Here's the link: Joost

...and if you have tried it, do you have a spare invite you can send me so I can try it?

QUOTE
Don't want to wait? Try getting hold of an invitation from another tester. All new beta-testers now get tokens allowing them to invite friends and acquaintances, and these tokens will give you instant access to Joost™. Get ahead of the curve - beg your friends for an invite today!

Best regards,
The Joost™ team

Waiting for my password to be e-mailed to me, NOFXmike. Once I get it (hopefully soon) I'll invite you if you want.

Joost: If you signed up for beta testing using the form on the website, you may not have been sent a password yet. Even though we are daily allowing new beta testers on the platform, there are a lot in line and it therefore might take some time before it is your turn. We very much look forward to have you test our new platform - but we just need to get it all working before we open it up completely.

I'm getting anxious unsure.gif

Cool, thanks...and if I get an invite, I'll do the same for you

Darn. This might take a while. From the Joost blog, 18 Jan '07:

Without going into a long and emotional Academy Award® winner type speech, I'd like to thank everyone for the kind emails and calls we got yesterday. We received around 100,000 questions, thumbs up, beta requests, and business proposals within the last 24 hours and they are all very much appreciated. We look forward to getting back to everyone as soon as possible, but if you don't get an immediate response please bear with us as there are many more of you than there are of us! In the meantime, please visit the FAQ as it already addresses a lot of the questions we've been getting. Once again, many thanks for watching,

Is this free?
Derek
It is free, but it's by invitation only. I've been beta testing it since it was called the Venice Project. I'm not impressed really. It's not any better than the (also free) program from tvunetworks.com although the plans they have for it imply it will be fantastic and change the world. I'd give out invites but I haven't used it enough to earn any invite tokens, so unimpressed was I with it.
Derek
One Joost invitation available, PM me your invitation email address to get it..
Derek
OK, no more invitations left now. Maybe they'll give me some more.

Who was that, Elfenstar? Joost creator Henrik Werdelin? I'd like to check out that interview despite the interviewer's comment, but I can't find it online. I guess I'll check the local library. unsure.gif

Yeah, I have been joost! Sadly no invites yet, but first come first served when I do. Who on this list has and who hasn't been joost yet?

If you saw the difference, then you would know why. Very impressed so far.

Of course these all appear after I leave. Geez.

It's a very nice application, looks great. It has some money behind it so it's not a fly-by-night thing. When you watch the content they have it works really well. If you have your PC sending it's signal to your TV (like I do, using DVI-OUT connector to Sharp LCD TV DVI-IN) you wouldn't notice you were watching it via the Internet. It's just quality viewing.

What I don't like is that it needs to use a lot of Internet. My connection is only 728k/128k and that's really on the ragged edge of being sufficient. I think they recommend a minimum of 1024k/256k. If that's what your connection is though, you can expect Joost to be using ALL of it. Even if you stop watching, it still wants to use it (to help the P2P network to allow other people to be viewing).

It currently doesn't have a lot of stuff to watch. Remember, this isn't an Internet TV. You don't tune into BBC1, or HBO, or Fox or any other such channels. You see a library of programs and watch any of them at any time. It currently doesn't offer a lot of interesting stuff.

If you want to watch TV channels as we all think of them, then what you want is the TVUNetworks player. At http://www.tvunetworks.com you can download their player and you can tune into TV channels (live) from around the world. So if you feel like getting up at 6am you can watch "24" live from the U.S. west coast Fox channel. It doesn't offer recording ability (or didn't last time I fired it up).

I still prefer to get my TV shows (that aren't on Sky freesat) using http://www.emule-project.net and getting links to the shows from http://www.fucktheinter.net (although that peekvid site looks good for links too).

Edit: I got given 4 invitations for Joost so far which I gave to people on this forum. If I get more I'll offer them in this thread.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - JumpTV, which offers "ethnic" television programming on the Internet, said it will announce a deal on Friday to offer some of its shows for free on Joost, an online video service launched by the founders of Skype and Kazaa.

A deal to distribute hundreds of hours of programming from Viacom Inc.'s (NYSE:VIAB - news) MTV Networks and Paramount movies studio helped Joost boost its profile.

More media deals are expected to come over the next few weeks, a Joost executive said last week.

I have been using Joost for a month or so now - and they just brought out a Mac client.

Cheers

Just to add a point regarding JumpTV...I'm a subscriber.

Whilst the streaming is pretty good quality there Station listing is weighted to S. America and other countries outside the EU or USA. The channel group package (cheapest was to use JumpTV) also reflect this; leaving you to cherrry pick a few stations at $19 for three months which is pretty expensive for one station.

Some work mates told me of a way to watch premiership fottie via the internet. It is by logging into sports stations that are showing it outside of Europe i.e. Hong Kong /Shanghai etc. Anyhow, check out this site: Link to site

I tried it yesterday (for ManU vs Liverpool) but got some problems with Windows Media player 11 being installed on my machine. Did see one free channel and the quality was amazing...
RJLMason
If you want another solution for free TV, check out the TVU Player:
http://www.tvunetworks.com/downloads/index.htm

They have star sports from HK which shows premiership matches live on saturdays and sundays and I have watched them for the last few weekends - all for FREE

Forget that noise, hook up a SlingBox and a TiVO to someone's internet connection in the States and you can watch ANYTHING your little heart desires. We watch HVO's Rome on Monday. all the political junkie shows (Hairball, Olbermann, etc), movies, etc. It's like never having left home!

All the benefits, none of the shit piles (ala Bush) Gotta love it.

Slingbox works great for us. We have one connected at a family members home in the UK so get all the channels they get.

Are there any invites going spare?
NOFXmike
They're not giving any currently, though if you've signed up, or you sign up right now, they claim they'll invite you damn soon! I've really tried to get invites for others here...but I haven't even gotten one, and I've watched quite a bit on there. Here's a quote from joost:

We're reaching another big milestone this week. After months of testing with many thousands of users, we're ready to move Joost on to the next stage of its development.

In preparation for this we're closing down applications for the beta testing program on the website at the end of Thursday (GMT). Between this time and the public availability of Joost, access will be by invitation from beta testers only.

The good news is, everyone who applies before we close will get access to try out joost within the next couple of weeks
tinap
I hope if I already have joost I won't lose it, will just get upgraded??? Or do I need to sign a Please Keep Me list?
NOFXmike
If you've already got it, you're fine...a new release should come out pretty soon. Viacom channels should appear soon too...and Disney has recently shown interest...

The problem I see right now, for example, is that they're restricting certain channels to certain regions, which could mean all we get is German TV (there is no german content yet...but there is french) and random weird stuff from the states.
tinap
Look forward to new channel options, though I must say I am enjoying Bridezillas!
NOFXmike
All viacom channels are U.S. only on Joost, which pisses me off. What's the damn point?
Derek
Joost was just upgraded to Beta version 0.9 and each member granted 5 new invites. Not sure if when those 5 people you invite also get 5 invites of their own. If so, then it should spread quite quickly. I have 5 going spare. PM me if you want one. I'll reply here when they're all gone. When sending the PM, give me a first name, last name and email address (because that's what the invitation sender asks for - it doesn't have to be a real name but it's probably how joost emails will address you so it's up to you).

I hope all those that get an invitation use it. Last time I had one person who got the invitation and didn't properly accept it. I'm not sure if that stopped me from getting more.

No requests. Wow. Looks like everyone that wants Joost already got it laugh.gif

Yeah, I've got 4 invites too, if anyone needs one.

Some new info on places to get your TV content. Various big American shows like South Park, 24, Scrubs can be watched direct from a website. Here's the digg link that discusses it: http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/04/04/forge...inging-content/

Another one that's not in that page is http://alluc.org

Don't be worried about the term "hard-core" in that link, it's not porn. It's referring to the fact that the sites are breaking copyright laws in a hard-core way that youtube is now scared to.
