I would recommend going to the Olympic Park on New Year's Eve. Take a few fireworks with you and a bit of booze. Go to the top of the hill and at the stroke of midnight you can see fireworks being set off all over Munich. I did it last year and was one of the most amazing sights I have seen!

Go to a place, any place, off
Leopoldstraße and bring your own fireworks. The street is blocked off for the fireworks shortly before midnight. Tell the waiter/waitress you'll be coming back but pay up anyway, then go out and light your crackers.

We went to Tollwood the last couple of years. You pay a entrance fee about €15. Different bands play in the tents. You can also drink in one of the bars outside if it gets too hot inside. You can see the fireworks safely from inside the festival fence without kids throwing crackers in your face.

Unlike in the UK, everyone pretty much does their own firework display here. Not quite on the same scale as in Holland, where you think the Germans are attacking again and the Dutch are putting up of a helluva fight for a change, but fairly impressive nevertheless. Main coglomerations of pyromaniacs I know of is
Leopoldstrasse, Theresienwiese, Donnersbergerbrücke and
Olympiapark. I believe there was a proper firework display at the latter last year. Either way, there's nothing on the same scale as Hogmanay here. No massive street parties. Lots of private parties and then everyone emerges at midnight...

According to the Munich City webpage the following places will be having Firework displays or be where people set'em off:
MarienplatzLeopoldstraßeFriedensengel
Olympiaberg
Monopteros (im Englischen Garten)
I'm guessing Olympiaberg is going to be the best place to see stuff.

Marienplatz is a nightmare for people hurling fireworks about. It's good fun though.

It's been suggested to me by a colleague that the Friedensengel near to Luitpoldbruecke is a great place to watch fireworks over the city while singing Auld Lange Syne and drinking wine.
I'm thinking dinner at a friend's place - as all restaurants are both expensive and full that night. Followed by the Feuerzangebowle at Isartor. Then walk over to this Golden angel place. Is this a good idea?
And after countdown, I could try walking back to Isartor for a final Feuerzangebowle - it's open till 1am.
What time do the fireworks normally start and what time do they end?
Thanks in advance. This is my first Silvester in Europe.

The fireworks typically start in earnest at midnight, but there'll probably be a few spatterings here and there earlier on.
Once they start, they normally last about an hour or so, I think.
I've heard from other people that the Friedensengel is a good place, so it's probably a good plan.

Thanks laura. The world needs more happy cheery optimistic people like you.

Your photos are great. Do post more. I was too busy lighting fireworks and drinking to take photos properly.
