Us Brits love talking about the weather!

I actually just signed up too to warn you all, but Dawg was faster than me. It's already rather windy outside. You can also check this website for more information.

At least it's not grey and raining. dry.gif
UrbanAngel
Isn't this more like a gale rather than a hurricane?
MajorBummer
We're talking squalls here with speeds of up to 120 km/hour, in the mountains it could be stronger.

agree with you fully. nothing to get too worked up about.
UrbanAngel
Ah, there is no word for 'gale' in German. - They don't differentiate.
MajorBummer
Cool. Der Spiegel just posted an article about it. They call it a Monstersturm. Nice pic Spiegel has.

Ah and I wanted to start training for a marathon today, I guess it will have to wait untill that same feeling rises next year.

I would use Sturmböe for gale and Orkanböe for hurricane myself.

While I am extremely sceptical that this will be the Storm the Century, that does look like one mother of a storm.
sarabyrd
How about The Storm of the Century Up to Now?

Lets have a kite flying contest. Why is it always "mother of a" why not father? Men do things too you know.

this is really serious and hats off to BadD for posting this. trees falling on people are pretty damn dangerous. let alone the damage these storms cause in interupting traffic and train activity. if you've ever had to sit just outside of Augusburg for hours waiting in the train because of a damn tree falling on the tracks, then you'll know to avoid leaving your house!

a few years back i was really surprised to see how many people were out walking when one of these storms came on the weekend. i lived near the perlacher forest and could watch them from my window.
MajorBummer
Thank God it's not raining though.
UrbanAngel
Here's some info I found as I was curious.

A gale is a wind of at least 28 knots, 32 mph, or 51 km/h; and up to 55 knots, 63 mph, or 102 km/h.

A hurricane is an intense, rotating oceanic weather system that possesses maximum sustained winds exceeding 119 km/hr (74 mph). It forms and intensifies over tropical oceanic regions.

-- I thought that hurricanes were cyclonic by nature. Always wanted to see one, but only from a safe distance of course!

Don't Panic!

I lived through one of the worst tornados in texas history when I was 8 years old and I never want to go through that again.

What's it like being in a tornado?
kitkat64
I'm not too worried about it (me, I never worry too much about my safety, should I?) - when you've experienced as many 'Nor'easters' I have, a storm like this is just, well, normal.

However, in the storm from last week, a tree fell across the road almost in front of my house. I hope nothing falls on my house (we have lots of windows) - that would really suck.

Will there be hail? There's nothing worse than being stuck in 100mph winds with golf ball size hail being hurled at you.
Aelfwynn
@UrbanAngel: Yeah, even a fairly wide miss by one is impressive. Although I've only gotten hit by the frozen kind, myself (==blizzard --probably not as high winds, but definitely an intense, rotating storm).
perdido
First time I ever saw an explosion and my mother screaming at the top of her lungs so loud that it was almost silent (sp).
hams
Should ask Dorothy that question. S*it perdido - you've really had some life experiences due to adverse weather conditions.

So will this interrupt my plans for the evening - at least I won't have to bother with my hair! unsure.gif

Kinda like this. Except it's darker, rainier, there's lightening, thunder, hail and the wind goes in circles fast enough to twist your house off it's foundation.

Try jogging in the English Garden while it is hailing and blowing and having lightning come down at you at the same time. God I hate the weather in this country. mad.gif

Edit: Just noticed Jenny answered. Sounds like I've been there done that. Sounds like a typical day in Munich in what Germans refer to as summer.
UrbanAngel
Rain is actually expected later smile.gif
I wish we could all go home back to bed zzzz.

TBH I think Munich has great weather, in comparison to London at least it's not pissing it down all the time and you do get to see the blue sky of Bavaria rather often.

My understanding is that a "Böe" is a single "gust"...

Wow. ProSieben was right. A tornado really could hit Germany.

Maybe the power will go out.

I mentioned this little storm coming yesterday in the weather thread but noone seemed too fussed, and indeed I think there's little reason to be. rolleyes.gif

BadDoggie
UA beat me to the explanation but here's a clarification: The gusts will be up to 150km/h but the constant winds are expected to be full gale force. The term "half gale" describes winds of 56-80km/h and we already have gusts over that. "Full gale" is winds at 81-112km/h and "hurricane" describes winds higher than that. Hurricanes are also classed in five categories, the highest of which, "Cat-5" has winds exceeding 249 km/h.

We're also expecting heavy rain, with as much as 70 liters/m² dropping on us inside 24 hours. Normal rainfall is around 1/3 of that. Check your cellars for anything that could be damaged by water.

woof.
sarabyrd
This is the kind of damage we are looking at:

These are Vivian/Wiebke pictures from 1990, first damage reports from Nordrhein-Westfalen and the coast are rolling in according to Bayerischer Rundfunk.

Word. I think having lived near the Gulf of Mexico has made me immune to extreme weather warnings elsewhere.

Tropical Storm Allison was actually kinda fun (it turned the 4th largest city in the US into series of islands). In true Texas style everybody fired up their barbecues and got drunk on Shiner.

What's it like being in a tornado?

I've never seen a tornado proper but I did go outside during a Cat 3 storm where tornadoes were expected. Once it started raining up (I shit you not) I decided to go back inside.
Kat
I told my supervisor that it's official and that I've heard we should proceed to the nearest storm cellar and drink Augustiner, but he said no, we need to go to the nearest store, buy everything out, and then go to the nearest storm cellar and drink Augustiner. tongue.gif

What's it like being in a tornado?

Scary as fuck. They destroy everything they're near, including heavy, reinforced concrete. They can blow a 2x4 beam through a house like you can jab a toothpick through a sheet of wet toilet paper.

I had to ride my motorcycle from Indianapolis to Cincinnati down a corridor with tornadoes on both sides. I was incredibly lucky to get home. The next morning the reports were that more than 50 separate tornadoes had done hundreds of millions of damage, the worst single group of storms in at least decades.

I got a chuckle out of TBfB's post.

great, guess who's got a flight booked tonight to Amsterdam... I am thinking about rescheduling it to tomorrow. No way I am getting there tonight.

The wind seems to have picked up in the last 15 minutes. When i was reading this I thought what the fuck, its completely calm, but now, while far from stormy, there's a decent bit of wind.

I've walked across Theresienwiese this morning (8 am), wind was already blowing fairly strong. loved it!

what website in English can I read about the weather warnings? Other than TT. I am thinking today was not the day to have put on my nice coat and used my posh bag!

Tornadoes are off the charts wild. The old addage is if you see it, it's already too late to take shelter. I have seen two, and you just can't put words to it. One was an F4 and the other an F5. But I didn't see them for long, as we had a tornado shelter and hussled in there real fast like.

The F4 didn't do any damage to our house, although it uprooted a lot of trees in our surrounding woods. The F5 tore the roof off our shed, but didn't touch the house. Tornadoes are strange like that, two buildings less than 30 feet apart - one gets ravaged, and the other untouched. The F5 also turned over our truck by the shed, but it wasn't too damaged.

You also get a really strange feeling right before a tornado comes. All the animals and insects get quiet and there is like an electric silence, then the storm hits like mad and all hell breaks loose. When you live in tornado country, you get a sixth sense about these things. Very eerie.
