Insurance for jewellery and high value items

Engagement rings especially

Does anyone have a suggestion for an insurance policy that will cover a high value item, such as a diamond engagement ring, that is often taken outside the home against the normal risks such as robbery, and ideally accidental loss too. In the home a normal house policy covers such items against all risks, but Allianz with whom I have my policy don't cover such items outside the home which seems a bit crap. Not much use having nice stuff if it's confined to your home.

It seems there's a great difference in attitude between German insurers and those in other European countries (I'm thinking primarily about England). It seems many more risks are excluded from policies here than would be in a similar policy in the UK.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I am interested in finding out about this too. I have house insurance which covers items at home, and also on holiday, in case of burgulary, but I wondered if it was possible to get specific insurance for a piece jewellery in case it breaks, or I lose it.

If anyone knows anything useful that would be great, or can recommend an insurance company.

Thanks very much.

I am also interested in this question, I have something like this currently insured by a canadian company although the actual item is now in america. The insurance will be delt with their for a short time and then the said item will be coming here and will need insuring. So anyone who knows how best to deal with something like this I would appreciate opinions.

If you want extra cover on your contents insurance for specific high value items, you can either tell your current insurer about the item and get an extension or look for a special policy. Your current contents insurance will have some coverage but probably not all - check the contract for coverage limits. Gerling contents policy (my insurer) has a 25 000€ limit on jewellery not stored in a safe, for example.
Because rates will differ according to the item, its' value and type, it is hard to give a specific recommendation.
Gothaer does offer it, but probably someone else with such a policy can give a recommendation.

TT has an insurance broker as an advertiser, doesn't it? Mods, if so please link.

PS Whatever you do, always photograph such items and keep the those pictures somewhere safe - it will help your insurer and the Police loads in a worst case scenario. You'd be amazed how many do not.

Ok thanks

I checked my insurance policy and it will cover me, but only in the case of burgulary.
I think I need a separate policy for if it breaks or if I lose it. In the UK you can sometimes get this from the jewellers but I asked here and they didnt know what I was talking about, so I guess it is best to try an insurance company.

"All-risks" insurance as in the UK is not usual (in fact so far as I know not possible) here. You cannot insure yourself against your own carelessness (simple loss or damage). In UK (and some other countries) insurance is simply financial cover of a level of calculable risk, but German insurance companies inject the inevitable common sense into the deal. Most insurance here won't cover theft, but will cover burglary which is also an important distinction. You need to exhibit a level of care over your property to maintain insurable cover.
