Cheap accommodation and friendly pubs in Dresden - Germany

I have a chance for a long weekend in Dresden in Feb. Taking a glimps into my GGFathers roots. Would like to meet some people in their 30s and 40s and get a feeling for the region.
Could anybody recomend hotel/hostel with English speakers and a comfortable pub to chill?
Is local transportation to Pirna/Graupa difficult for someone with weak German skills?

pubs in neutadt are everywhere beer is normally cheap. Try one and then look for a new one if you dont find it your style.
