can't remember what it's called, but I know it's there.

Hiya
i have been trying to hunt down some Asian cooking ingredients for my cooking at home, but ingredients that are fairly common back home seem to be quite rare (understandably, as asian cooking isn't nearly as common here).
Some examples include dried prawn paste, hokkien noodles, tinned water chestnuts, lemongrass, etc.
Does anyone know of anyhere in Berlin where one can buy these more "exotic" ingredients?
many thanks!
w.

Vihn-Loi are the best shops in our experience (my wife is Asian). They have 3 shops in Berlin.
http://maps.google.de/maps?hl=de&safe=...esults&cd=1I am surprised you can not find lemongrass, it is easy to find it in almost any Asian shop.
I used to live in P.Berg before and we did all our day-to-day Asian shopping in the shop in front of the Netto close to the Sbahn Schõnhauser Allee and sometimes in the one at the beginning of Wichertstr.

There is a new Asian supermarket just outside the Hackescher Markt station (take the exit of the Irish pub).
There is another Asian supermarket across the Alexanderplatz (on Dirkenstrasse)
Both are quite big and have a mixture of "all things Asian" (I mean, not only Chinese or Thai ingredients, but even Filippino ones)
There is a new Vietnamese centre, which includes a supermarket, on Leipziger Strasse near the Gertraudestr., haven't been there to see how big the place is or the variety
There is the Vietnamese Market on Herzbergstrasse (?!) in
Marzahn, which I haven't been to yet, but really want to visit (see:
http://www.hungryinberlin.com/2008/05/30/vietzahn/http://www.hungryinberlin.com/2008/08/14/vietzahn-revisited/http://shopping.zitty.de/index.php?sub=sho...Center&id=4 Except for that, if you live somewhere far-far-away (as the Germans like to call it, JWD - janz weit draussen), the local Reichelts usually have an Asian department.
I wish finding a decent Gefilte Fisch in Berlin was as easy as finding some exotic Asian ingredient, but I guess they have sorted that out some years ago.

I have to agree, Vihn-Loi are pretty d. good! And you can definitely get lemongrass there, as at most every Asian supermarket I have ever been to in Berlin. There are also little Asian supermarkets in U Osloer Str and near U Alt-Tegel (opposite the Borsighallen) for those of you who live up north.
(Off topic: BTW, the shop in Tegel sells PG Tipps teabags)

IS there such a thing as DECENT gefillte fish?

Not my favourite, we always tried to feed it to the dog when we were kids.

Donno, hi, this would be useful to me as I travel to and from Hackescher Markt every day. I looked all around the long triangular open area but couldn't see it - do you know where exactly it is?
(it was pissing it down though so my "search" probably wasn't that extensive!)
Cheers.

kayw, there's an excellent Thai/Viet shop in Charlottenburg in the pedestrian zone surrounding the Wilmersdorferstrasse U-Bahn stop. It's opposite Idea and Media Markt, close to Karstadt. It's up a flight of stairs, very near a kind of computer games store. The produce has a been a bit tired lately, but I think most shops use the same supplier, as it's never better at another shop. Their frozen and dry goods selection is unbeatable and very fairly priced.
There's a slightly smaller one on Kantstrasse nearby, which has a few (only a few) Japanese and Indian ingredients that the other does not.

Fribble, thanks so much for your advice - I live by Lietzensee so Wilmersdorfer Str. is very handy. I'll have a look next time I'm there.
Here's to more Asian style cooking!

Where that ver.di house (or whatever the trade union house is called) on Burgstrasse? It is the "other" (less popular) exit of Hackescher Markt. When tourists arrive there, they usually see the area and say "and what's so special about that? the book recommends going to Hackescher Markt, but this is s-o boring..."

Lol, I know where you mean now! The "other" side of the station. Thanks, I'll pop in tomorrow after class.
Just to update anyone who's interested - the Asian supermarket that Donno suggested above is great. Very handy, just outside the Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station and has a wide variety of products, from cans of coconut chunks to curry powders, pastes and interesting vegetables! They also had a UK brand of baking powder and I think they sold brown sugar (the proper kind). And of course, to my delight, PG Tips!

Yes the Mekong at Hackescher Markt is good, but don't get mixed up, it's the excellent one from Alex that was there for years and has had to move because Sparkasse wanted their shop space. So hopefully they keep going with their old and new customers. It's been my favourite for years.
Another good place is the Indian/Pakistani supermarket that looks like a wholesalers at the back of the car park behind the Humana at Turmstraße. An Indian friend of mine who first told me about it said they can speak an amazing range of Indian, Pakistani and Afghan languages. ´
There is also a good Indian near the Berliner Tagespiegel on Potsdamer str.

I'd like to second Fribble's nomination of the upstairs market near the Wilmersdorf U-Bahn. They have really good homemade curry paste there. To give credit where it's due, I found out about this from a post by Ed Ward in Hungry In Berlin---and he was right.

I am looking specifically for prawn faces. They have those, right? I especially need pretty ones.
Black1, I've tried to find that Indian shop at Turmstrasse, but couldn't manage to locate it. Is there a secret panel? Hidden staircase?

Hee hee, yep something like that. Like I said, find the Humana on the corner. Go into the car park behind it. In the far corner of the car park, diametrically opposite to the back of Humana, hidden away you will find the entrance to the market. It's tricky to find but do-able, just follow the instructions.

They cost 12 at Rossmann.
PS. That's the Asian market in front of Netto? We did all our shopping there when we lived in P.Berg. The owners are extremely friendly. And that's the only Asian Market in Berlin I know that accepts debit card.
