Am I the only American who has had to take the driving test for a driving license in Frankfurt?

Since I am from California my license is not exchangeable in Germany. During my first trip back to the States, I got a Utah license, which has reciprocity. Unfortunately the dates were noticed and I was told I could not get a license someplace else while I am a resident of Germany. I must take the driving and theory test, but I'm not required to take any lessons since I have driving in the USA for years (and Germany for a year.)

Now my problem is that the driving test is given only through driving schools. I need an English-speaking driving instructor who can take me to the test. I live in Frankfurt Rhine/Main area. I passed the written test in English.

Have any of you ever had to take this driving test? In my search I haven't found any other Americans who have. My bad luck.

It would be very helpful if you could share the name of any English-speaking driving school/instructor you have used or know of.

Eagerly awaiting your reply,
Nora Helmer

Hello Nora,

I will ask some schools if they are able to help you. I will give you a message here when I found someone.

Sincerely

Hi Nora,

I'm from Texas and we also don't have a reciprocal agreement with Germany. You will have two people in the car with you when you take the test- an instructor (from a driving school) and an examinator (from TüV). It might make more sense for you to look for an examinator from TüV that speaks English. That way he or she will be giving you instructions in English. I just recently took the test (in Göttingen which is a 2 hour drive from here) and my examinator didn't speak English but luckily my instructor did-so I knew that if I didn't understand something, he could translate. But my point is- it might make more sense for the examinator to speak English.

Take care and good luck!

I haven't used them, but around the corner from where I live in Bockenheim there is a driving school that reckons it teaches in English. I would assume they will also know how to hook up the test(s) in English.

As I said - no idea what they are like but the number is 069779678.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for your responses.

Ben W - I left a message on the phone number you gave me. If you know the street or intersection, I'll drive by.
Hanna- If I live in Frankfurt am I allowed to take the test in Gottingen? Was it an issue for you? I don't mind the drive if it is a solution.

So I'm still working on this and appreciate any additional ideas or information anyone can offer.

Thank you so much.
Hanna
Hi Nora,
I took the test in Göttingen because that is where I began the entire process (written test and a couple of driving lessons just to make sure I would do ok)-and then I moved to Frankfurt. So the Straßenverkehr in Göttingen already had all my info, and I was familiar with the area, which is why I went back to take the driving test. Technically, I could have taken the driving test in Frankfurt- so I assume you could take it in Göttingen, but you should call the Straßenverkehr in Frankfurt to find out for sure.

However, all you need is one person (preferably the examinator, or just the instructor) who speaks English in the car with you and I'm sure you can find that in Frankfurt.

I know you've said that you've been driving in Germany already for a while, but I would suggest you take one or two "lessons" with an instructor just in case. I also drove here for a year before getting my German drivers license, but I often made mistakes typical of someone who has been driving for a long time already. And some of those mistakes can cost you your license. They're tough here! smile.gif

And just in case...here is the number of my instructor in Göttingen, Tobias Hillman: 0 177 258 6565. He's very nice and also works on Saturdays.

I think the street intersection is Schlossstrasse and Ederstrasse, or it could be Schlossstrasse/Kurürstenstrasse.

Hi, I know, I know, there are tons of driving schools out there, but can anyone recommend one that they've taken lessons from and is good? Is there anything that I should watch out for?

Thanks

Little Britain
You can do it at the German Red Cross training centre at Eschersheimer Landstrasse 328:
German Red Cross FFM

Nearest u-bahn stop on the U1, U2 or U3 is Fritz-Tarnow-Strasse I think.

They do a weekly course every saturday, starts at 9am and goes on till 3-4pm. You need to bring your passport and also 20 EUR cash. Just turn up.
