Hi,

does anyone know what the shopping hours will be over Christmas - December 23rd to 26th, 2006?

What days will the supermarkets be closed?

I need to figure out what day to start stocking up!

Thanks!
Mariposa
All stores will be closed from the 24th to the 26th.
23rd is a normal Saturday.
Usually stores open until 1300 or 1400 on the 24th, but since it is a Sunday, they are closed all day.
And stores at train stations and gas stations may/will still be open.

I'd stock up today, since I would expect everyone else to do it on Saturday, and I wouldn't wanna be stuck in a grocery store for hours.

I went yesterday to stock up on things if that gives you a clue of what it will be like this afternoon and tomorrow!

23rd is a normal day but expect a MASSIVE crush!

In Bavaria at least, shops are ALLOWED to be open on Sunday 24th, BUT most of the department stores will NOT be opening and I doubt many others will either.

25th and 26th are public holidays so the shops will be CLOSED.

27th, back to normal.

Expect the shops to be CLOSED 31st December, they WILL be closed 1st January.

NB: In Bavaria, the shops will also be CLOSED on Saturday 6th January.

On Dec. 31, most shops are open in the morning, usually until 1 or 2 pm.

I didn't realize that shops can open on Dec. 24, if it falls on a Sunday. Are you sure, MT? unsure.gif

Tom A, in BAVARIA, if Xmas Eve is a Sunday, shops are ALLOWED to open. But most won't.
Was in the SZ a couple of weeks ago.

Apparently, this only applies to grocers, flower shops, christmas tree and newspaper vendors, and for a maximum of three hours before 2 pm:

I did a shop this morning and had to wait 5 mins for a trolley before heading into the crush. I'm staying home now for at least two weeks...

So did I this morning. Had to wait outside for a trolley as there were none at all available. A lot of pushing and shoving going on inside. Glad it's behind me and I'm not going back even if I have forgotten anything. Don't you just love Christmas.

I had a "clever" idea for some Xmas shopping this year, and bought some things online.

Now, some of the things haven't arrived (three weeks later in some cases) and as I fly out on Tues will probably have to buy some new stuff - whiole others have been delivered to the post office, where I have to stand in line to get them.

New brainstorming required for next year rolleyes.gif

I didn't realise shops actually opened here in Germany except on saturdays. They're always shut when I get out of work

I went shopping last night, this morning and today midday. I knew that it will be packed starting this afternoon. I am not going back either... Yeah I love Xmas. blink.gif

Last Saturday was bad enough, the town centre just before Christmas is a must to avoid! Luckily we´ve got all the shops we need round the corner, we don´t have to join the crush. My wife braved the crowds today though, the queues in Saturn were particularly long.

Have them shipped to the recipients or to the destination where you will be. Doh too late. tongue.gif

I was at the local REWE market and bought about 14 bottles of water which I think will last me until Wednesday morning and I noticed a sign on the shelf where the bottles were standing: "Dear Customers, we don't have any more water in stock, we apologize for any inconvenience"
I mean it's pretty poor service considering that they don't have enough water for all customers, everyone knows that people shop a lot around Xmas time.
MonksTown
People panic buy LiaB. It happens EVERYWHERE over public holidays.

Want water? Turn on the friggin tap! cool.gif
sarabyrd
MonksTown, my darling, she lives in FFM. They do not have the superb water quality that Munich and its surroundings enjoy.
Lifeisabuffet
Sara you are so right, there is so much lime in the water in FFM that the washed dishes always have stains from that. I have to clean the sinks and the bathroom like twice a week cause the lime just builds up everywhere. Just imagine drinking that water... I tried drinking tap water a couple of time and it gives you a very uncomfortable feeling in the stomach.

I went shopping this morning just before lunch time and found it exceptionally quiet.

No queues, no rush, no crush, no shortages of anything ... perfect!
(I was very pleasantly surprised!)

In was in Perfekt-Luxuriös-Überschnicky-Schickeria; OK, PLUS at 7:30 tonight. They still had their good fresh sausages. cool.gif

Hi,
Reusing this thread for 2007...

Does anyone know if shops will generally be open this 24th (Mon) and/or 26th (Wed)?
kathie
They will most likely be open on Monday morning, although things will start to close around lunchtime - check individual stores. Wednesday is a holiday, so everything will be closed then.
davo
Cheers Kathie.
I was out and checked at a couple of places which said they'd be open 'til 14.00 on Monday. Didn't ask about Wednesday, but good to know now they'll be closed.
Carm
everything shop wise is closed on the 26th also.
sarabyrd
Except possibly bakeries and such that open from 8 til 11am on Sundays. But no guarantee.
