New S-Bahn stop Friedensheimer Brücke

Planned to open in 2009; Update: now Hirschgarten

A plan that has long been discussed between Deutsche Bahn, the State of Bavaria and the City of Munich will now be carried out: Munich will receive a new S-Bahn stop at Friedensheimer Brücke, between Donnersberger Brücke and Laim, to be serviced by all lines except S7 and S27 that join the joint track at Donnersberger Brücke, and S20 (non-stop Pasing/Heimeranplatz and return). Due to the development of the new residential area Birketweg in Neuhausen the Deutsche Bahn and the State of Bavaria have given the go-ahead for the project, construction will commence in spring of 2008. The construction teams, however, are on a tight schedule as they will be using surfaces intended for the second S-Bahn tunnel as storage space for their material and equipment. The first trains are expected to service the new stop in mid-2009.

Some 15,300 passengers from Neuhausen and Laim and are expected to use the new stop daily, not to mention people heading for the near-by Hirschgarten with its park, playgrounds and Biergarten. However, the extra 1.2 minutes necessary for integrating this new stop into the existing schedule will cause serious headaches until the second S-Bahn tunnel is completed. Currently, 30 trains pass the tunnel every hour in each direction, making the joint track the most frequented stretch of railroad in Europe.

Do you have a reference for this? Our local paper said it was slotted to be finished for December 2007 (unlikely, and originally it was supposed to be 2004 anyway). Currently the Baureferat has it pencilled in for construction start now, trains starting end 2008.

Süddeutsche Zeitung, as always. I cannot link to it as the article is on their e-paper site.

i'm not sure what the point is and if it really is worth the money and effort. how far is it from laim to donnersbergerbrücke to really warrant a new stop. that stretch of munich is well connected already. i know you quote 15,300 people would use this stop daily, but are they really thinking 15,300 extra people will use this stop or just the people who used the tram or u-bahn instead will use this stop?

Would disagree, if I may, with you there. That part of munich is areal pain in the arse to get too, and the strtch between Laim and Pasing is, for Munich, quiet long. With all the redevelopment taking place a new S-bahn stop would make it quiet an atractive area. Long time over due in my opinion, especialy as DB is selling of all their unwanted real estate in the area, which does amount to a fair bit of developable land.

I like the look of all that spare land now appearing along that stretch. If you look on Google Earth you can see they have reomved all of the tracks leading to the Postpakethalle. The big rounded hanger place.

I want them to create a cycle path from Hackerbrücke right out to Nymphenburg.

When the S-Bahn arrives there Backstage will probably get thrown out and replaced by much unneeded office space.

Seems to be part of the general plan, according to the link I posted above - that they will connect the new settlement to pedestrian and cycle tracks alongside the railway from Hauptbahnhof to Pasing.

From Hirschgarten you can pretty much get all the way to Pasing through greenery, although they're making a bit of a mess of it just north of Laim station at the moment.

Excellent! that part of Munich was a real arse to get to.

the architects website Allmann Sattler Wappner lists the project as 2006...but is not very friendly for gathering more info. For those who may be interested, they also did Herz Jesu Kirche in Neuhausen which is worth a visit
Guy
The local paper has an article here, which seems to say the same as the SZ that sarabyrd quoted.

there is one along Arnulfstrasse. Or do mean a path near the railway?
ian
Once you follow Arnulfstr. you end up cycling along the main road with the idiot drivers and traffic light everywhere. A real cycle route should be able to stay among the greenery and go under every bridge that crosses the railway lines all the way out to Laim.
There you will have to cross the road to Nymphenburg. But once there, you're into a big green and pleasant area again.

The Powers That Be have decided that one more stop with "Brücke" in it would overtax the passengers so the new stop will be named "Hirschgarten" instead.
