Hey would anyone want to do something Monday night? My boyfriend has to work late and if it's not that cold I thought it would be cool to go out for a drink. I think the date is the 18th.
Okay let me know if anyone is interested.

Ok, I can go out for a drink.

It depends on what kind of drink you mean - you talk about being worried about the cold - do you mean you'd like to walk around the Christmas Market and get a drink there? Or do you want to go to a café or bar?
ChiTown
Dec 8 2006, 1:29 am
We could get coffee at a cafe or walk around the Christmas market or go to a bar and drink beer or do all three. My boyfriend is worried about leaving me at home. I'd rather hang out with y'all than go to a military course on manners. Not that it wouldn't be interesting, but I'm pretty sure they're all going to be speaking German and I have a feeling that I'd stick out a bit in that crowd.
Right now it's like 10 degrees outside but my boyfriend just told me it's mild in Dresden so forget I mentioned the weather.

Ok, well, count me in as well for the 18th. We'll save you from the military course on manners and ease your boyfriend's mind that you won't be sitting home alone.

Would you all like to meet at the Christmas market or should I just text each of you?
malikos
Dec 11 2006, 8:57 am
The Christmas market is packed all the time, i think due to the huge crowds it will be difficult
to meet there. I won´t have a clue who to look for.
We could meet at a Tram stataion like Postplatz, which is near the market, but away from the crowds.
Say the side where the number 11 and No 8 arrive. Then we could walk to the marrket.
What do everyone think ???
Bonocom
Dec 11 2006, 11:15 am
Postplatz is fine. Perhaps a few of us should exchange numbers as well. My number is 0172 790 7837.
malikos
Dec 11 2006, 1:25 pm
I would exchange numbers but i would have sent a private email, i wouldn´t have put it in full
view of everyone, you don´t know which whacko has just taken your phone number down. About
a couple of a thousand people now know your phone number. Have you completely lost the plot.

Do any of you nice people know if there is a place that sells English books in Dresden? Also I am trying to get a text on German 101 but the ones that they at my school are over $100.

I think we should meet at 19.00.
ChiTown
Dec 12 2006, 8:17 pm
It took my boyfriend half a day to teach me how to count to ten and I have a terribly thick accent when I do attempt to speak German. That's why I thought I'd just get a text from school. All of our FL texts are really good, but damn, for that much I could take a German language class at community college.
Okay, anyway, so 19:00 is like 7:00? That works for me, how about everyone else? Is 19:00 a good time to meet?
malikos
Dec 13 2006, 10:25 am
Ok 19.00 at the Postplatz tram station.
For Chi, 7.00 at the Postplatz Tram Station.

Perfect I´m glad I found this site. If anyone wants to get a drink or shoot some pool let me know. I live in the Neustadt and am usually down for anything. I think I piss my girlfriend off cause she has to study and I don´t do much. She´s gone to Dubai for the holidays so I´m just hanging by myself. Also if anyone could inform me on any gyms or Brazilian Ju Jitsu clubs that would be awsome. Hope to hear from at least someone. I think I would feel like a complete nerd if not. HaHa

I think it is absolutely pathetic that the meetup was cancelled at the last minute. I cancelled going to the gym so i could meet up with you lot now i have to go back to my flat and get my gym stuff. Typical Americans, and its little wonder that the rest of the world hates you.

Dec 18 2006, 6:53 pm
You've been making a valiant effort to get people together, malikos! Shame it hasn't quite worked out yet. I think your outburst at the Americans is a little harsh though, that's no way to make friends.
So what happened exactly? As far as I can tell it was you, ChiTown, Roboticus, and Bonocom due to meet. Who cancelled? All four? And what about the
originally suggested meetup for this coming Wednesday? Is that still on?
Anyway, nevermind. It's getting close to Christmas now and many people will be leaving Germany for the holidays. Perhaps there will be more people around in the new year. And besides, as you know, this here TT website is very new to Dresden (only started this summer) so it is still just picking up. There seem to currently be
about twelve people around, with one or two newcomers joining each week, so the numbers are slowly growing. Hopefully a meetup will actually get off the ground soon enough.

First off, Welcome back to Dresden ChiTown! Sorry I couldn't come out to meet you on your first night back, but sometimes unexpected circumstances arise to which we have to react, having silly things like families, business ventures and general adult responsibilities to attend to - oh to be able to while away the days drinking beer or sitting around, looking out the window dreaming of drinking beer - what unavailing frivalty.
Second, I hope everyone can come to the Semper Oper wednesday - if anyone of cannot make it for whatever the reason, we should keep trying as the people I've meet so far have proven to be worth the effort.
And Third, with regards to our mutable nature as "Americans": right, wrong or indifferent, we are a mercurial, adaptable society and as such are taught to be flexible and adaptable in order to deal with the changes and obstacles that come with going places and doing things that no one has done before. Who can deny that we ahve done more in the last 200 years than most have in the last 2000 - not the least of which was sacrificing much of our blood for THIS continent's sake, not once but twice. There is a tiny island just east of here that would be speaking German if not for us oh-so-hated "Americans" - this breeds obvious jealously and contempt. So be it. The nice thing about America is that if you don't like it, you can change it or you can leave it or you can bitch about it - and you can always come back.
We as Americans are certainly filled with faults but show me one country that doesn't.
Whatever, let's just get as many people together (hopefully on a weekly basis) and enjoy the area and the company.

Wow, now Editor Bob is involved. Don´t worry, its all under control, i had the eveing to chill out and put everything into perspective.

I actually wrote a reply but Editor Bob censored it as it was not in the best interest of this forum,
so i will tone down my replies, before Editor Bob removes me from this Forum. I will not be attending on Wednesday as it does seem the case that no one in Dresden is interesting or willing to meet up. Rather than
face the dissapointment of no one turning up i will head into the Neustadt and get drunk with some Erasmus students.
Now this will be last post in this section of the forum, i will now be joining the Munich and Berlin lot to see
if they are willing to come to Dresden and have some parties.
I hope you all have a good party on Wednesday.

Well it looks as if the meeting at the Semper Oper is off now. However, Wednesday is the last night of the Medieval Market in the Stalhof. I think Friday night is the last night of the Striezel Markt as well.
Teddy (Chicagogo) & I will probably be meeting there if you guys would like to meet up with us - anyone is welcome.
Let us know.
Cheers,

Hi Straker,
Welcome to Dresden. I have tried to organise a few meet ups but there was not a lot of interest so i sort of gave up
and didn´t post for a while. I am interested in meeting up, I don´t know how much of a football fan you are,
but i will be going to the shamrock (Irish bar in the Altstadt) on Sunday to watch the Arsenal Vs Man Utd match.
This also goes for anyone else who is interested to watch the Arsenal-Man Utd match this Sunday.
Bonocom and Chicagogo, please answer if you fancy watching the football this Sunday. I guess you 2 will are still excited about the
prospect of David Beckham coming to the states.

I am back in Dresden!! Greetings to all and I hope you had a great Christmas/New Year's!!
From the looks of this forum, I didn't miss too much (I got a pretty strong vibe of animosity from some of the recent postings. What's up with that? Don't make me try a pathetic attempt at online-group-therapy-humor, because it probably won't be funny.) but I'm eager to make some friends in Dresden. (And would like to know a few people who aren't related to my fiancée, you know how that is.)
Until I'm employed, I have tons of free time during the day, but less money that is necessary for a lot of the drinking/partying suggested here. I have a year pass to the city's art collections (€20, good for all the art, except for the Historisches Grünes Gewolbe) and would be positively thrilled to explore the city with someone. Any photography buffs out there? What about authors? Avid readers? Anybody with a pulse?

I guess I don't know when everyone here is free. But, for me, during the day is better than at the evening. (I'm a pretty decent housewife at the moment, but wouldn't mind a little daytime diversion.) And as for how to do this? I have no idea.
Anyway, I'm certainly game. Is there a time that works for you?

Then I'd be up for a beer some evening. I'd rather it be an evening early in the week Mon-Wed as the end of the week and the weekend I usually already have plans. Besides, if you guys can tolerate me, those would be the best days for a recurring 'pint' (sounds funny in my American ears.) I think if the three of us can agree on a day, that's a good start.
I'm also not big into sports, so that wouldn't be a problem for me.

Malikos: If you can give some sort of directions to The Shamrock (preferably from the nearest DVB Haltestelle) I'll plan on being there.
Cooljules: Dresden is a beautiful city and I think it offers a lot to do, though I'm not as up on the party scene as maybe some of the others. I know there are parties constantly, but I think you might need some decent German to have much fun there (the people I know who party are pretty weak in English) and don't ask me how to find them. I love the architecture, the museums, the river, the Wiese (gigantic park, to get out and enjoy some greenery, close to almost everything) and the fact that the local transportation is great. (My perspective.)
And, Dresden could, in my opinion, offer more jobs, and more in English. Though as attractive a city (I think) it'll never offer the English-speaking tourist anything close to what Berlin offers. People here tend to be friendly, "once you get to know them." But, in spite of great German skills, getting to know them is (like in the rest of Germany) often difficult.
At least, that's my take.

sorry business dinner tonight.
Dresden is great. Cheap I mean really cheap for you apartment. They have a large technology job center. Of course speaking german is helpful, after all we are in germany. I find really that everyone or lets say a lot of people speak english, my german is very bad, but they are shy cause it is not very good. still if you bust out some funny german they loosen up a bit about it. Finding partys i think the bars and discos in neustadt are often full. or at least busy. Flower power is still here but i have less fun that five years ago.

I'm sorry I'm meeting a friend I haven't seen for a while today. But next time I'll hopefully make it. Dresden is beauitful and it is getting a lot more international which is great. Of course there isn't a big english speaking crowd yet but I believe it takes a while because a lot of people are still "scared" to go to the east as they don''t speak German well. In fact I know a couple of people who "survived" here even though their German was quite bad...
