Boston, Ma: Governor Romney just announced he's not seeking re-election for the Governor's seat. This goes along way to supporting the rumours that he'll be making a bid for the republican nomination. More news here.

We can only hope that he loses and I`m sure the American people will be heartily sick of Republicans by then. I quite like Hillary my-self (wonder if she`ll have a few well built, young staffers or "stiffers" running round the Oval Office). blink.gif

If John McCain wants to run in the next election, he will be president.

You've got to be f'ng kidding me. Usually I avoid politics (so will be unchecking the "email" box shortly), but damn... I couldn't imagine Hillary being president. I hope most other Americans also would not want to imagine it. [shudders uncontrollably]

I still have a strange hope that Arnold manages to get the law changed so he could run for president. Not that I think he'd win (or that I'd want him to), but the only election slogan more catchy than "I will governate you California!" seems to be "I will presidate over you, America. Then, after 4 years, I'll be back for more."

There are plenty of quality Republicans, 'course most non Americans think Republican = Bush thus Republican = Bad. That's hardly the case.

Anybody that votes exclusively down party lines is a Silly McSillyson.

Oh, and Hilllary is awful.
sea-king
"Anybody that votes exclusively down party lines is a Silly McSillyson."

I then take that as read that most Americans are "Silly McSillyson."?
As far as I can see it voting on party lines is what Ami`s do isn`t it? ( Apart from people who are looking for Mr Clean-America/or Mrs Clean-America, who doesn`t exist, Pres Clinton springs to mind in this context.) blink.gif
interplanetjanet
Voting down party lines is hardly an American thing. That said, it's a lot easier to do in the States, because voting for any other party than the big two can often amount to just throwing away your vote. I say we go to a preference system.

Why?

Let`s be honest, you can only vote between Democrat or Republican, I mean who else can you vote for, Ross Dried-Up-Man or whatever he was called? I believe that the average American is becoming more and more political sensible (especially in the last couple of years) least I hope so, and I hope that they get rid of George and his pack of Goons ASP. (I know,I know, next time I get off the fucking plane at Dulles I`m off to the FBI for a little talk or two at the J.Edgar Hoover Building (who enjoyed wearing womens clothes!Maybe they`ll let me off if I dress for the ocassion) for saying things like this.)But then I drink anything. blink.gif
papa_geno
What Jules said.

I'm thinking my vote goes to the Penn/Teller ticket, but there's plenty of time left to persuade me otherwise.
persimmon
Here comes Jeb! I think I am going to throw up now.
yossarian
It seems that G-dub is biding his time so he can high tail it out of office and not deal with the post-Iraq disaster. If I was on the advisory staff for the Dems, I would recommend they put up a patsy and leave the next 4 years to the Elephants to try and clean up their own mess.

I agree that McCain could win and Hillary would have no chance. Personally, I would recommend Obama run. Experience, you say? What, he needs to become a drunk, coke-addicted failed business man before he can become president? I say run now before his Senate record comes back to haunt him. Even if he loses, he will get "experience."

I say screw party lines...I just want a smart person running the country!

jml for President!!!
Katrina
I'd get a Green Card and citizenship just to vote for that!
eurovol
McCain will no longer get my vote under any circumstances. As for Hillary, I would vote for her just to piss off the Republicans.
I would look at Feingold, Hagel, Obama, Boxer, Edwards, Bayh and Richardson and about in that order. I too hope Obama takes a serious look before too long. The guy is a natural.

I will not vote for Kerry, Clark, Jeb or any current Republican Senator and that includes Lieberman. biggrin.gif
Ketchup
@Eurovol

In reading that, one might be tempted to think that you'd at least consider voting something other than Democrat. Or did I misunderstand you Mr. McSillyson? wink.gif
winglette
Huge Obama fan myself. Think he'd be an excellent choice for VP in '08.

BTW, I have his book 'Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance' if anyone wants to borrow it.

No, I don't vote straight ticket unless that is what is called for by the inclusion of rotten Republican candidates. In the last few elections, that has actually been the case in my voting district. Prior to the Contract on America, I have and hope to again vote for the best qualified no matter what. I like Chuck Hagel and would consider voting for him were my fellow Democrats stupid enough to put up another Kerry.
Ketchup
Fair enough. I was just a bit surprised since most of your posts are, well, let's say...not Republican friendly. wink.gif
Bumpy
The next Presidential candidate must have the following qualifications:

Mustn't be a:
Clinton
Kennedy
Bush
Gore

Or any of those "families."

A modern form of aristocracy running politics I find abhorrent and contrary to the interests of the country.
fletch
I must say I do love reading all of the opinions from people that cannot even participate in US elections.

I sometimes wonder if they are as interested and opinionated in their own politics as they are of ours...

By no means am I saying that they are or not, but just that I see much more discussion about US politics then I do Scottish per say.
Hutcho
I don't know if I would class the Clintons in that "aristocracy".

That is because the Republicans ain't been friendly since Haley "Barbourism" took over the modus operandi in 1988. dry.gif

I am a big fan of Mitt Romney. But the whole Mormon thing may get in his way.

Good idea jml.

Here is the draft pool

man you forgot jesse jackson, al sharpton and ralph nader. dry.gif

Man, a race between Rodham-Clinton and Rice would be this pervert's wet dream.

Like the smack-down at the beginning of Kill Bill. It'd rock. Don't see it happening, though. Just too much pleasure to be taken from it for it to ever come true.
perdido
The most important option list there is and no "none of the above" option.
yossarian
I would even consider voting McCain, but don't think he has been looking too healthy lately.

Hillary and Condi are each brilliant people in their own right, but each have the electable qualities of bellybutton lint.

Obama is brilliant, eloquent, un-flappable, and yet to be tarnished by "his esteemed colleagues" in the Senate. Needs a strong Southern running mate, but the Democratic party seems to weaken in candidates south of Minneapolis.

If Jeb Bush is even in the primaries, I may consider plans to stay in Europe long term. Then I would immediately invest in a "trick" US Flag Company that produces American flags that ignite, but cannot be blown out. Laughs for the whole family.
jml
Well spotted Yossarian, dont know whats been wrong with McCain but he's not looking healthy at all. Jeb Bush has said he wouldn't run. He's got a damn lot more experience than his brother had going in, but he's supposedly also the religious conservative one of the Bush family. Scary blink.gif
mere
no jeb!! yuck!
too bad McCain isn't doing better. i think it'd be interesting (never happen- i know, never say never) if some people broke party lines and ran together- like... Mccain/Feingold
yossarian
McCain might look a little swollen due to the fact GW has had his hand up his Aßß like a puppet since he now "supports" the no torture push.

I would vote right now for Gore/Kerry...to not set foot within 2 states of the Democratic party for the next 3 years mad.gif I've seen more charisma from animatronic bears at Showbiz Pizza Place.
mere
okay so this doesn't have anything to do w/ this thread, but Bush accepts Sen Mccain's torture policy (figured since Mccain was mentioned...)

I think CNN.com has started using Toytown as inspiration for their own polls/articles. dry.gif

Now two Democrat party officials has announced that former North Carolina Senator John Edwards is set to run for the White House in 2008. He'll officially make the bid himself sometime soon. We should set up a poll like Barack Obama's. I like Edwards a lot. He's my first choice - with maybe Obama as running mate.

Related topic: Barack Obama - possible candidate
PES
Or the other way around? An Obama - Edwards ticket?
FuzzyTony
Well, Senator Evan Bayh has decided against running. As much as I like the guy I don't think he stood a chance in the run for the WH. Perhaps a cabinet postion?

Or maybe he got feed up with the way the country is going and started reading this:

DoubleVision
Oh! This is great news: Revealed: Rudy's '08 Battle Plans

QUOTE (NY Daily)
It's clearly laid out in 140 pages of printed text, handwriting and spreadsheets: The top-secret plan for Rudy Giuliani's bid for the White House. The remarkably detailed dossier sets out the budgets, schedules and fund-raising plans that will underpin the former New York mayor's presidential campaign - as well as his aides' worries that personal and political baggage could scuttle his run. At the center of his efforts: a massive fund-raising push to bring in at least $100 million this year, with a scramble for at least $25 million in the next three months alone. The loss of the battle plan is a remarkable breach in the high-stakes game of presidential politics and a potentially disastrous blunder for Giuliani in the early stages of his campaign.

It would be better this happened to Romney, McCain or Brownback, but at least one blue candidate for the 2008 presidency might drop out.

mcapachey
I think that Hilary Clinton will be the Democratic star and might be the next President...is America ready for a female President ?
Jenny L
I think the US is ready for a female president, but are they ready for that particular female? unsure.gif
cinzia
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Don't you people realize that the reason nobody votes in America is because they are well SICK of the elections 6 months before they even happen???

We might as well discuss who will win Superbowl 2008. I'm betting on the Vikings.
Keydeck
Here's my favourite candidate.

Walken 2008

QUOTE
"I am a huge supporter of the military. I have always thought of them as our guardians, and when our guardians are making less than the poverty line, and children are suffering because their parents decided to join the military, well, I get very upset. I feel that instead of sending billions to the Pentagon's pet projects, it should go to the troops."
