TEX MEX NIGHT?!?!! Whats that place that claims to be Bavarian Texan...better yet...Anyone up for a DIY...I'll bring the Salsa. cool.gif
DrivinWest
jml, butterbean and I have been talking about that for a while. I'm talking homemade tortillas and everything - LET'S DO IT.
interplanetjanet
Ooh! I'll make it to that! Just say when...

@TexasTornado

Gotta have some REAL tacos...the kind with just slices of beef, tomato and cilantro wrapped in a corn tortilla (mmmm...JalepeƱos on Pacific & Laurel...good, cheap student food).

So when's this restaurant due to open? I'll be there with bells on!
jml
@DW. BRING IT! To quote the immortal A-Team, "I love it when a plan comes together". Seriously lets do a DIY Tex Mex Night: who, where, when - next weekend- if not sooner- gets my vote!

Dont know about the home made tortillas - sounds great but can anyone roll so many?!?! Mine came out like frisbees. I'll stick with the salsa making...
butterbean
not even 9 am and here I am drooling for mexican food! (breakfast burrito anyone? ok, maybe not so mex).

Tex Mex night! Clearly we must do it and soon before we lose our minds. I'm happy to host, though it would have to be on the weekend since I work late (all the time, grrr, but back on topic...). Unless I've screwed up my calendar, it appears that I will actually and finally be in town next weekend. What do you think? Saturday? Sunday? Maybe start late afternoon to get the margs flowing and the tortillas cookin?
jml
Butterbean...you make me want to eat my own arm...I used to get breakfast tacos con todos at this dive in Austin: eggs, salsa, potatoes, refried beans, bacon and cheese on a hot flour tortilla. Heart attack good for 1.49...

Next weekend would be awesome. Saturday gets my vote, but really only b/c its sooner. wink.gif

@ DrivinWest - NO! W. Alabama Ice House was torn down??? I spoke with Madilyn last week and she failed to mention it. A moment of silence for the best ice house in Houston...

@ Butterbean - We are still in negotiations for the dream location. We've decided if we can't have the place in Schwabing we want, we"ll settle for a tiny dive anywhere, once the word get's out that the food is REAL, good and cheap we can expand. It will take miracles to happen by September so, maybe in October??? In the interim, we"ll help Hazza & Jason get the kitchen rockin' at the Arc while we seek out the dream locale.

@ Interplanetjaet - YES! real tacos, real simple. what's up with this canned chilli they put in tacos at Saulsalito's?? I am a fan of the grilled shrimp taco with fresh cilantro (corriander) and onions in a corn tortilla from La Tapatia (YUM!)

@ mad - I was thinkin' The Iguana's & The Gypsie Kings, but it you want Doug Sahm, you got it! that is the whole point behind our guest being involved in the development. you pick the menu and the music.

ahem, no to brag folks but I hold first place for best margarita, martini & bloody mary from a bartending competition back in H-town. I"ve been gone for awhile, but I still remember how to make a stiff and yummy rita and NO! they will not cost your pension. Pitchers? okay! fine, you can have pitchers of margaritas!!!
Keydeck
You'd better get 3Linos involved then too with his award winning Chili.

@TexasTornado

I vote for the Gypsy Kings, even though they're French. wink.gif
ellewood
;-) yes, a lot of those recently. but i have to hike to the hauptbahnhof for the times and then pay a bloody fortune and not get all the supplements and there's never a decent black and white film on the telly and the video stores are closed on sunday. so, it all takes a bit more effort and kind of contradicts the doing-buggar-all thing.

Wait, are you talking about the one on the corner of West Alabama and Shepherd or the one a bit farther East on W Alabama? Both are/were "Icehouses," but only the one further East remains.
TexasTornado
@ DrvinWest - okay, I cried for nothing! the one at the corner of W.Alabama and Dunlavy is the on I was talking about. I have a flat right across the street and could not for the life of me figure out why my roommate failed to mention it??!?

@interplanetjanet - I thought the "G" Kings were from Spain? oh well, I"m Fench too and still make the best Tex Mex this side of the pond. and yes sister, the kings get 2 thumbs up and you will hear them out our place. The Iguana's are from New Orleans and that is spicy enough for me.

Is this thread making anybody hungry?
DrivinWest
OK, phew - sorry to startle your there. I lived just down the street at Dunlavy and Harold (2 streets before you hit Westheimer when driving North).
TexasTornado
Montrose 77006 77098 77019 I love the Montrose.

For those of you that find youselves lost, DW & I were walking down memory lane. The inner loop is by far the coolest part of a huge city.

Houston. Houston, Texas that is. Friendly people. Good food. Home of The West Alabama Ice House.

Cheat like the Mexicans. Get a tortilla press.
jml
Heya - should we split this thread? DIY Tex Mex and Margaritas? With a sign up sheet that says whose coming/bringing what?

@DR...no self respecting Mexicans I know will admit to having a press...mostly cause their mamas would whack em one upside the head wink.gif

..probably WITH a heavy tortilla press wink.gif

No self respecting Italian would ever admit to owning a ravioli press, but loads do. Cheats.

Having said that, I personally would use a tortilla press and a ravioli press, if only for consistency. Don't own either, so I cheat even more and just buy them in. Getting far too lazy in the kitchen I am... sad.gif
MommyinDE
if ya'll are planning on doing the DIY deal you gotta have somebody with a big kitchen, or a big flat. it would be possible for one person to cook it, and then the others to put their own fajitas or whatever you'll be making together in another room
TexasTornado
Bondi has a huge commerical kitchen they don't use anymore. perhaps we could have the party upstairs? We could bring our own food, prepare and clean up the kitchen afterwards. We would have to run this by Greg, but as I'll be there tonight I could grovel and beg.
jml
I think Butterbean offered to host in the post above?
