For those of us from big countries, Germany might seem small, but it is really quite big weatherwise. Try to post where you are posting from, when you say that the local radio predicts blah blah.

Anyway, it is a bit windy outside here in Munich right now, but not too bad. According to the Deutsche Wetterdienst satellite pic, the heaviest winds are over Holland right now, which is a long way away.

I agree, I don't think the Germs here in Munich are used to wind, so to them it feels like the end of the world. What a joke that people are being sent home...fucking reality check, it's a bit windy

considering it is international companies which are sending their worker home, i am not sure your comment rings any truth. my office and all our clients are working...

also, i think this panic is hyped and totally overrated. reason being that in case something happens, state and insurance companies can claim "it's been in news all day" rubbish.
flogger
panic stations and wars are great for the economy.

off to play golf.

My German class just got cancelled, haha. What a friggin' joke. And I was so looking forward to mastering the Genetiv form.

Err the storm isn't here yet. Should be a windy evening. Holland and North Germany are getting wacked at the mo, so when you see clogs, windmills and dodgy germans speaking platt deutsch fly past your window you know to stay inside.
Dangeross
The EADS 'buses' ARE mostly running now it seems... if anyone cares.

Up to 70cm per square meter within a 24hour period from when it starts. Not everywhere mind you, but in numerous spots all over Germany.

No caravans? All been blown up, I suppose.

is this a record number of people reading this scaremongering thread right now?

I'm on the North-West side of Hamburg and apart from fact that its rained all day (but not heavily) its not too bad.
Its been blowing a bit with gusts at times but no trees bent double here. Some birds just flew past going backwards...

Sounds as if storm may be just slipping by to the south of us...

i got off work early, got a bus to the Ubahn and now in Harras where i live. nothing out of the ordinary and the buses are still running. s-bahn too, for the time being anyway. but i cant help but notice that theres not much wind at all really. nothing more than a normal day, in fact, if i hadnt read about this id be none the wiser! i actually feel a bit foolish for leaving work now.. is it going to start now, or is it over, or what?
kathie
As far as I know, they were saying about 4pm as the starting time, and I have to admit, it's pretty blustery out here in Aubing at the moment...

To follow up on Jimbo's London news - apparently the roof of Blackfriars Station is in the process of being ripped off by the wind. So keep your eyes peeled if you happen to be walking down Queen Victoria Street we don't want another death!

Surfs up dude!

Absolutely! I'll grab my board, and you find me a local ocean...fantastic!

QUOTE (eurovol @ Jan 18 2007, 3:39 pm) *
All you need is one gust. I have seen it happen. Little old lady flying sideways about 50 yards and only stopped by a bolted down garbage can. Then the glass in the building above her head broke from the same gust and it all fell on her. Not a pretty sight, but we managed to save her poor little old ass.

Pah! Too hot, people die. Too cold, people die. Too windy, people die. The moral of this story is people die, in all weather conditions. If this was happening in NZ and your employer said that you must go home due to the wind, they'd get laughed at. (then they'd go home/surfing cos no one passes up a free go home pass)
theFonz
wind is picking up in friedrichstrassee!
MajorBummer
Well I am glad it's not raining yet. When I was out just now I didn't get wet. smile.gif Very windy here in the North of Schwabing, comparable to Cape Town when the South-East is blowing. Don't know what you people are expecting at the mo', the storm will only hit us in a few hours. This is like the tuning of the orchestra before the show. What worries me is that our flat is right next to a big building site and those guys just left everything outside. Big chunks of metal, wooden planks etc. Don't want to see that stuff flying around. Still worried about the squirrel.

Two big trucks got blown over on the Autobahn already. MoiLV, if I were you I would consider rather driving tomorrow after the storm. Seriously folks, how much does a truck weigh and the storm has not even reached us yet.
iain
Drove through a tornado storm b/w quadcities iowa and Chicago which wasnt very fun. Had to pull into dekalb oasis and stop. The rain was incredible but I never saw any of the actual twisters.

Hurricanes cannot be seen from a distance! They are a massive weather system not some isolated little thingy one can stand outside and watch. I love being in the eye of the storm though it's a really odd feeling. This weather outside is making me homesick.

Bah - that place's roof has been in dodgy nick for donkeys - I'm surprised it hasn't come off before. Who cares anyway - Blackfriars only serves shitholes like Peckham.

t'would seem it is the calm before the storm in Moosach. Buses 51 and 50, plus the number 20 tram are running as normal- squeeky and regular!

Yeah but can you really longboard in Munich?

Report from Vaterstetten - very gusty, have no idea the speed as I am not good with that kind of thing. Our christmas tree is having a good tumble in the garden. The windows (which are sturdy as hell) get a good shake every once in a while. It's about like it was last week in the night. We'll see if it gets worse! I love storms... as long as the internet doesn't go down.

Most flights still running at MUC. Strange. Very strange. But I got let off early so who am I to complain?

Even in Belgium, the people are warned about the storm and some could even get out of office sooner. ph34r.gif

Bit windy in Ottobrunn but nothing to get your knickers in a twist about tbh

This storm in Munich is turning out to be very similar to the neo nazi rally last year. You expect a fear inspiring display of wanton violence and destruction and in the end it turns out to be a lot of hot air. I hope I don't have to eat my words later tonight when the S-bahn shuts down...

And a little bull I would imagine. tongue.gif

I think now is the Carm (credit to Keydeck) before the storm. This reminds me of the hurricanes I experienced while stationed at Virginia Beach. The wind died down and you just waited for the rain to kick in before the winds picked back up and blew everything about with some incredible gusts.
