@Shaggy
thanks for organizing it - it was fun!
One of the few TT-events I've been to which wasn't only about gettin' drunk
Shaggy
Sep 17 2004, 7:57 am
Great night last time... lots of new faces. For the
next event lets go to Hazza's cellarbar where it's easier to mingle...
Thursday 30th September
7.15pm-9pm (cocktails are on special all night)
The Arc Pub (see map)
Schraudolphstrasse 24
D-80799 Munich Phone: 0178-3256423 or 0177-8404512
For new people who want to introduce themselves in English, I'll be there from 7pm...
Between 7.15pm-9pm we'll only use German. As we were well over 30 and numbers are growing, it's gonna get hard to find places big enough and social enough to hold these... suggestions? Thought about moving this to Friday nights, but think it would be even busier out there... feedback?

the Cocktail special sounds tempting - but with a group this size we might be able to get a Cocktail special pretty much anywhere, just remember the Camping trip and the night at the Pizza place.
Noise is sth to keep in mind too, it doesn't make it any easier if the place is too loud. Too bad it's getting too cold for picnics and beergardens.

Despite my best intentions I never made it to a German speaking night - and since I leave before the next one it's unlikely that I ever will now - what I would suggest though is a few of the places along Schellingstraße in the week - on a Friday forget it, but Brik on a Wednesday night can be very quiet indeed - it's also near a tram and 2 Ubahn lines.

Thanks for organising it Shaggy - had a great time last night, even though I had to leave fairly early.
I think the Arc is probably a fairly good bet for location - it can hold a lot of people, has mingling space, is pretty quiet and is TT home turf. I know a handful of other places, but most are only quiet because they're so far out of the way (eg Cargo). Once summer arrives again we can move to a beer garden, but until then (as you point out) it's going to be difficult to find places.
Friday nights? Friday'll be even busier, certainly - Thursdays are the new Friday, but at least they're not
too bad. Wednesday would clash with
curry night (plus quite a few of us have German class then) so numbers would be down for both events, which would be a shame. Tuesday would clash with the TT Tuesday drinks, and most people aren't up for a night out on Monday (plus it clashes with German again for a few of us). Weekends are almost certainly out, so personally I'd suggest sticking with Thursdays.

Good night last night...Met some new people...overall my German is getting better. I can't believe it...Thanks Shaggy for the organization. I would also like sticking to Thursday.
Thanks Shaggy. Had a nice time, met some new peoples. Don't care about the location as long as there's a decent menu. Would agree though that a more quiet and "mingle friendly" environment is in order.
Thursdays are good, though how about trying (just once) to combine it with TT Tuesday drinks. Never been to the Arc but assume it can hold different sets of groups. We're only speaking German from 7:15 til 9:00 and I assume the drinkers go on for much longer. No reason the groups couldn't join together? Just a thought, kill to birds with one stone and all that.
Shaggy
Sep 17 2004, 8:55 am
Thanks for all the feedback.
-Will keep to Thursdays
-Arc will be 1 x per month and I'll try and find somewhere quiet and close for the other.
-I always negotiate group cocktail prices if not on offer

-Good suggestion but not sure about mixing the TT Tuesday... already too many people and very hard to keep the discipline... normally though we time it so that non German speaking TTers can swing by at 9pm, just as we stop German...mixes well... (also Tuesday's I'm busy Jiving

)

hmm, just one thought even though i am not often out on a Tuesday.
There is the Touch Rugby on TTTuesday, Jive dancing and now the German Stammtisch? Who shal go the "normal" Tuesday meet up then?
I always loved the atmosphere when everybody came up to just mingle and not being part of a "group". And some don't have time on a Tuesday so for them it would be nice to have several nights to choose from...
Shaggy
Sep 17 2004, 9:12 am
@BL
Touch Rugby on Tuesdays is getting canned due to darkness...
Stammtisch is just a German language version (until 9pm) of TT Tuesday.. so another option for people to come out and play...

I really enjoyed last night too Shaggy.

Thanks for organising it...and I thought the venue was great...it was spacious and light, and I didn't find it too hard to mingle (other places have more tables to scoot around). It's also a good place for food...my vote would be for the same kind of place again. And this idea Deutsch 'til 9 means that others join us later too, which I like...

Nah, I think its a brilliant plan but probably too late to change? Anyway, technically you could make dinner at 6pm and then bop over to the Arc after 7pm. Peeps are supposed to get their talk on til 9 anyway...

Does the prohibition of English also include using it to explain something that you have said in German but the other person has not understood.
I've checked the manual. (Chapter 2 Paragraph 1) No as long as you have dutifully exhausted all other options including:
1. trying an alternate explanation in German - different ways to explain the same thing if you get my drift.
2. getting another person involved in the explanation process-lots of peeps are really good at helping me to clarify my pidgeon deutsch. the meaning gets across and I learn some new words, or better yet, how to say it properly the next time around.
3. miming - also must be in german, preferably with technomusik. automatic disqualification if
Hasselhoff gets involved. note: not sure of the legality of this rule as have never myself seen a german mime, I for one, question their existence. I do suspect certain TTers are closeted breakdancing miming fools...so perhaps help is available.

Next one to be held on October 14th... place tbd.
any locational suggestions welcome... big enough to hold 20-40...quiet'ish and central..
I wont make it this time but if I was, I'd vote for the ARC again -- assuming Hazza's not got a big game on.
Anyway, I thought the ARC was a good choice, mingle and semi normal-talking voice friendly. Also that burger Canuck was carrying around looked tasty...to bad I already stuffed myself at the Bondi.
