Comet McNaught (C/2006 P1)

Shines bright and visible at sunset mid-January 07

Stargazers might like to look out for this at sunset on the western horizon, if the skies are clear. It was clearly visible to the naked eye last night, some distance to the right of the sun, and might be even brighter tonight.

Well according to the comments appearing on the Society for Popular Astronomy (of which I am a member - q. cheap to join) this is an exciting and important comet similar to Hale Bopp and all the others.

This is the webpage of the chap who discovered it I understand he used to be the Comet Section director of the SPA when it was known as the Junior Astronomical Association.

The comet is now no longer visible from northern latitudes, but it's been putting on a spectacular show in the southern hemisphere. Check out these breathtaking photos:
