Thanks for the advice, but I can't afford the courses here, they're all so expensive. I'll just have to stick with my workbook then!
I do have plenty of opportunity to practice it with my partner's family, but I wanted to come so that I could learn by interacting with other people who understand German from an English perspective. Perhaps folk who don't speak German at the speed of formula one and who might be sympathetic with my sentences being all back to front. Having to go away and learn German first and then come back, well it sorts of defies the point of going for me. Thanks for being honest though!
Perhaps then, it shouldn't say in the title post that 'absolute beginners' are welcome?
I'm off to conjugate something

We've had ppl there that have only spent a few weeks in school and they always manage to feel they accomplised something at the end... Feel free to bring some beginners with you too.
The trick is NOT to wimp out and revert to English or it defeats the purpose. The post is pretty clear about that but evey now and again it happens that someone misunderstands this.
If you are happy to struggle a bit but stay in german then come on down and you'll be sure to find some patient conversations.

Thanks everyone, I'll stick my head in the workbook for a couple more weeks though and then I'll descend upon you. Ye gods save your mortal souls, it might be painful.
As for never reverting to English, well, I'd thought the threat in the first post was real! Perhaps I'll cheat by bringing flash cards

A quick reminder for the Stammtisch tomorrow night. Just because it's "school" holidays doesn't mean you shouldn't keep practising your German! Hope to see some old and new faces there

It's been a long while since the last Stammtisch - what with summer holidays, Oktoberfest etc. but now the autumn is here it's time to refresh your German and socialise at the same time so come along next. Thurs.
Please use the sign-up page so I have an idea of numbers!
Stammtisch will be held at Molly Malone's Irish Pub,
Kellerstr. 21
starting at 19.00.
Nearest
S-Bahn is
Rosenheimerplatz or
Tram 18 to
Gasteig and walk along street.

out of curiousity and ignorance on german stammtisch procedures, i have the following question: why do you have a german stammtisch in an irish bar? i would have sought a non-english speaking bar would be more better.
madgibson
Oct 4 2006, 4:52 pm
@planetmoni
we hold it at different places each time - some german, some english. Doesn't really make any difference as we stick to our rule of speaking german until ca. 22.00 then it's usually a free for all!

Don't forget to sign up for the Stammtisch next Thurs. It's a good way to try out your german and meet new people!

Kats will also be there plus friends who are no doubt also native speakers! Maybe Oli will come along too...so there are always a few native speakers around.

Ok folks - reservation is for 15-20 people at 19.00 under "Toytown". Please try and turn up punctually as it is not always possible to keep empty tables "free"! Perhaps the "maybes" can confirm during the couse of the day if they will become "definites" or "dropouts"?!

I'd come, my suggestion would be in
Haidhausen.
Le Florida. But it can't hold too many people, so it may not be ideal.

Oct 22 2006, 9:09 pm
I can suggest
Moccar on Steinstr its kind of cool, and has a happy hour, or Cafe Weinerpl at Rosenkavalierpl (U4- Arabellapark) has happy hour til 10 during the week, and is quite comfortable.
There is a new place that took over the old Indian Bar, at Sebastian pl, but I cannot remember the name, its also a good atomsphere to 'conversation'.
