So, Armageddon was a bit of a let-down, eh? To be honest I kinda expected a little more weeping and gnashing of teeth or at the very least a horseman or two. Very disappointed I am.

QUOTE (Carm @ Jan 18 2007, 11:11 pm)

what, you have never seen the redneck village people around Bavaria?
Not the kind that has two (!) dilapidated vans in the back yard. Seems to be a taxi driver who lives there, we never see anyone in the house nor settin' on the front porch in a rockin' chair with a rifle crosst their lap.
The formerly 40-foot-pine across the street is now a 30-foot-pine, I saw a guy dragging the 10-foot-tip off the main drag between the industrial zone Unterschleißheim and the Autobahn. The other four trees next to it are fine.
S1 airport - city was late but did okay except for the uprooted tree between Unterschleißheim and Oberschleißheim that we passed at crawling speed while its top branches scratched the sides of the S-bahn.
Deutsche Bahn still says all trains are in the depots/stations, no news about S-Bahnen. MVV/MVG are absolutely useless, the S-Bahn ticker wasn't on (7.55am).
B3 Verkehrsnachrichten said limited service on the S1 so I risked it.

Anyone know the effect of this storm on the ski areas for the weekend? It seems most areas are having trouble today, what's the chance they will be running again tomorrow? Naturally this depends on the storm easing and on any damage being repaired.

Bit of one of my Amelanchier tree fell off. Mind you it was a branch I had half sawn through with my chainsaw but got interrupted by childcare needs last autumn and was too lazy to finish the job.
Kindergarten was half full today. Bit ridiculous as the catchment area for a KG is relatively small and no need to close those.

It seems Hintertux is shut today, and the weather forecast is showing the storm could continue to Sunday in the mountains, although not as strong. I phoned Axamer-lizum who said they have some lifts open, and expect to open more through the day, but it's raining and the snow's crap. New snow forecast for next week...
And Grinner, I phoned your office and it's open and they say to get your lazy arse in there.

Hamburg airport appears to be operating normally. I looked at

I agree, there is nary a stray twig in my courtyard this morning, though on the way home from kindergarten and the shops, a big gust of wind blew a packet of breakfast bacon from the pram and I didn't notice till I got home (as other things blew off too). When I went back, it was still lying on the street! Thats my "storm story"

@HEM, thank you! I will remember that for further reference.
@Moonboot, sounds like it will have blown over, so you should be fine.

Was hearing sirens all night, but nothing major seemed to happen in the city centre. All those dumb enough to leave their bikes outside had flattened bikes on the ground this morning (especially at Marienplatz), and some areas were taped off, especially around Viktualienmarkt. I did see a fire engine stop opposite my house last night, and the firemen cordoned off part of the road, then got a shovel and were shovelling something up off the road, but I couldn't tell what. I'm guessing it was a shattered plantpot or two.

Not if you did a good job three weeks ago. It was interesting lying in bed and listening to the satellite dish banging around above my head. And sometime very early this morning I thought - Jeez, that storm is loud, but it was only Scogs snoring. One short prod in the ribs later all I heard was the rain on the roof.

Thats not quite fair...
The Gusts last night were severe.. the winds may not have been so strong... I actually install many dishes on existing antenna mast that are not designed for the wind loading of the dish, Sometimes this is my choice due to it not being practical to install a new mast, and often due to the customer or the HV not wanting to pay for a new mast.
Believe me, this is the last thing I want.. Folk have already suggested that I will make a fortune from this... OK, So I make money, But when? I already have a reasonably full schedule, so when do I fit these jobs in?
OK.. So Moan over...
I would like to appologise to all of my customers who have suffered loss of reception and asure you that I will attend to your needs as soon as I possibly can.Geoff

Honey, I trust you to do a great job, and I know that Ol' Mother Nature is stronger than the smell under a Frenchwoman's armpit on Fridays and you just can't win against her. In Munich, an 18-month-old baby was crushed to death by a door that was torn off its hinges, while a 73-year-old man was killed when a barn door fell on him in Bavaria.

i got that from google news.
from Guardian update:
"At least 10 people were killed in Germany, where gusts of 122mph were recorded in Bavaria.
Germany's national railway stopped nearly all train services for the first time in its history. "We've never had such a situation in Germany," the Deutsche Bahn chief, Hartmut Mehdorn, said.
Berlin's main train station, which opened last May, was shut down after a two-tonne girder fell from the side of the glass facade onto an outdoor staircase.
Most of the 10 German fatalities were motorists, but they also included two firefighters - one hit by a falling tree and the other dying of a heart attack - and an 18-month old child in Munich who was hit by a terrace door that was ripped from its hinges."

I wanna say thanks to Grinner for the marvellously strong installation of my dish - the winds were so strong up here on the 2nd floor that I was really expecting it to blow off at any point... but it held on for dear life and in the end just one of the LNBs broke off (thankfully not an important one!)

Well I made it on Thursday to Munich, got the last Lufthansa flight and finally landed about 12:30am. The flight was the quickest I've ever had to Munich, I put my ipod on before takeoff and we started descending after 45 minutes! Took about an hour in total. The approach was the scariest thing ever, not helped by the guy sitting next to me absolutely pooing his pants with his arms pressed up on the ceiling where the lights/aircon is.

It seems that
Kyrill laid 6 million trees (subscribers only) flat in Bavaria, among them a whole forest above the main road to Berchtesgaden that kept the hill from sliding down. Now the broken wood is threatened by
bark beetles as the drying, rotting wood is perfect for laying their eggs. Private forest owners have been told to remove the broken trees immediately, state forests are already throwing the wood on the market. 6 million trees equals about 25% of the annual harvest.
