Beaver running wild in the English Garden

...and it needs a name

After Bruno der Problembär Bavaria, or better, Munich has a new wildlife problem: A young beaver (German link) is ruthlessly felling trees in the northern part of the Englischer Garten - willows, beeches, our furry little friend is choosing the prized specimens for its nocturnal activities.

It seems to be working its way towards the inner city, Park Ranger Thomas Köster assumes that it came from Garching (please submit comments on its radio-activity). Köster is upset, up to now beavers claimed maybe one tree per year, the situation is going too far (does this sound familiar yet?). A meeting on 23 January 2007 will decide on the beaver's fate.

Bavaria's official Beaver Consultant (no joke!) Gerhard Schwab, who will participate in this meeting, claims that the beaver's behavior is natural and typical, it's our attitude towards nature from which a problem might arise - how much nature do we tolerate in a natural environment?

Possibly, with warmer weather coming there will be a natural solution: Dogs will pick up the beaver's scent and work - well, like beavers! - to find it, forcing the migrant rodent to pack its bags and find greener pastures.

Meanwhile, the Süddeutsche Zeitung is clamoring for a name. Submit your suggestion here before we end up with another Bruno!

I don't think it's a radioactive one. Rumour has it that the radioactive mutant beavers out here in Garching can knaw their way through concrete ph34r.gif . I read something about this in the paper the other day (might have been in the TZ which I glance at occasionally, though I expect most TTers don't read such highbrow stuff wink.gif ) and they said this beast had already felled quite a few trees in the park. Removing the beaver from the park won't solve the problem, as there are so many of them out in the wild, that a new beaver family would soon move in.

But the Englischer Garten isn't a "natural environment". It may look natural, but it's a carefully managed park in a big city, and the trees are there because we humans like them, not to satisfy the beaver's tree-felling recreational urges.

"There is something fishy about this beaver?"

Not my own...

There are two beavers and they both walk into their house one leaves the door open and the other one says shut the dam door.

According to the article beavers acheive a maximum size of 1.40m. A friend of mine once informed me that Peruvians are - on the average - not very tall. My bet is this is a Peruvian, if it has to be South American at all.
Yandi
What... is the tree-eating velocity of an unladen beaver?
eurovol
Save a tree, eat a beaver.

Thats one fucker of a big beaver,

I couldnt think of any TTer who would tackle on like that, even after a session in GMs...

The report says its wild... I bet it would be furious if it knew there was a TT thread about it! laugh.gif

But aren't beavers visible in the English Garden every summer?

Sorry.
Lifeisabuffet
Yes, Jeremy, they like to hang out on the bushes and watch the sunset with their female counterparts.
perdido
I prefer a beaver over nutrea(sp).

I think the poor animal just wanted to warn us about the storm that was coming, well in advance. He felt it earlier than we humans did. And now they want to shoot him down for THIS???
Aren't we humans a bit too stupid sometimes?

Yes, but these are running wild in the English Garden. There is a big difference.

Wierdly, I have seen quite a few trees around the place out here that look like they have been nibbled at by a beaver. If I remember, I'll take a photo. Never thought it could have been an actual beaver though, I just presumed it was some damned kids messing about.
portliestgigolo
I don't know the beaver's sex but...

Today is the last day to suggest a name, the Süddeutsche Zeitung will be voting tomorrow. Quite a few Benedikt suggestions as well as Edmund Stoibibär etc. Or, alternatively if it turns out to be a Lady Beaver, Bruni (from Brunhilde).
bluedave
Registered Muff several times, dunno if it'll get in the final listings though.
sarabyrd
Vote now! But you only get one vote each. My ironic suggestion "Bene" to honor the Bavarian pope didn't make it to the finals. Matter of fact, most of the names are crap.
P.S. Uschi Obermaier from Munich was a big model, communard and groupie in the 60's, she turned 60 this week, hence Uschi Bibermaier. Oh mei!
eurovol
Nah, vote for Daisy cause that is my dogs name.
FranB
definitely think this beaver is a Bonzo
Carm
what fucking stupid names as final names! dry.gif
