This morning at Glasgow I was snowed in at the airport for 3 hours. Finally made it to my connection in Bristol (a scary landing) to be told that the Munich flight which was supposed to leave hours before was still on stand. So they took me out and once on, left us for another 2 hours. By this point people going directly from Bristol had been on the plane for a few hours...wind was crazy, battering the plane and the poor ground staff were getting blown about. None of the Easy Jet flights could open their cargo holds due to the speed of the wind. Eventually, a few of us decided to get off as we had heard the weather was getting worse in Munich so now in a hotel in Bristol and getting the flight tomorrow instead...Quite a day As far as I know thought the plane took off an hour ago and is hoping to land at Munich...

Bugger, motorbike been blown over and I've hurt my back lifting it back up.
Just went out to tuck my bike safely in the cellar - just in case. Bit of a brisk wind here, but not much more. One gust did bend some huge trees to a frightening angle for just a minute, but that was it... If anything ever does happen here, I'll probably sleep through it.

ACHTUNG!!!
6. Alle Gegenstände innerhalb des Hauses an Wänden festketten!

Well, this wind freaks me out a bit.. I'm used to hectic lightning and thunder storms, not really wind like this..
The metal and perspex divider between our apartment and the next that is bolted to the concrete just uprooted a bit ago
I was in a town a few hours ago and there was a delivery guy reaching into his van for a box. The wind blew the door shut against his head (and the other door). Poor guy.. Blood streaming down his face. Ouch.

Well that was just stupid, wasn't it. Gee, it's windy. Think I'll stick my head between these two hinged metal objects.

Anyway, I think I've had sneezing fits on a higher scale than this 'hurricane' so far here.

So... what's been happening today? I've been a bit busy sunbathing after lunch in the biergarten.

Does anyone know what we should do? Up or down? Thanks.

FWIW the storm looks pretty impressive on the radar images and this also indicates that the storm is still well north of Munich, but heading our direction at a good clip.

If it's anything like what we've had today it's gonna get pretty windy - the UK was totally clobbered. 7 dead, trees down all over the show, building sites collapsing. I'm currently stuck in the City as the trains are fucked up...

having the rolladen down will protect windows from flying objects but then they are themselves at risk of being damaged. At our office they always want them left up when we leave, as no-one is in the office you can be injured by flying glass and repairing the rolladen is way more expensive than repairing a pane of glass or two.

I'm taking advantage of everyone else having gone home early, to get some work done in peace at the office. From my window, I can see the above-ground bit of the U6 line between Garching-Central and Forschungszentrum, and the trains are still running dead on time. The wind is making a hell of a racket outside though. I've taken the precaution of getting the last sandwich out of the vending machine in case I get stranded and have to spend the night here. I'm not even sure I want to go home just now. There's a building site not far from my flat, and I think I'd rather not know whether the crane has toppled over and crashed into my living room.
Boy, do I feel really dumb now. Just shows how bad my German is. I am still leaving the Rolladen down.

All trains are stopped. S-bahn is shutting down. Trams are stopping at 21:00. And Oscar is dancing around as yep no school. But he still has to finish his maths homework. Winds will be getter stronger tonight. That was the news on B5 now.

so should the Rolladen be up or down? if damaged surely that is my Mieter's responsibility. But if the window gets broken it will be his responsibilitya s well but the inside of my Wohnung will be trashed and I'll be fucking freezing for days as there will no doubt be a backlog of repairs to mind. what do peeps think?

radar linkI keep taking a look at that radar pic and, unless i'm fooling myself, the full force of the storm ( the purple bit ) appears to be travelling eastwards faster than it is towards the south and should mean that Munich will only get hit by the tail of it ? Comparing 16.00 and 18.00 against 20.00.
Anyone else taken a look ? Whadaya think ?

A common sense approach is best. If there are objects nearby that are likely to smash your windows rolladen down, if there aren't rolladen up. I have to say although it is a little stormy I have lived through worse elsewhere without having any structural damage caused to the house.
Renia i think you should just hide under the bed since you do not have the protection of rolladen.
By the way with Rolladen down it sounds a lot worse than it actually is. I have just been out for a walk and it is quite mild although a little gusty.

Big fucking tree fell down outside our flat in Ottobrunn. Two pancaked Golfs and a fair bit of damage to the wife's car - which she'd just moved to what I suggested was a safer place. I'm going to pay for that for years. The TV is suggesting that the insurance companies will pay out but we're not so sure. I'm just glad she wasn't in it at the time.

Hello everyone,
Well, this is quite an opportunity to post a Hello World message. My girlfriend moved to Munich about 3-4 months ago, and I've been here about half the time since then, often cadging suggestions off your fine community without contributing anything back again!
We're just south of the Olympiapark, and with the Rolladen right down all we can do is listen to the howls and refresh this thread. GF only just got back into town on a train before they cancelled them all, but was marvelling at the speed with which the Deutche Bahn people discovered a fallen tree on the line, came out, cut it up, removed it and sent the train along (about 15 mins). We're still having Brit culture shock, I think.
Jonyw, I think you might have just taken a karma bullet for all unfortunate boyfriends/husbands everywhere. If you go to any of these TT drinks I'll buy you a drink for that one.
best,
Tom/Steiny
