Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with changing a visa? I have heard it can't be done. I have an Au pair visa and need to change to a working holiday visa.My current visa doesn't expire until september.

And for those of you who are going to tell me to go to the KVR and ask, who do I go to talk to there?

Any advice or past experiences would be very much appreciated

Get a native speaker of German (or someone fluent in German) to accompany you to the KVR. When you first go in there, try some basic questions or sentences in German yourself before asking anyone if they speak English ... if they see you struggling with German and they are in a particularly benevolent mood, they may switch to English automatically. If they don't, well, then you have your German speaking friend to help you.

Normally you need to be in NZ to change your visa to a working holiday one. I spoke with the German embassy in NZ a lot about this, they were insistant that the applicant be in NZ at time of applying. After a shitload of phone calls and conversations I discovered that they only cared that the passport was sent FROM NZ and would be returned to an address in NZ. So, the upshot is, it is possible. You can download the required forms online, post your passport back to NZ to a family member, get them to send it to the German Embassy in Wellington with their address as the return address. Everything should be hunky dory. I'd give the KVR a go first, but I have a feeling that they'll tell you to fuck off. It's too much work for them to arrange this for you.

We also tried to get the NZ working holiday from Germany last year but the Auslanderamt here in Freising had never heard of it and weren't particularly keen to discuss it - they are the authority and we but mere migrants. Since we were already going back to NZ for a holiday we picked it up from the German embassy in NZ without problems. Good luck for getting it here in Germany!

KVR speak english? yep they do, well at least for me they did. Im pretty sure they treat certain ethnic backgrounds with some sort of bias process. They told me as a aussie im givin a quicker and higher chance of having my visa application done.

I got my working holiday visa transfered to a one year working visa all by speaking in english.

They also remembered me when i came back the next week.

good luck
