This is the seven-day mountain biking race from Oberstdorf, Germany to Gardasee, Italy, right?
Which race are you doing, the one in July (15th - 22nd) or the one in September (9th - 16th)?
And do you have a link to the official website?
Here's the German Wikipedia article:
Transalp (Alpenüberquerung)

You're nuts! Are you really doing this as a race? We are planning to do it with another couple maybe this September (time to get going on the trainer) but just for fun!!
Good luck! Don't kill yourself.

it is a race and yes I and my riding partner are nuts.
for the next 2 months, I will be attached to my bike on the roller in my living room 2 hours every other day, at a pace to keep my heart rate between 65 and 75% my maximal heart rate which was 205 last summer ( I am 41 and 95kg)

Enjoy the pain man! Saw it was advertised but didn't bother entering.
The T.A. is quite easy, isn't it, because all your gear gets carried to your overnight stop;-)

Sekt,
For the TA, if your gear is getting ferried for you then you may be better with a hard tail. They're lighter, climb better and less to go wrong. Some fine Titanium steed for example

Nobody rides this race with their gear.

I normally ride a hardtail, but I an not a featherweight at 90 + kg. I am not fat, but big and for 7 straight days, a fully is going to be better. I don´t care to be the first up the hill, even if I wanted to it would happen. My goal is to finish in the middle of the pack.
The liteville frame climbs almost as good as a hardtail for me.
I will also ride the following marathons in 2007:
Gardasee
Garmisch
Tegernsee
Pfronten
all as training for the TransAlp

well six days until the adventure starts. I have more than 5000km in die Beine and damn if I am not ready.
After all the training this year, I have managed to morph my heart into a "Sportler Herz", big and burly pumping machine.
I also managed to get my weight down to 78 Kg (from 97!)
and I will be doing it on a hardtail.
you can follow our race on www.teamgumption.blogspot.com
Wish us luck!
