We're moving to Feldkirchen from Munich... can anyone recommend English-speaking midwives, pediatricians, or family practice doctors there?

My husband and I live in Feldkirchen and use Michael Rinecker at Münchenerstr. 12 (tel: 903 22 28) as our GP. We both find him fine, and he speaks fluent English (I think his mother may be American). You sometimes have to wait a couple of days for an appointment for non-pressing matters, but if the matter is urgent you can generally just turn up and wait for a gap in the schedule. It's best to ring in advance though. I haven't found the receptionist(s) particularly friendly and can't say whether they speak English or not. I would be surprised if they don't at least have enough English to understand that you want an appointment though.

The paediatrician who cares for our daughter of 15 months is Dr. Schühbock (tel: 904 30 40). He is based in Heimstetten. You sometimes hear his practice referred to as that of Dr. Reinniger, although Reinniger retired last year and Schühbock now works together with someone else (whose name escapes me at the moment). Schühbock speaks English, and I seem to remember that his partner also does. Again, I'm not sure about the reception staff, but I've heard lots of English voices around so I would be surprised if not. The right doctor for your child is obviously a very personal choice, but I am happy with Schühbock. He certainly seems to know his stuff, and I find him a good mix of caring but practical and, whilst he is often busy, I've never found him impatient. We once even had to 'phone him on his mobile at midnight on a Saturday night due to an emergency and he was in no way put out or short with us about the unsocial hour. If you are interested in e.g. homeopathic medicine then he may not be the choice for you, but don't quote me on that as it's not something I have explored with him.

When our daughter was born, I used Petra Weber (tel: 903 57 30) from Feldkirchen as my midwife. Frau Weber only works as a midwife in the afternoons (in the mornings she has a job (I think) in an home for the elderly). I didn't "warm" to her personally but she did her job well, e.g., she gave us (first-time parents!) a number of good tips on how to handle the baby confidently and securely and when I suffered badly with cracked nipples, she came up with suggestion after suggestion for things to try that might help. All that said, however, I don't think she speaks any English, and she also does not run a post-natal course ("Rückbilding").

Hope this helps.

Your reply is incredibly helpful, thank you so much! Our son is 13 months old and we have to find a new pediatrician for him because his current one works in western Munich and it's just too far to go with a sick child (hopefully won't happen too often, but they do get ill sometimes). I will definitely contact your suggestion.

It's funny what you say about your midwife - I felt the same way about the one I had here in Munich. I never warmed up to her. I think I must have expected her to be very warm because of the line of work, but she was always extremely formal. Perhaps it is the midwife culture here?

I very much look forward to moving to Feldkirchen - it's a bit busy here in Munich, and in Feldkirchen we get a garden and some relative silence! biggrin.gif
