that turned out to be a great gathering. but it was damn difficult to keep those tables reserved. at first the tables were taken, but gotten back, but by 8.15, i nearly told the waitress to take the lot. luckily I didn't, becaues people began showing up one after the other. all but 2 reserved places were taken up in the end. café puck is popular!
the weirdest thing was talking to a brit (erm pepper) in german! i understood you better mate than when we talk english. *heh heh*.
g'night.

Mar 31 2006, 10:13 am
Yep, good point. It's not problem if people are gonna come later but best to drop that into the comments.
Next gathering will be on the 20th April as easter will get in the way.
Any suggestions for a location??
Elfenstar
Mar 31 2006, 11:36 am
(i didn't find a listing of all previous locals, just previous attendees).
- Café Beethoven near Goethplatz? That's a popular cafe, nice too.
- Café Westend (Schwanthalerhöhe U-Bahn). They also have a pool table and a kegel alley. Did breakfast there once.
- Café Mozart (Pettenkoferstraße? Close to Sendlingertor -- off of West Sonnenstraße). Had a few drinks there.
Unfortunately am on vacation, but will do next time when I am in town.

I'll probably be there a bit before 7.30 myself. It's only a small place so you'll spot us easily - there's a raised area on the left as you go in - that's where I've reserved the table!

Just wondering... how do the 'absolute beginners' get on? Do they get ignored much?
Always wanted to go to this, but my German really is very basic. Very much like Manuel's English in Fawlty Towers. As much as I try, I always get the Germans looking at me, with their faces contorted, as though they're in pain.
Though the other day, a woman tried telling me that I was pronouncing 'sprechen' wrong (which I wasn't) and she proceeded to demonstrate how she thought it had to be said, as "spreshen". I think I need to memorise something horrid in German, for just such an occasion. Something like... "bugger off smelly"

There are normally all levels there, just come along and see how you get on. You will probably learn some new things, and generally its a nice relaxing evening with good people.
madgibson
May 17 2006, 7:43 am
@Sidthespid
Well, I wouldn't advise "absolute beginners" to come to the Stammtisch. Not that you'd be ignored but the point is to speak german with each other which is rather difficult if you're not in a position to converse even on a basic level. Have you done a german course?- why not try that first and then come along and try and improve your vocabulary. Or even better just talk to Germans - even if it's sometimes painful

Otherwise the temptation at the Stammtisch is to speak English and then it defeats the point of coming.
smartini
May 17 2006, 10:01 am
I agree !
I am an absolute beginner (actually just started my first German lessons this week) and attended the German-speaking stammtisch last week, but was not able to follow any conversations. Unfortunately I had to revert to English which was not fair to everyone else that was there to practice German.
As a result I have decided to work on my German and perhaps try to attend in a few months when I can actually converse a little ! It will then be a lot more fun and productive.
Just my opinion !

Hey, good luck with your German classes and hope to see you back at the Stammtisch showing off all your new phrases!!
