If I'm not mistaken the subtitle of this thread just got upgraded from "Storm Kyrill" to "Hurricane Kyrill". ph34r.gif
DDBug
Oh! My first hurricane dry.gif Not what really sold me on moving to Germany.
Punchbear
Mad - we're being sent home at 2pm because of the storm too. The German colleagues are treating it as a huge emergency and everyone else is like "Chill out Hansi it's just some weather". WTF? They're reacting to a bit of wind the way we react to snow in Ireland, feckin' country goes gaga.

At least if the Staypuft Marshmallowman walked past the window right now I'd get with the programme. Tin hats and tiffin bars.
bluedave
Always thought that hurricanes required water to form, we're 300km from the nearest sea!
kitkat64
Well, it's just gusty now. Not even as gusty as it was last Thursday, but...

it's not supposed to be anything over 35mph in Munich...so what's the big deal?

Not yet, but the storm hasn't really reached us yet. after 4pm it's supposed to get hairy. But I don't believe it will be that bad either.

haha that is so true! disgruntled irish father: "patrick go get some turf". his son: "da its covered with what seems to be some white powder". disgruntled irish father: "snowmen weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

Im ready for anarchy to break loose. I have my hoody and ski mask waiting to be used. I have been eyeing some things at the local art store that I cannot afford.

On another note I did notice the guy at the head shop looking a little nervous.
Mr. Fixit
Well no one around me is anwhere near gaga...

wind gets stronger here now. Still no panic. too bad. wink.gif

No-one believed it would be that bad for the Labor Day storm in upstate NY in '98, either (a wind storm, as well). We were without power (and water, and...) for three days. My aunt, who was in the city instead of a small town, was without power for more than a week. I no longer ignore wind storm warnings.

Great, rafting at beaufort 12+ Hope they dont get seasick easily ;p
Mr&MrsC
So what is common advise - does one drive home from work - or leave the car safely parked and S bhan/tram etc
Aelfwynn
Is it parked under a tree?
Mr. Fixit
If you can find a safe parking spot, I'd leave the car there. AFAIK no insurance covers storm damage. "Höhere Gewalt"...
kathie
All bavarian schools have been closed this afternoon, all the children were sent home. They are advising you not to leave your house after 4pm. I'm on flexitime, so I'll be going home within the next hour to wrap myself in a blanket with a hot chocolate and watch it out of the window!!
bluedave
Go to a keller pub is the best advice. tongue.gif
Lupo
On the ship: Well that´s the good news...however they´re still out there bobbing in the ocean in COLD water. Hypothermia sets in soon, hope help arrives fast. As to the ship, I wonder why it had a whole in the side. Perhaps there was an explosion on board in the engine room (usually below the water line), hence flooding it...or maybe it was a collision. People know what happened, there´s radios on board (or were)..guess we´ll find out soon enough.
DJ_Jazzy_Guff
I just had my afternoon lessons cancelled cos the students wanted to get home before the storm 'strikes'!! laugh.gif Pathetic! I'm off for a run to try and combat these alleged fierce winds. Could be good for strength training!

away from trees, preferably in an underground parking spot. No insurance coverage if a tree falls on your car I think sad.gif

Ok, is it just me or have the winds really picked up in the last 30 mins in Berlin unsure.gif
Moonboot
our office is being sent home for the rest of the day smile.gif

I have been in a few of these here and they are not to be taken lightly. For Americans, the closest thing we have is a Noreaster. The last time one of these big ones hit, my garden was under three feet of water and two weeks later the same damn thing happened (2002). I just drove home and saw that there is now a new danger lurking...Christmas trees. Thats right, all those trees piled up are blowing around like tumbleweeds. There were a bunch of them popping along on the Panzerweise and across the Ingolstaedter Landstrasse.

They have, nothing serious yet tho.

I will have an unpleasant time cycling home tho ;p
bern
Has anyone heard anything about the S or U banana closing? I heard a rumor that the S would shut down at 4 but I can't find anything on the MVV website...yet.

They sent an email round in german... all those poor buggers who cannot read the language (and there are a large number) simply left to die in their offices...
jester
Not too bad up north so far, just raining!
Hope it misses up here... I've to walk home later and some of that walk is along a canal! Not a nice day for swimming... unless your a duck!
HEM

bunch of patients are cancelling out for this afternoon... might not have to work that hard today.

They were obviously worried about the Carm before the storm.
theFonz
berlin just got windy.. im starting a petition for the afternoon off but its not happening i dont think. I do feel sorry for the poor little blokes selling sausages with grills strapped to their a*ses! The rain is bouncing a it more now as well!

Seems strange to me that there are serious weather reports going about but no flights have been cancelled uk to germany.. considering thats the direction of the storm it seems a bit strange!
jimb0
why the hell in my office they all seem so quiet? I wanna go home!! not worried about the wind, just lazy and tired about working!! ahahaha

I haven't heard or found anything about that, but apparently the rumour is doing the rounds - just getting onto the mvv website at the moment is very difficult!

a friend's office has just been sent home, I've heard the EPO is being sent home, but we've got to stay here and work. unfair.

the winds are coming from the south west at the moment - thought you might be interested
eurovol
I heard on the radio that A8 is closed between the 'hausens (that is twixt here and Augsburg).

This I can confirm. Although it's discretionary.
MoiLV
Uhh.. they just sent an email out to tell us we can leave work, but then said, "if you plan on leaving, make sure your department is well besetzt."

WTF? So, you can leave, but don't leave?

So.. I'm driving to Austria tonight.. should I not?
jester
My girlfriends office here in Hamburg have been sent home! Not a chance my place will be so kind sad.gif
Aelfwynn
What's the EPO?
SleeplessInMunich
European Patent Office
Aelfwynn
Ah, thanks. I couldn't think what it might stand for.
eurovol
Thats short for a drug known as Erythropoietin.

I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have to, particularly as they're saying that the wind will be worse in the Alps...
bluedave
No chance of us leaving, we're on rate per hour smile.gif
