About "The Vagina Monologues":

The Vagina Monologues is an Obie Award-winning episodic play written by Eve Ensler which premiered at the off-Broadway Westside Theatre in 1996. Ensler originally starred in the production, playing all the various women who share their views about their vaginas with the audience; when she left the play it was recast with three celebrity monologists. The production has been staged internationally, and a television version featuring Ensler was produced by cable TV channel HBO.

About "V-Day":

The Vagina Monologues are the cornerstone of the V-Day movement, whose participants stage benefit performances of the show worldwide. The "V" in V-Day stands for Valentine, Vagina, and Victory, linking love and respect for women to ending violence against women and girls. The proceeds from these performances go to programs that assist victims of domestic violence.

V-Day has raised (and donated) over $30 million dollars and exists in 81 different countries. The organization has worked directly with women in regions like Cairo, Kenya and the Pine Ridge Reservation to build safe houses and support political resistance.

I remember you posting a "casting call" for this on TT a couple of months ago, Erin.

So who ended up getting selected? Anyone we know?

As I understand it, The Vagina Monologues usually have a cast of just three, right?
Carm
I do know that one TTerin is in the cast, and I do look forward to seeing her in the play.

I am planning on attending the friday night, anybody else want to come with me?
eurobabs
Carm,

I would love to join you on Friday. Have been wanting to see this, plus would be a bonus to get to catch up with you - has been a while. smile.gif

Let me know if you can organize tickets or if I should get my own.
Purple Muffin
I saw this a couple of years ago in Frankfurt. It is a shame it is not on on the weekend I am in Munich as I would love to see it again. wink.gif

Which TTerin?

I saw this in Buenos Aires and found it very amusing!

Agree with PM - shame I am not in Munich!

Lame lame lame! Sexist, horrible prose that's you'd expect from a 12-year-old (or my weird cousin in California) trying to write beat poetry which, among other things, glorifies the rape of a child (The Little Coochie Snorcher That Could). As if the book wasn't bad enough, I had the displeasure of seeing a live production. those reading the selected pieces do so in the style of "motivated high school play". Not even my book of "Selected Dyke Poetry and Writings" with its extreme anti-male bent (including one piece which seriously calls for the culling of all male children) is as bad as VagMon.

woof.
Carm
Eurobabs- I will make contact and get us good tickets. wink.gif

UA- I will not put her name out til she okays it. Just come along and see for yourself.

I enjoyed it in the US. It's all about delivery. And maybe having the right part. wink.gif

Pro-sex feminist Betty Dodson, author of several books about female sexuality, saw the play as having a negative and restrictive view of sexuality and an anti-male bias. She called the play a blast of hatred at men and heterosexuality. Individualist feminist Wendy McElroy shared many of Dodson's views.

Contentious elements of the play include:

* the amount of attention given to brutal sexual encounters compared with consensual or harmonious sexual encounters;
* negative portrayal of male-female sexual relationships;
* In "The Little Coochie Snorcher that Could", a lesbian encounter between a very young woman (13 originally, 16 in revised versions) and a mature woman uses the line: "If it was rape, it was good rape." This section has been excised from recent performances. Warnings have been issued by the copyright holder that using the line "It was good rape" could lead to legal action. The scene also mentions the older woman giving alcohol to the underaged girl. Many have criticized this for portraying statutory rape by a lesbian in a positive light.

I'll answer for Erin, I don't think she will mind. This production is cast with each of the monologues being performed by a different woman. I believe there are 12 women total in the production, with many others working on the project in other capacities.

Hi ladies. How great that you are all chatting about the play! And yes, I am one of the many women performing in the play. And yes again, (was that you Lora who answered) the Munich version of the play will be with a larger cast than usual - the more the merrier I say :-)

And important note - the producers are in serious need of volunteers for the performances (t-shirt sales, program distribution, set up, etc etc) so if you have some time to donate to the cause, we would love to have you. Please contact Tamsen at ... tamsen_p@yahoo.com. Peace!!
Carm
if I get one moreperson to sign up with us, then we are a group of 10 and can get the 12.50 tickets. Anybody interested?

Did anyone manage to do this.

nope, I am not student, and couldn't get 10 to sign up, so I got 9 tickets at the 15 Euro price. Maybe you need to do it in person for the student discount.

College administrators have been enthusiastic supporters Eve Ensler’s play The Vagina Monologues and schools across the nation celebrate “V-Day (short for Vagina Day) every year. But when the College Republicans at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island rained on the celebrations of V-Day by inaugurating Penis Day and staging a satire called The Penis Monologues, the official reaction was horror. Two participating students, Monique Stuart and Andy Mainiero, have just received sharp letters of reprimand and have been placed on probation by the Office of Judicial Affairs. The costume of the P-Day “mascot — a friendly looking “penis named Testaclese, has been confiscated and is under lock and key in the office of the assistant dean of student affairs, John King.

This is just too funny. laugh.gif
