Hi all,

I'm an German expat myself, I've lived in London for about five years and now moved to the coast for over one year (Broadstairs).

I know the struggle with a foreign language, even though English is much easier than German.

Since my wife isn't German and being a programmer I've put together a website where she can drill words. Anybody else is also welcome to use it for free.

The website is still in its infancy but you might consider it useful. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Thanks for the great website delpino, it's really proffessionally done!

My husband and I have been using it for the last couple of weeks and we can reccomend it as a really fun and effective way to drill vocabulary.

It's got some really nice features. For each word, you get the definition, the number of times you've seen it before and some other stuff, sometimes including an example of how it's used in a sentence (that can help a lot!). You can also play an audio clip of the word. You then rate the word as to how well you know it on a 1-5 scale. Words you know better come up less often. You can also tell it to stop showing you certain words so you don't get the really easy ones coming up all the time. Then if you want to review what you know (or should know) you can browse the list of words that you've seen. There are probably other things you can do with it as well but I havn't explored it all yet. It's nicely laid out and easy to use.

Obviously this isn't meant to teach you German from start to finish - it won't replace proper lessons - but it certainly helps expand your vocabulary, which is one of my main problems at the moment. And in a geeky way, it really is fun!

Thanks! I'll definitely check it out. Cheers...jml

Going to check it out too. Anything would help at this point!!

Glad you like it .. By the way I've added an email reminder, because I think the problem is that some people log in a couple of times but then get lazy or forget. Anyway if you have suggestions on how to improve the site let me know.

Thanks, Delphino. That's a great site you've put together. I have it up in a tab in my browser and work through some words whenever I get a few free minutes. What I'm finding really useful is that there are loads of words, some really basic ones, I know the meaning of, but I'm realising that I have absolutely no idea of their gender in German, so I keep them active.

The only thing I could think of to improve the site would be a test of your active words to check whether whether you actually know them or not.

I've also added sentences to listen to. This should be useful to learn how to form complete sentences.

I'm just annoyed that apparently I got deleted from the site because of T-com's laziness. I'll have to re-register *sigh*

I haven't seen the site for a while...but great site.

T-com? Telecom? I haven't deleted any user for a long time.

Once you get to a certain level, you might like to listen to our new podcast: German Words Explained.

We are going to take a word each week that is a part of everyday life in Germany, but so complex that it is not taught in schools when you learn German. Today we start with "Einwohnermeldeamt".

Comments are welcome!

I'd just like to add that this really is a great website. It's helping me tonnes with my vocabulary.

Well done to all involved!

Just wanted to add that we've a nice logo now and a new "loop function" to drill German even more efficient. Hope you like it. smile.gif

I know most people on this site speak German, but for those who don't I wanted to let you know that you are not alone! I don't but I would love to and I have been teaching myself online on a site, German Flashcards. This site is really amazing; it gives you a free 3 day trial of the upgraded account the trail is over you would need to upgrade to get the audio part but it's really cheap and I am please with it because I have searched on other sites and no where give me accurate translations like German Flash cards. My friend who is German is impressed with me as we were in the city the other day and went into a German coffee shop and I managed to order her coffee and sandwich completely in German and I have only been on the site three days. Basically the site consists of sentences and words and you can loop them to your flexibility The explanations are very easy to understand and the audio part is great because you can replay it as much as you want until you feel you can repeat what the audio says perfect. Try it out and let me know what you think. I think it's great! I can introduce myself and say a few more things then I could have before. It's great! No reason not to try and besides it looks good on your cv wink.gif

They're advertisers on this site too. Glad to hear the system works.
