So I'm looking around for a place in here in Berlin where I can maybe take my wife to a Friday night movie. Granted, we're in Germany, so I'm not expecting English language cinemas to be everywhere catering to my oppulent American needs. OK, I've been able to locate 2 places. The Babylon and the Sony center cinema. I look into selection and showtimes and it seems I only have the option of going tuesdays, wednesdays, or something called blue monday.

Can this be right or am I missing something?

Almost all of the films at the SonyCentre are shown in their Original Versions (OV), and that means in English.

Is
this not enough for you when it comes to choice? Americans, tsk.

Whenever I want to catch a movie in English, I go to Sony Center. For online reservations click here:
Cinestar Online-Reservierung. OV stands for Original Version. Hope this helps.

I was definately missing something. My stellar German skills must have led me astray once again. I checked 2 websites in German which had
X
's on everyday but tuesday and wednesday (maybe sold out?!) and I guess the exberliner website only shows 2 days out on it's cinema schedule. But thank you all for putting me back on the path - and in my place GG.
Yeah, Berlin is pretty good for OV and OmU films. Sony Center plus serveral artier places. In addition to on line, the tip has a separate Originalfassung list in their movie listings.

OK then - tell me what you were missing - I've just been trying to book some tickets to take my hubby out at the weekend and all the films at the Sony Centre all seem to be on only on Tuesday's & Wednesday's only - are they really all sold out for the rest of the week??
I'm checking the listings for Potsdam as well (sometimes the Filmmuseam here has original langauge stuff on a weekend) - but I rather fancied Saturday night out in the big city!! ho hum..
If anyone can enlighten me - please do...

SallyP - I think they must be having problems with the website. Normally the program renews every Thursday, hence the reason that under "this week" there are only films showing until wednesday. So, click on "Woche vor" at the top on the right and normally you get the program for the following week. But there seem to be only 2 films...can't be right as my newsletter e-mail tells me otherwise!!! Try logging on again tomorrow maybe?

Back on the 10th Dragonslayer's link took me straight to the reservations with the whole week showing. Not sure, but whatever glitch they're having may have been happening to me before.
I know that at least as of four years ago it was possible to show up 15-30 minutes before a film at Sony Center and get seats, but I haven't been there in my current incarnation as a Berliner.

Hmmm. I second that. The two times I went, we just showed up. Mabye it depends on the flick, dunno.

You can just go to Sony Center and buy your tickets directly before the movie (as I did just this past weekend).
If you're looking for English-language movies in Potsdam, the theater at the
Hauptbahnhof shows one each Monday night at 8:00. I think they're showing "The Departed" tonight.

In fact what about foreign language films in general? I know Cinestar show films in their 'original language' so would subs for non English language films be in English or German?
Ta!

Went to see 'Once' tonight. What's the deal with the sugar in the popcorn? That's just wrong!

Does Sony Cinestar show subtitled films??? I don't think so. Just usually English
OV (Original Version) but without subtitles.
If the film is not in English but is offered
OmU (Original mit Untertitel), the default is German. Natürlich.
Occasionally, you will see
OmenglU (Original mit englischem Untertitel) after a film's name and that means that the film is not originally in English but does come with English subtitles.
Please excuse misspellings in either language.

I haven't used the website for booking tickets for the Sony Centre, and have always just arrived and gotten tickets no problem. (Maybe just lucky though?) I went to see a movie on Tuesday night. On the website it said that it was Kinotag and that all tickets were €4.50. Yippee! Except that when we got there we were asked what seats we wanted (x2) we said the middle. Price went up from €9 to €10 on the cash register for 2 seats. Does anyone know why this is? I know it's only a euro... I did try to ask, but didn't get very far, was holding up the queue... So decided the next time I was on TT I'd ask you lovely people.

I've gone the last 3 nights and have paid a different price each time...odd.
I think different seats at the Sony Center are different prices, but I don't know the details. Also, some cinemas charge more for longer movies.

But the places are 1/4 full so surely people should just order front row seats (presuming they're the cheapest?)?

They charge 1 Euro extra if you want to sit in the middle or back. Some people buy front tickets and sit in the back anyways, but you never know if you'll get away with it...
Additionally, prices are different for different days, Tuesdays being the cheapest, and weekends the most expensive. But they price they show you is always for the front seats.

QUOTE (hmans @ Jul 11 2008, 10:57 am)

I'm looking for ... Cinemas showing movies in their original language. If you've ever been to Munich (I lived there for 4 years), maybe you know "
Museum Lichtspiele" or "
Cinema". I'd love to find something similar in style to those. Any suggestions?
in Potsdammerplatz at the Sony Cinestar Theater is an English language theater. Be sure to look for the designation : OV
Which is Original Verfassung - original condition

Or even Originalversion. Like original version.

Thanks for the Cinestar suggestion. I assume it is a big multiplex kind of place. Do you know any small, cute, creative theatres? I was fond of Munich's Museum Lichtspiele because it was obvious that the place was run by people who're crazy about movies. It's such an enormously different movie-going experience compared to the big places.
