40000€/Year is 3333/month on a 12-month basis.
On this monthly salary, a married man without children would take home around €2200/month net, AFTER deductions for income tax, solidarity tax, health insurances (8.45%), church tax (9%) and pension (9.75%) and unemployment (3.25%) contributions. The %ages shown are typical. Depending on your religion, or even if you declare it, you might wriggle out of the church tax as most TT heathens do.
Depending on where you decide to live, and the style you like to live in you'll need €1000-1500 for a small apartment, heating, electricity and the like.

1000-1500EUR is a bit too high.
about 60+sqm, central munich, good area can start at 800EUR.

Include nebenkosten, heating and electricity and you'll soon reach €1000, but it depends on your expected standard of living and location...

Thanks for this info.
i would further like to add that i do not expect a very high standard of living. i belive one bedroom flat with separate kitchen would be sufficient for me and wife. i would pefer public transport than a car to move around since i heard that munich has good public transport system. office of my company is located at
Westendstr., Munich and i do not mind travelling 3 hours daily (to and fro) for office. i m a vegetarian and plan to cook my food.
would like to know if i can lead a type of life mentioned above with Euro 2200/month in hand.

Even if you choose to live on the outskirts of Munich as far away as possible from where your office is located, I think it highly unlikely
that you will need an hour and a half each way.
To get an idea of the times and distances involved, use the
MVV (public transport) map on top of the screen: make up a few itineraries
from various points of the network, the duration of the trip will be displayed automatically.

Yes. And still have plenty of money left over to pay for the advice we are giving you
@YL6
Do you think this one will actually say "thank you" for any of it?

No need to say "thank you" if he pays...

I think you can certainly lead a decent life with 2200/month, quite a few people live on less. Most of your money will go towards accommodation, bills, food and transport, and there will be a moderate amount left over.
You won't be a millionaire, but it's still a reasonable salary and most people don't have much left out of their paycheck after everything is paid anyway.
If you could get your employer to pay for temporary accommodation for the first month or two, it will give you time to look carefully for an apartment that's not too expensive but in a suitable location. Rent and bills will be your biggest expense so you might as well get the cheapest possible place that you like. You don't want to be wasting time and money moving every few months. Also, if you go for a central location, you won't pay so much on public transport (which is excellent).
Oh yeah, this website is an excellent source of information and second-hand furniture for sale that will save you loads of money and time before and during your time in Munich.

Ahem. And a married woman?
How about, the income earner in the more adventageous tax bracket (3).

Eiither one of a married (or partnered) pair can take Tax Class 3. The other partner, if earning, gets class 5 and pays tax from the first cent.

Or you go for "splitting" - each is in tax class 4.
At the end of the year it's all thrown together anyway.

I thought this only applied if you were married? What on earth does partnered mean? I lived with my ex boyf and we didn't have that option. Mind you was 4 years ago. We were both Steuerklasse 1

yeah only applies for married. Only the other way round is ok. Like so you out of job living with partner (not married): your fault therefore less money.

I would like to know a reference range for salary negotiations. I was thinking of something about 52k p.a. But I would like to know the opinions of others. I have an MSc., and 9+ years of experience in IT.
